Goddard should be sold off now
I'm struggling to think of man in this world that has been offered millions of dollars and knocked it back.
He is gone and we should sell him off now and start developing the next wave.
Goddard is going to be a real distraction this year.
Let's be like Lyon and be progressive about this and make the first move.

Put him at chf and make him the captain. Rooey's had a pretty good run at it and could do with a bit less pressure.Cairnsman wrote:I'm struggling to think of man in this world that has been offered millions of dollars and knocked it back.

Rooey was offered plenty by the Suns, and knocked it back.Cairnsman wrote:...I'm struggling to think of man in this world that has been offered millions of dollars and knocked it back...
Couldn't sell him off now if we wanted to. And he's a free agent as of 2012. Only chance is to sign him to a new contract and then trade him in the 2012 trade period. Or let him walk, which we otherwise have no power over if it's GWS (could match offers from others but unlikely with our cap). Correct me if I'm wrong.

He can simply do a Gary Ablett jnr from until the end of the 2012 season then announce he is going to GWS.
The only way to stop players walking for nothing is to require them to extend their contracts BEFORE trade week while they still have at least one more year on their contract
If they refuse to sign an extension, they are traded during trade week.
No ifs, no buts, no excuses, sign or be TRADED.
Traded to the club of St Kilda's choosing otherwise they have to stand out of football for 2 years.
No mercy shown.
That is how it works in European soccer.
Players are worth millions in cash to these soccer clubs.
Let a player run down his contract and he can walk for free.
Coaches and list managers have to be up to the task of making decisons on who is a required player a little earlier.
For instance they would have to decide who they require in 2014 before the end of the 2012 season.
If they can't do that then the coaches and list managers should be made to walk .... walk the plank.
We doin't need coaches and list managers who procrastinate until the end of the season before deciding who they require for the next season.
We need coaches and list managers who are competent enough to do the player assessments one year earlier and be accountable for their decisons.
Decisons have to be made on the available information at the right time not when it is convenient because all information is available.
That is how it works in the real world, that is how it should work at our club.
The more you know, the more you know you don't know.

I have a bad feeling about this.
I really hope he stays and they are able to sign him up early in the year.
He will be asked about it everytime he is interviewed. And if he starts giving the " leave it till the end of the season" type answers ala Scully and Ablett, then we'll know he's definately going

Riewoldt becomes eligible for veteran status for 2013 season.
If you have one or two declared veterans half of each declared veteran's pay is exempt from the salary cap.
If you have 3 declared veterans one third of each declared veteran's pay is exempt from the salary cap.
If you have 4 declared veterans one quarter of each declared veteran pay is exempt from the salary cap. ETC
Once declared a veteran always a declared veteran unless you are delisted and redrafted.
If you have salary cap problems, then it is stupid to have more than two of your eligible for veteran players declared as veterans.
Better to have one half of the two most highly paid eligible for veterans players exempted from the salary cap than one third of your three most highly paid.
Koschitzke will be declared a veteran for 2012 hence the lower paid Blake already declared a veteran for 2011 having to go through the draft.
But in 2013 Koschitzke can be similarly dumped and go through the draft.
Then Riewoldt can join Hayes as the two declared veterans.
A new contract on basic pay for Koschitzke and half of Riewoldt's pay exempt leaves around half a million under the salary cap.
GWS is after a number of out of contract players and not prepared to pay Ablett like salaries to get one publiicity player.
They wont be paying over a million.
St Kilda may be able to come close to GWS's offer.
Hence WRONG.

I thought that the rules change for veterans from 2013. My understanding is that from 2013 clubs can have as many veterans as they like. The only difference being that instead of 1/2 of their salary being inside the Salary Cap it becomes a flat rate of $100,000 being outside the Salary Cap for each and every Veteran on the list !!

What about the article in the paper today, quoting SOS, saying that GWS have their opening right now, to sign up those who are out of contract at the end of next season? In that article, Goddard is the second one mentioned as being highly sought after by them. They can sign him up right now for 2013, if they haven't already:

That article is in the paper because we are in the middle of the "Secret Window" for GWS to sign uncontracted players. The "Secret Window" is from 16 November (List Lodgement 2) until 24 November (National Draft)AnythingsPossibleSaints wrote:What about the article in the paper today, quoting SOS, saying that GWS have their opening right now, to sign up those who are out of contract at the end of next season? Lets NOT kid ourselves, Pendelbury will be their 1st target, closely followed by Goddard. With the ammount of money these two can command in these inflated times GWS will probably only be able to choose one of them. Lets hope its Pendelbury !!

Ouch! that would really hurt, I was counting on at least a $450,000 discount on Riewoldt.Eastern wrote:I thought that the rules change for veterans from 2013. I guess Demetriou antipated St Kilda's strategy and changed the rules to screw us once again.

In 2013 we will have Hayes, Koschitzke, Riewoldt & Milne eligable for the veterans list. A saving of $400,000 so it isn't all bad !!ace wrote:Ouch! that would really hurt, I was counting on at least a $450,000 discount on Riewoldt.Eastern wrote:I thought that the rules change for veterans from 2013.
