Being a Saint saves Robbie - Article.

A DECORATED football career has helped keep former AFL hard man Robbie 'Mad Dog' Muir out of jail.
He escaped jail yesterday despite facing court for a fifth drink-driving charge.

Muir - who earned his nickname because of his on-field temper during his time with St Kilda in the 1970s and '80s - pleaded guilty to the three-year-old drink-drive charge at Ringwood Magistrates' Court.

Magistrate Nunzio La Rosa said Muir faced up to 12 months in jail, but gave credit to him for his community work and for the "joy you gave the community as an AFL player".

Yeah, I don't care who he played for, I have no sympathy for someone who consistently places the lives of others at risk. I would've had no problem in slotting him. Five times is disgraceful.

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

He has never been a saint, and the way he's going I wish he'd never been a Saint. Glad I don't live in Ballarat.

0.01 above the limit is hardly a diabolical offence.

Mad-dog was a great player for StKilda.
Good as he was he could have been a superstar if he had managed himself better.

But against that there is no doubt other clubs targeted him with racist taunts and his notoriously short fuse.
In today's cleaned up game we would have seen much more of the best of him.

I know he has had a history of drink related offences.

But he does a lot of good work for his community.
Hopefully he can beat his demons.

I wish him all the best.

typical article on someone who uses any excuse they can to get a lesser sentence . Robbie was a decent player who had to put up with a lot of vilification during his career , both racial and personal .
However , I and probably most on this website have seen him at the footy drunk or tipsy on many occassion . What i'd like to see is robbie get some proper help and kick his alcoholism , this would be a greater inspiration to his communtity than his footy career .

A .235 previous level says he should be dead.

I loved watching him play, but I wouldn't want to have run into him on a dark night in Ballarat back in the day.

That's probably because of the court ordered community work.

Actually, giving a lesser sentence because someone played league footy should have been enough to land the magistrate in some seriously hot water. That it hasn't is only evidence of a criminal justice system that has lost the plot.

Having spent a night on the booze with Robbie about thirteen years ago with his family after watching an interstate game at Moorabbin in the Social Club, I think it is tragic that he's still drinking. In a way the fact that he is still energetic enough to get around the great state of Victoria is testament to his fortitude and constitution.
I really hope that he gets the help he so badly needs. I found him to be a really good guy and thoroughly enjoyed the night. It was a huuuge night the little I remember of it.

Not sure WHEN his priors were, they only mention a jail term in 2003 that he successfully appealed (the jail term I'd say) and that the priors date back to 1993, but I would have thought there would be a fair chance he should have been on 0.00 with that many priors.

I remember watching Robbie Muir in manny games. At the time I don't think I was old enough to apreciate his brilliance, but just imagine if he was playing alongside Roo right now. All the physical maulings roo cops might not happen.

I also remember referring to him as mad dog like a lot of pl did, and even though I knew not what I said, I find that name offensive now.

I hope it works out well for him.

Yeah that's quite odd given it's a summary offence, rare to find a drink driving offence taking so long, as obviously process would have been issued in the first twelve months.

Having said that, in the 26 years I've been involved in the system, the wheels generally seem to go slower now than way back then.

It's still breaking the Law! If he hit someone with his car would you be saying the same thing?

I too wish him all the best and Pray that he can find a way to overcome any problems!

Great footballer.
Dud of a bloke for drink driving offences.
Magistrate a dud for mentioning service as footballer. Would a paedophile get a lower sentence for playing AFL...fair dinkum...if you do the crime expect punishment...and in Mad Dog's case with priors he got lucky...hope he doesn't kill anyone on the roads in the future...the world we live in is upside down in so many ways.

A brilliant player. He needed more support and maybe still does. If memory serves me right I think he only played 8 games (all of which we won) in 1978 and we only won 8 games for the season. (I'm willing to be corrected though).

A couple of years later I was watching a game at Windy Hill where we were getting our usual thumping in the early 80's. Robbie, who had played in the reserves that day was watching the senior game standing outside the reserves change rooms with a few other players about 3 rows back from where I was seated. (Coming back from a long injury /suspension more likely).

As we were seated in an Essendon members enclosure, an unsuspecting Bomber fan two rows in front of me screamed abuse at a Saints player along the lines of: "You're all a pack of mongrels St Kilda; just like that __nt MUIR". I glanced over my shoulder and saw Robbie commencing to climb over the seats to get to the unsuspecting Bomber supporter. I then looked forward to the errant Bomber supporter who had turned white once he realized who was climbing the seats to get to him.

Luckily there were several Saints reserves players there to control the situation and were able to hold him. I think I made eye contact with Robbie & put my hand up for him to stop & maybe he took notice as I was wearing a Saints scarf. Maybe not. (I'd like to think I helped anyway) After he was scarpered away into the Reserves change rooms the boys in Blue appeared but everything was under control by then.

A player with sublime gifts with an uncontrollable temper.

I once spent a year in Adelaide, I think it was on a Sunday.

Quite sure John Nicholls and others did a bit more than drink driving in the past!
