A dud spending a third year on an AFL list ..... seems contradictory

Not sure what to think of Cahill, Johnson, Heyne then as he was preferred to them.....and he had NO contract, so he was renewed

getting promoted from the rookie list is a good effort by Archer....he has a big body....good power and has a real dip....
and his improvement curve from 2009 has been good

obviously some people (with actual knowledge) rate him

People keep going on about big guys taking time to develop however don't seem to apply this to Archer.

That theory doesn't just apply to guys over 200cms. Archer is a big kid and obviously is perceived to be some chance of eventually making the grade.

And unlike other talls who have been let go, Daniel actually has a bit of meat on his bones.

he only turned 20 last week and has a fair bit of development to do. I think he actually has pretty good hand and foot skills for a big bloke. he isn't going to be big enough to play like plugger in the goal square so is going to have to burn off his baby fat - could probably loose 5kg and turn another 5 kg of puppy fat into muscle. Then needs to work on his running- burst speed and endurance - incentive of a possible 250k+ a year - you would think might spur him on - will need to show something in 2012 you would think

The Saints Academy will help guys like Archer and Winmar and not just the kids we got last year and the ones we'll pick up in a bit over 3 weeks time

He has a go. That puts him in front of some others I would think. With just one game behind him they need to find his true position.

He came to us pretty unfit and last year was still 5kg overweight. Hits the packs harder than anyone on our list and runs at the ball in a straight line. In the game he played against Richmond last year he splattered about three Richmond players in a marking attempt, in a situation where you would not expect the players to get splattered. He actually has physical presence, which is lacking at our club.

Give him a really solid pre-season and see what he can give us then, and then don't be surprised if Kosi has to step aside for him.

I'm one who thinks that he may give us something.

No problems about him as a person - I'm sure he's a great bloke.

My issue stems from the fact that he can't play football, which bothers me as I feel we should be trying to recruit and retain those capable of playing AFL football.

Hated as a player Im guessing.....as only a lucky few on here are friends with players...

Im sure the kid can play a bit......better judges than us seem to think so...

Id take
being on an AFL list, performing strongly in the VFL, impressing in the NAB Cup and getting and AFL senior game...

if I did those things....I would say with complete confidence
I am not a hopeless footballer

I like him, I think it was v Richmond last year? Had a go, willing to make a contest. Certainly WAY early to call if he will make it or not surely?

just to clarify (not that he needs it) obviously I'm referring to him as a player... quite a few posts about ppl wanting him cut for footy reasons

don't know anything about his character at all... certainly haven't heard anything unpleasant

what kind of role do people see him playing?

Big, strong body with a serious presence at contests
Gives 100% for the entire game, has surprising endurance despite his slightly jolly appearance
Team player; sacrificed his year if kicking goals to fill in as ruck and FB and Sandy
Quite good overhead, at the very least brings the ball to ground
Positions himself well around te ground and attacks the contest with confidence

Weaknesses:
Not quite athletic enough to be a true modern CHF and not tall enough to be a ruckman
Kicking isn't fantastic (but not terrible)
Not great at ground level
Conditioning could improve
Lacks an obvious best position; jack of all trades, master of none

I believe with some decent coaching and development he could at least become a Leigh Brown-like role player, who kicks a few goals, takes a tall defender and provides an option in the ruck or down back if needed.
Agree with much of that but I feel it unlikely that he would be played in the ruck in the AFL. He competes manfully but can't jump far and is only 193 cm so he doesn't have more reach than all but the most token of opponents.

Archer was forced to play roles that he would not have expected this year.

The Saints were rash to delist Adam Pattison last year after King retired and McGrath was delisted. Yeah, I know that the club was "unlucky" that Steven Gaertner retired unexpectedly, but a lack of forward planning left the club vulnerable. Gardiner may never have been able to return to the playing field with his knee and Kosi had ankle problems. Both were unfit to play when the season began.

Sandringham had problems of their own during the season and there were times when the ruck load was carried by Archer and Stanley. His first match for the Saints was up forward and he was relegated to learn more about what it takes to be a key forward, then he was required in the ruck, and finally the club tried to fast track Tommy Walsh by playing him in the ruck swapping as key forward. This meant Arch was sent to full back. He showed a good deal of versatility earning a place in the best players in 3 of his 15 VFL matches.

This is not an ideal way to prepare a player for AFL.
He may benefit enormously from the club's new academy - to help define roles for him and develop the skills he needs to excel in those roles.
Spot on.

In addition I thought his last few games were his best. He was very strong at the contest particularly against Collingwood at Vic Park when the game was in the balance. He was also more durable through the season than the big men delisted. He deserves a chance to go around again.

Early last season we had serious doubts about McEvoy. He improved immensely with more game time. Perhaps Archer will develop with the right coaching and sufficient game time.

Remember, our player development had been appalling under money-bags. It can only improve from here and Archer could be a beneficiary.
