Why does everyone hate Archer so much?

Well I like him and I'm happy he's still with us.

Hopefully with the Saints Academy and the new Sandy set up, DA can be given a chance to develop properly rather than being relegated to a spare parts player for the Zebs, as he was this year.

i love the way the big boy played in the NAB, hard bodied, made it to contests and crashed packs. He looked like Rooey after too many cheese burgers.
The down side- He isn't quite a ruck and didn't pluck all his marks. He had an average year at Sandy by some reports as well.

who knows how any of our players will be playing, with the acadmeny up and running. it might be the making of many players now.

In his first game he failed to kick a goal.



That should have ensured a game the following week

I'm a big fan - I really think the guy has a future ! It is just a few who have judged him on 1 game which is really unfare. IMO he has the tools to make a really good KPP lets hope he does!

Doesn't he have good 20M pace also, give him a bit of time, I think he'll make it.

The coaches at Sandy had their doubts about whether Archer could make it in the AFL. On the face of it, he looks lucky to have stayed on the list, but good luck to him moving forward. hope he can prove them wrong.

He's a dud, but you can only cut so many duds in one year. He struggled to keep his place in the Sandy seniors.

Strengths:
Big, strong body with a serious presence at contests
Gives 100% for the entire game, has surprising endurance despite his slightly jolly appearance
Team player; sacrificed his year if kicking goals to fill in as ruck and FB and Sandy
Quite good overhead, at the very least brings the ball to ground
Positions himself well around te ground and attacks the contest with confidence

Weaknesses:
Not quite athletic enough to be a true modern CHF and not tall enough to be a ruckman
Kicking isn't fantastic (but not terrible)
Not great at ground level
Conditioning could improve
Lacks an obvious best position; jack of all trades, master of none

I believe with some decent coaching and development he could at least become a Leigh Brown-like role player, who kicks a few goals, takes a tall defender and provides an option in the ruck or down back if needed.

Agree with much of that but I feel it unlikely that he would be played in the ruck in the AFL. He competes manfully but can't jump far and is only 193 cm so he doesn't have more reach than all but the most token of opponents.

Archer was forced to play roles that he would not have expected this year.

The Saints were rash to delist Adam Pattison last year after King retired and McGrath was delisted. Yeah, I know that the club was "unlucky" that Steven Gaertner retired unexpectedly, but a lack of forward planning left the club vulnerable. Gardiner may never have been able to return to the playing field with his knee and Kosi had ankle problems. Both were unfit to play when the season began.

Sandringham had problems of their own during the season and there were times when the ruck load was carried by Archer and Stanley. His first match for the Saints was up forward and he was relegated to learn more about what it takes to be a key forward, then he was required in the ruck, and finally the club tried to fast track Tommy Walsh by playing him in the ruck swapping as key forward. This meant Arch was sent to full back. He showed a good deal of versatility earning a place in the best players in 3 of his 15 VFL matches.

This is not an ideal way to prepare a player for AFL.
He may benefit enormously from the club's new academy - to help define roles for him and develop the skills he needs to excel in those roles.
