2011 Draft Selections

Looking to our list needs we need replacements for –
Hayes = A midfielder who is a clearance specialist
Reiwoldt = CHF or FF who can kick clutch goals
Gardiner = Ruckman preferably mobile
Kosi = Full Forward

The rest can be best available but we need midfield and goal kicking depth – my priorities are sound skills, accurate goal kicking and clearance specialists (ruckman & mids) then KPP forwards and a Full Back.


Selections # 25 = Best available

Myles Bolger (South Frem / 201 / 90 / 93)
Ruckman
He is a terrific type and whilst we didn’t get to see much of him this year he certainly finished the season really well for South Fremantle. He is clever at the clearances with hit outs to advantage and is able to compete around the ground and potentially push fwd. Bolger ticks all those boxes albeit probably doesn’t push fwd as much as he could and that might be the worry. Still he is very athletic and has strong hands and good skills so no reason that couldn’t come in time.
Note: Bolger will be the best available ruckman at #25 and doubt he would get thru to 2nd round.
AFL Comparison – Matt Luenberger

Fraser McInness (Perth / 197 / 90 / 93)
Tall Forward
McInness who can play fwd and back. He is terrific mover and a big boy. That will really appeal to clubs and would think he will definitely go in the top 30. Also a pretty efficient user of the ball.
Note: McInness is the best available KPP at #25

Sam Kerridge (Bendigo Pioneers/ 188 / 84 / 93)
Midfielder:
Really powerful midfielder. Racks up big numbers in the midfield and this kid is a serious jet. Has an immense burst of speed and was very unlucky not to get games for Vic Country. Has that trademark Judd type explosive speed. Always looks dangerous when he gets near it and gets big clearance numbers. Strong mark overhead. Really great size and can get amongst the goals. Has been very consistent throughout the year.
Note: May have slid thru to # 35 but he is exactly our best fit midfielder @ # 25.

Shane Nelson (West Perth / 179 / 73/ 93)
Midfielder
Huge accumulator of the footy and he averaged a couple of goals per game at Colts level. At champs he had a terrific carnival and then surprised me even more by having an excellent Combine. He has that mix of endurance, speed and efficiency of disposal that makes him a real candidate for selection. I think he will start out a bit like Gaff has with the Eagles. Used more outside and then gradually coming into the stoppages over time.
Note: There may be a midfield slider from the top #20 ahead of Nelson but good value at #35.

Julian Dobosz (North Hobart / 193cm / 93)
Full Forward
"Very smart player inside 50 averaging 3.8 goals in 4 matches in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. Reads the ball well in flight, positions himself cleverly in the marking contest, has sure hands and an accurate shot for goal."
Note: Could be a bargain at # 35 almost ready to play.

Ruckman
"Represented Australia in the World Under-17 Basketball Championships in Germany 2010 before playing football for St Patricks College Ballarat this year, then joining the Rebels at the end of the season for two matches, averaging 13 disposals, showing outstanding natural talent."
Note: Best available ruckmen if we miss out on Bolger .

Andrew Boseley (Geelong Falcons 194 / 90 / 92)
Tall Backman
Over age player who I might have a bit high at this selection but he possesses an attribute that I think is much required in key defenders….closing speed…..and he is also a player who the Saints are looking to replenish I would think. Did some super jobs through the year and will surely have caught the eye of clubs looking to building their defence. He probably doesn’t get enough of the ball offensively for me but he did seem to improve that late. What you get with this kid is just someone who could go with the best fwds and whose pace and reach will make him really formidable.

Sebastian Ross (North Ballarat Rebels 187 / 82 / 93)
Midfielder
"Represented Vic Country at the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships, averaging 14.5 possessions and four tackles a game. His strengths are his work rate, contested footy, preparation and leadership. He is the cousin of Jobe Watson."

Josh Waldhuter (Central Districts 184 / 83 / 93)
Medium HBB/Midfielder
Matured body player who isn't afraid to put his body on the line. His attack on the ball is huge and the repeat efforts is what clubs will be after. Along with that his speed is above average and skills are great - very penetrating kick. Will be a very good pick at for whoever takes him but needs to work on his tank, he can fade out in games and doesn't rack up massive numbers.
Note: Midfield size but perhaps more off a HBF type – just love his attack on ball/player.

Shane Kersten (South Fremantle / 191 / 90 / 93)
Tall Forward
He is a very smart fwd type player and whilst I think it will take time for him to develop he has such a strong body and such good body position work that I think he can overcome that. Is reasonably mobile but its his smartness as a fwd and his marking ability that are his standouts. Terrific kick but can be a bit wayward. Action is fine so not sure what the issue is. Didn’t play champs as got injured just beforehand but came back to dominate the back end of the season.

Murray Newman (Swan Districts / 179 / 67 / 93)
Small Forward/Midfielder
He is a ripper and whilst he spent most of the year in the Swan District seniors he is probably 2 years off having an AFL body he will be well worth the wait. Very classy mover who can middle and fwd albeit think he will be a small fwd in his earlier years. Just never seems to lose his feet and uses it well either side and is almost cat like in his ability to move across the field. Played most of the year in the WAFL senior side after kicking 6 in his first and only Colts game. Didn’t put a foot wrong in the seniors and his last game was very good.
Note: Great tackler and applies forward pressure.

Haiden Schlothe (South Fremantle 179 / 72 / 93)
Midfielder/Small forward
Profile: Really good user of the footy. Looks dangerous whenever he gets near it. Good reader of the play. Has that radar where he just knows exactly where the goals are. Looks incredibly draftable. Has really impressed me and stood out in the couple of games I’ve seen of him. Can play up the field but just love what I’ve seen of him as a forward!

Selection # 60 = Best available (fill holes)

Kyal Horsley (Subiaco WAFL)
Midfielder:
Coach Watters and this bloke have some pretty good history together and Horsley’s form has been outstanding this year. 24 yo and tough midfielder type who is good inside and out and would be a handy addition to their midfield – particularly given Watters has suggested there is no reason for a rebuild. Really improved his endurance over previous years and getting better all the time.
Note: 2nd in Subi B&F fills the age gap we have.

Clay Smith (Gippsland Power / 180 / 82 / 93)
Midfielder
Suspect his mother worries about his ferocious attack on the footy! Debated where to drop this kid in and frankly this feels a little late. When thinking of this kid just think Joel Selwood and Luke Ball. Very team orientated player who is perfect for the modern game in that he will play a role as contested ball winner who tackles really well. He is a huge contested possession winner and just throws himself into everthing. Keeps his feet very well and is really adept at using his hands in close to advantage. Has nice foot skills as well.
Note: Is an exceptional extractor who puts his team mates in great positions.

Fletcher Roberts (Sandringham Dragons / 196 / 84 / 93)
Key Forward
Draft Combine invitee who had been solid all year but shone to prominence with his game changing effort in the GF where he kicked 5 goals on both Curran and Tomlinson from memory. Thing that stands out for me is that he uses his body really well and his contested marking is really first class. Whereas as a guy like Chris Dawes really struggles over head this guy’s contested marking is terrific and one out should be a hard matchup. Nice kick for a big kid as well. Will also provide an option in the ruck but will need to fill out a bit more.

Nathan Blee – (East Perth 192 / 90 / 90)
Key defender.
Had a great season for East Perth and was one of only 4 mature age players invited to the National combine. Will get picked by somebody in one of the drafts and will be able to perform immediately at AFL level. Has good pace and relies on ‘smarts’ to spoil forwards. Reads the play and positions himself very well.
Note: Another 22-23 year old ready to go player.
AFL Comparison – Craig Bolton

Elliot Yeo – (East Fremantle 188 / 79 / 93)
Midfieler/wingmen
Topped the agility testing and the stand jump testing at the combine so is quite gifted athletically. Has good speed and has performed strongly at Colts level in WA. Will probably start his career on the wing. The saints showed a tendency to bring in more athletic types in tradeweek and this will continue in the drafts.
Note: Elite athlete to fill our lack of leg speed.

Haydn Hector (Gippsland Power 181 / 81 / 93)
Midfielder/run with/small backman
Was very surprised GWS didn't pick him up considering they asked him to attend the combine last year. Inside/outside midfielder with elite endurance and can play run with roles to good effect. His attack on the ball is great, good reader of the play, Great courage and is a super mark for his height. His kicking can be great but can also let him down at times.
Note: Matched brad Hill beep test results over 16.

Looked like Coleman was going to choose cricket at one stage as he played for Australia in the U19 World Cup last year, but he has since been invited to the Draft Combine. Big forward and part time ruckman, he is strong overhead and has kicked a heap of goals this year. Could find himself in second round contention.
Note: 4th in TAC goal kicking after playing all over – versatile.

Nick Haynes (Dandenong Stingrays / 191 / 76 / 92)
Half forward/Wing
Skinny 19yo who is relatively new to footy and is a nice type. He plays wing / HF and would be a hard matchup given his height and ability to take a contested mark. Also pretty quick and agile and runs hard to create pressure and cause turnovers but the thing that always stands out for me when I see him is that is he one touch. Had a super year for the Rays and might be a bit of a Tom Lynch story. Has a terrific engine and is very quick so can see him being a really influential player for them if he can fill out that body. Other than that he is good’en.

Not sure exactly where Nick Murphy goes because without knowing which screening he went to I would have thought he was pretty high (ie I expected him at DC). Very mobile key position player who was well performed last year and who kicked a bag of goals this year including 5 in the GF. Very mobile forward who probably relies more on this than his ability to take contested marks. Is a beautiful kick and with his basketball background there is a lot to work with. Would probably like to see a touch more aggression in his game.

Alex Woodward (Sandringham Dragons / 179 / 79 / 93)
Midfielder
He is a player whose leadership and onfield commitment should really appeal. Some of his 1% efforts are incredible and he along with Frost were significant in turning the Dragons fortunes around in the 2nd half of the TAC GF. Wonderful inside player who is quick out of the contest and seems to make really good decisions when executing from a stoppage. For me that is his stand out attribute along with the competitiveness he brings to a game. Elite stoppage player.

Performances throughout the year have been very good. Has good vision but kicking can at times let him down at times, really needs to work hard on it.

Once you get outside the top 30 players it is really just a hope that they will add quality. Sam fisher was a gem taken late amongst the trash as was Simon Black. Neither were considered that great but are superstars now, we just need some luck and one of our picks could be a steal in hindsight. The law of averages says we are due.

Its amazing how some people would rather take the negative and critical route rather than seeing it for it is - a bit if fun and a CHANCE for the SAINTS to improve their list.

I have a lot more confidence with Pelchen, Elshaugh and Watters making the decisions than who we had in the past.

I agree. Elshaugh has had 2 picks already, Saad & Milera, & they both seem to be a new direction, i.e. fast, skilled, ready to play.

What Snoop has written on BF is impressive in size, but some of the player comparisons and reviews are a fair way off the mark and are very misleading.
