We better get a crack at Gold Coast at home... this draw looks like it is going to suck incredibly for us.
I bet six or seven interstate is on the cards here.
Starting against Port is s***.... if it was in Melbourne, great but we've only won three games against them at AAMI so I have no confidence - also, I can't see why they won't improve like West Coast this year.
GWS in second last round, meaning we only get one crack at them (also based on that article, we only get one crack at Port. Which s*** teams will we play twice? Any? none? FFS )
Yeah, my "draw" isn't looking too bad now is it?

I would think if we get GWS away in Round 21, we would get GC at home much earlier in the season.
I don't like Sunday Twilight, but at least I can get to the game, as opposed to Saturday afternoon (and to a lesser extent Saturday twilight).
Round 1 overall looks like this:
Sat 24/3 - GWS v Syd - ANZ (N)
Thu 29/3 - Rich v Carl - MCG (N)
Fri 30/3 - Coll v Haw - MCG (N)
Sat 31/3 - Melb v Bris - MCG
NM v Ess - ES (N)
Frem v Geel - PS (N)
Sun 1/4 - GC v Adel - GCS
WB v WCE - ES
PA v StK - AAMI (T)
I'm looking forward to making the trip and seeing the boys win.

Is it nice to travel interstate in round 1? No. Do have a good history in that stadium? No. Did we absolutely thrash PA, in Adelaide, last year? Yes, we did.
On GWS, yes, we get the "last crack" at them, but they'll also be dead on their feet. Gold Coast, as a side, was exhausted at the end of this year. GWS just can't condition 18/19 y/olds for a long season in such a short amount of time. No reason to whinge about a should-get 4 points that late in the year.

I'm not complaining too much, I'll be in London on that first weekend, which will mean the Saints game will be on at 7.40am.....
Which gives me 6 months to find somewhere to watch, cause I'm sure the Poms will be showing the Port vs Saints blockbuster everywhere!!! I'm thinking big screens set up in Trafalgar Square???

yes you are spot on, but for some reason we always have troubles vs port. last year and 08 or 09 i believe we killed them but every other time we have played like a totally different team and it sh1ts me up the wall.saint66au wrote:This thread is living proof that people care far too much about when we play and not enough about who
Surely a Round 1 agasint one of last years easybeats is something to be pleased about?
Plus, 4.40pm game in Adelaide....the last flight that leaves Adelaide to Melbourne on a weekend is usually a bit after 7pm....i am not staying in that city over night!
"Another storied win in Robert Harvey's career. They say he is the embodiment of their motto of strength through loyalty, and on the day he became just the tenth man to play 350 league games the saints reward him with a seemingly impossible victory."

Lets not forget that the AFL had us pencilled in for a trip to Perth to play Freo in Rd 1, but that was prior to the defection of our previous coach. We also know that we will be playing Freo at Etihad in Rd 2,3 or 4.
Momentum is BIG in the first 5 Rds for a variety of reasons. Playing Port & Freo, with the Freo game being over here is pretty damm good from a football perspective but we will need a home game v one of the bigger Victorian based clubs in the first 5 for the membership & merchandise departments to build some momentum !!

How glamorous - Sunday twilight against Port Bl00dy Adelaide!
How much of the stands will be covered with those huge banners!

FFS everyone play each other frigging once!
Greedy arses....
Greedy arses....
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

Best compromise is to split into two pools and ditch the pre-season comp as every team will, effectively, play three full pre-season games now anyway.

It was always going to hapen in Perth. Then our ex coach defected and the AFL decided that St Kilda v Freo would be better in Melbourne. The swap around means that we now play Freo in Rd 2,3 or 4 !!Sainternist wrote:I thought we were going to get Freo in the first round? Would have made sense. Typical of the AFL to divise an anti-climatic opening round.

Life Long Saint - whilst that fixturing system is a whole lot fairer than what we have at the moment, it is questionable whether you would get the best 8 teams overall making the finals each year ...
For example, using that system in 2011, you would have had the following teams through from each pool:
Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn and Carlton from pool #1
West Coast, Sydney, North Melbourne and Fremantle from pool #2
Two sides - St Kilda and Essendon - would have missed the finals, when those two sides were actually better than the two that would have made it - e.g. North and Fremantle.
Fremantle in particular would have made the finals, despite losing their last 6 matches.
So arguably you are not getting the best 8 teams making the finals.
HOWEVER - arguably the inequities in the current draw prevent the best 8 sides from playing finals ANYWAY ... e.g. the fixturing of interstate matches, matches against the weakest teams etc. actually means that some sides gain such an advantage through the fixture that they make the finals when they really shouldn't ...
And the results from each pool would no doubt be very different when the pools were split like that ...
But it's an interesting proposition.
