Salary Cap & Delisting

Post: # 1165882Post St Lenny »

How did we get into such a situation with our salary cap and why dont other top sides have the same problem.

Why havnt we delisted more? We dont have to delist our top players. in fact we would be mad to. But there is quite a few players who have not come on and been with us for quite a long time, why no get rid of them? Or did we and couldnt get anything for them.

I think you will find Collingwood and Carlton are in the same boat as us at the moment.

the was no bad luck.

Just bad management and poor negotiation. In fairness our good players had to take the bulk of the money because our players from15 down are ordinary at best and would attract no interest from other clubs. But it seems our players get benefits when they play well but people like Roo should have handed there pay cheques back this year. He may be our next Hamill

Other sides do have the same problem. Many have lost stars after successful periods because of it. We have not.

The first list lodgement isn't due til the end of the month, the delistings will happen sometime between now and then.

Don't get sucked in by the media, it's not anywhere near as bad as it's made out to be. We all seem to be jumping at shadows these days.

It's not just media talk Beno88. The club is openly saying that they will be forced to ask players to take pay cuts to keep us under the cap. If we hang on to our uncontracted GOP's now we can't move to lock up players like Goddard. We'll be losing players... we already lost Walsh... it's just who and how many.

I feel a little silly asking this but what does GOP stand for?

We are under SC pressure due to bonus payments for the successful years of 2009-2010.

Players have bonuses written into their contracts (especially the top liners) and these bonuses were deferred to 2011 so that we were in this position when we were really chanllenging for the flag (& having pressure to drop senior players from the list).

It happens in footy clubs all the time....

We also have our top 10 players on exceptionally good coin as they are all in the prime of their careers. We have moved to sign them up & stop them from taking up offers at other clubs on ridiculous $$$.

Pelchen will sort it out & if players like Ray aren't prepared to stay on reduced contracts then they'll take their chances in the draft.

We are definitely not the only one. Carlton and Collingwood will lose players this year due to the salary cap.

Geelong lost King due to salary cap. Ablett leaving definitely helped their situation. Also lost Mumford as couldn't match his salary ala Tommy Walsh.

Unsure how Hawthorn have kept their stars, then added to it, I think they'll be ripe for the picking when their younger stars like Suckling, Smith and Shiels hit their straps and demand some good coin.

So while the media are focussing on us, we aren't alone and we are suffering for our own 'relative' success.

A player who was struggling to get a game is hardly a star.

Collingwood are yet to lose anyone but face very similar salary cap pressures.

Hawthorn had to let Kennedy and McGlynn go.

A player who was struggling to get a game is hardly a star. You're right an ex captain.. Priority DP , Excellent leader, was hardly a star. He wouldn't have made any difference to our 2010 campaign

Hawthorn was a team of mostly kids and soon to be retirees when they won the flag so they would have been on little coin at the time and then they had a s*** next season so Hawthorn wouldn't have had pay the players as much when they negotiated new deals.

Imagine if a few of our younger ones had come on a lot this year, like Rhys, or Tom Lynch for example, or if Tommy had actually played some senior games and done well? We would have been in even deeper s*** than we are now. It seems we left no room at all in our salary cap for any of our younger ones to progress.

And that is why it is bad management. We didnt allow for younger guys to improve. Yes other clubs will lose players but that is due to younger guys improving and wanting better contracts. it seems the only younger guy who got a better contract from us was Jack so how the hell did we get in this position.

Be interesting to add up the wgaes of Lynch & Walsh (who have both gone)together with the wages of Gardiner (officially retired) Baker, Eddy and McQualter who were all "retired" (to be delisted) by the club. Just how far over the SC are we?????? Our 2 vets this year are Lenny and Bakes, so with Bakes now gone who is eligible to be our other vet.
