The fact that Sydey wanted him caused us to value him higher than his performances warranted.
Sure he may be good in the future, but except for the game where he kicked 6 goals was not beating down the door to be promoted to the seniors.
When you compare him to what Fev did in the VFL in the late season, he is not irreplaceble.
Kennelly had a lot to do with urging him to move to Sydney.

One year will be our year
Not sure if its already been mentioned but im sure watters said this morning walsh was "absolutely" off the trade table. I know walsh was only a rookie but I would really appreciate stkilda making an effort to explain why this has occured given our new coach said he was "absoultely" not going to be traded.
He WAS NOT on the trade table, we didn't float him...hayes66 wrote:Not sure if its already been mentioned but im sure watters said this morning walsh was "absolutely" off the trade table. We did float Gram, Dawson, Ray etc....
HOWEVER - Sydney offered him a shitload of cash, we couldn't come to the party...it was get pick 35 or get NOTHING. If the player leaves for the draft then we get nothing. I'd rather pick 35.
I hope the step from VFL to AFL is a huge one & Walsh is a massive failure...harsh but who gives a fk - I'm a Saints supporter.

Not happy.Earlier on Monday, new Saints coach Scott Watters told afl.com.au's Trade Week Radio that Walsh would not be traded.
I am one of Tommy's sponsors.
I think he has terrific potential.
Looks like Watters' is a LIAR as well!!!!

At least we learnt from the Ball debacle.savatage wrote:He WAS NOT on the trade table, we didn't float him...hayes66 wrote:Not sure if its already been mentioned but im sure watters said this morning walsh was "absolutely" off the trade table. Some of you people really give me the sh1ts...
Here is a guy who has played our game for less than three years who played a handful of resonable games with a bottom 4 VFL side who lost twice as many games as they won.
You people act as though he were the messiah...
Well let me tell you... HE IS NOT THE MESSIAH...

obviously the retired irishman at the swans got in his ear.
I'm over "irish" recruits especially those who go home ....come back
and take the spot of a young aussie player waiting for a chance.
Once they go home they shouldn't be allowed to change their minds
& return here & straight back into the system...Kennelly & clarke !!

I couldn't give a stuff about T Lynch, never rated him...think he'll be very easy to cover. POTENTIALLY T Walsh can be a very good player....Con Gorozidis wrote:When all is said and done we lost 2 guys 190cm + in their early 20's with potential and got F*** all for them.
Its a crap result and I lay the blame firmly at Lyons feet.
People dont decide to leave a club during trade week - People generally leave after months and months of unhappiness.
He is not the messiah but he IS an ungrateful c***.FortiusQuoFidelius wrote:Some of you people really give me the sh1ts...

Perhaps he was gonna walk, price on his head, & get to Sydney anyway?!..hayes66 wrote:Not sure if its already been mentioned but im sure watters said this morning walsh was "absolutely" off the trade table. Better to get something, 2 usable picks no less, than what we got in the Ball deal.. Zero.
IMO, realistically, we didn't lose out that much.. Not a nice outcome, we would've tried, got nowhere, salvaged something.

Fine, I would hope we didnt float him. But in all honesty I would think the statement that he is "absolutely off the trade table" is a fair suggestion to imply that he was not going to be traded. And if the statement was ment to be as cryptic as your saying, implying we are not trying to trade him, then I am still disappointed and would like an explanation. Im a saints supporter as well and as a saints supporter I was excited about the future of one of our saints players so as a saints supporter I am slightly disappointed. Just because you barack for a team doesnt mean you have to agree with everything they do and in this instance I am feeling like we have made a mistake. Tommy might not make it but we dont know, and I wanted to find out.savatage wrote:He WAS NOT on the trade table, we didn't float him...hayes66 wrote:Not sure if its already been mentioned but im sure watters said this morning walsh was "absolutely" off the trade table. I'm not as concerned with Walsh leaving as others are on here. He was a rookie, who kicked 6 one game and looked ok for a couple of years at VFL level only.
The fact that we moved on a trade means that he was probably as good as gone anyway. And we could NEVER match his salary at Sydney considering we are trying to make some space. Is there a reason why Simpkin, Stanley, Johnson, Lynch, Pattison all got games ahead of him? Please, lets look past the I hate RL sides of things... his worth has been inflated by not only that foolish recruiting manager but the promise of things to come.
He had hardly picked up a footy before he came here, and big men develop slower, so what did he expect, to play full games? I would have liked to see him at some stage on the big stage and if he had've lost to Melbourne he probably would have been given a chance but one big showing at Sandy doesn't warrant a month in the AFL when we are fighting to make the finals.
He wasn't brought up here, so a love for a team isn't exactly running through his veins. Ireland has gone to the shitter financially, if I'd gone over to Ireland, had two years at Kerry- fulfilled my contract, then another club had promised me 4 times the amount of money I was getting and security in the form of playing - I know what I'd choose.
When we see what Lisle, Johnston, Gunston and now Walsh have gotten... I still can't believe what we gave up for Tommy Lynch. I probably sound like a broken record but he was worth more than that. Now we almost MUST make a play for Fevola, if not purely for security.

Would you rather Walsh had walked for nothing?
That would have a familiar ring EM.
I know your upset and I can understand that, but Tommy didn't want to play for our club anymore.

Not completely serious ... Peake's time just happens to coincide with two of our worst recruiting years in the last decade. That those two drafts were immediately followed by premiership challenges helmed by a conservative coach adds to a rotten combination.hayes66 wrote:Dont want to be falling victim to sarcasm here, like so many do, but you are not serious are you? He isnt here anymore and he didnt trade these players away. It wouldnt have been his decision to trade for Lovett and as a recruiter im sure he wouldve preferred a pick and im sure he would have preferred to keep walsh and is probably shattered his gone.InkerSaint wrote:I blame John Peake!
Our first round picks from the two years under his watch are now torched in the space of a week.
Although 2009's pick 16 was already burnt, Walsh was the justification for gambling with it.
Saints must be looking for draft picks after missing other deals - delistings to come.
Pelchen will no doubt carry the credit (or the can) for this week's outcome. Let's see what the draft brings.

I would have gone too if I was TW. Sydney have proved they can make an Irish guy succeed. That tadghghggh kenellllly guy would have got on the phone and talked up potatoes stew Guiness in Sydney. If TW doesn't want to be a saint then see ya later. FFS we put development into all players not just the Irish ones. Club is bigger than one player who hasn't done anything yet.

What an overreaction. Watters says he wants to keep him and tries to make the most firm statement he could about it. Who knows what went down late in the day?
The guy wanted more money - can't blame him for that. I think the club handled it pretty well - they dragged it out to the last minute to try and change the result but at the very least ensured that we got the most we could for him.
People have been saying that this draft is compromised and are rating it fairly poorly. All clubs are going to suffer this year due to GWS taking most of the early picks, but I'd like to think that after our last couple of trades we're in a better position than most find some decent prospects.
