Watters speaks......
Spoke very well. Key points:
Game styles always evolve across afl, even within 6 months. Our aim to be always at the fore-front of that.
Admires the defensive side of our game, but looking to add layers to our game approach.
Beleives the club has a great core leadership group & and great young kids coming through.
Dosen't believe that re-building & playing a stable team for a flag are mutually exclusive, feels you need to do both and can continually.
Seeing his role as part of a team of people. (Yah!, finally someone who isn't a megalomanic who wants to control everything)
Professionalism and very high standards to be set and aimed for on and off field.
Culture is something that always evolves and need to work on. Talked about club as whole not just the team.
He was very impressed with the thoroughness of the selection process, and gave him confidence about the whole club.
He is very excited and can't wait to get started.

Also made the point about 'room for improvement' in player development. In other words, that's been a bit of a weakness for us. He said that no just young players coming through, bit everyone on list.
This is one area that concnerned me, we were not developing or improving the abilities (physical/mental) of players on our list as much as other top clubs. Part of that was the lack of training facilities, before Seaford, and partly funds, BUT its also a philosophy, which I think RL, especially over the last few years, didn't focus enough on...

I must admit that prior to the interviews that I knew very little about him.
But from all that I have read, and watched recently, which includes older material he genuinely does seem to be exactly what we need at present.
Is strong on developing players...and importantly with our recent turmoil (2 GF losses plus the off-field issues) is very "inclusive".
Being a complete outsider allows him to take a fresh look at every player.
The unknown of course is how good he will be strategically...though Watters himself did state today that gamestyles need to change rapidly these days and so that is a good sign. though knowing that you need to change, and how you need to change are two quite different things.
I think he will have a great ally in Pelchen, and the two of them having effectively at the same time should be a good thing as neither will have any St Kilda 'baggage" to worry about.

Never heard him speak before, but I remember when he left the Eagles he asked to be traded to the Saints. I was pretty happy at the thought of him coming here, but the eagles told him he could go to any other club (if I remember correctly they were concerned that he might team too well with plugger), so off to the swans he went.saintsRrising wrote:I must admit that prior to the interviews that I knew very little about him.
*Allegedly.
