I don't buy into creating a token job for him.

I don't see how he is any less St Kilda by continuing his apprenticeship.
It's the way it is handled is the key. There are ways to handle the exit of a club person, and then there are WAYS.

St Kilda has a history of going down the WAYS route.
Sorry SEN, but I don't understand.

By ways, do you mean he was unsuccessful in his application?

Like I said, I hope the club haven't made a royal mess of something else, but it doesn't appear to be anything untoward yet.

Just a guy missing out on getting a job he would of really liked?

Unless there is more?
I'm just saying there is a right way and a wrong way to handle situations. St Kilda generally pick the wrong way. That's all I am saying.

The Port Melbourne facebook page was saying this morning that it belives that Gary Ayres will be announced as the Director of Coaching at St Kilda to the new coach shortly

That would lead me to belive either Harvs or Watters will get the nod.

No article link or source was listed however the page is uaually on the money since it is run by a staff member at Port.

I like the idea of a "mentor/coaching director" supporting a younger coach. The most important issue however, is "how will they get on," which is difficult to get a handle on - egos are big in the AFL !

Hurricane - the Age has been shouting that Harves is out of the running. Why is it that you are still nominating him as a likely Coach ?

I never really rated Ayres that highly as a coach, but I really warmed to him at VFL level.

I think he will be a huge asset if this report is true.

It's mentioned briefly in the print version of the HS also, though I can't see it online.

Just read Caro's article for the first time.

Some fact in there. One glaring error, but I guess it would depend on who she spoke to.

An interesting fact is that Robert Harvey was on the Carlton coaching staff before returning to St Kilda as an assistant coach. Can these two moves be regarded as broadening one's experince in coaching? Another thing is, look up 'Robert Harvey' on Wikipedia (there probably other summaries of his career, but this an open source) because it will bring things in to perspective about this legendary footballer

I don't believe Harvs is the sort of guy who'd quit after the first hurdle. Nor do I believe he'd take offense at the decision the club has made. If he's anything like how he played, he'll get up and have another crack at it later on and take the process on as further experience.

I personally thought he was too early into his coaching career to be taking this particular job on. He's had 3yrs? Hird only did as well as he did because Bomber was in his ear. Perhaps if Malthouse was in Harveys ear it'd be a different scenario, but that's not going to happen. What about Scott? What coaching apprenticeship has he had? I'm not familiar with his rise to the top job at Geelong.

Nonetheless Harvs would have been defending his postion in the coaches box. He mightn't be required when the new head coach starts the job and no other option than to go for it.

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

The majority of pundits claim he doesn't have the experience to do the senior job at St Kilda. So if he wants to be a senior coach he has to be allowed to do an apprenticeship elsewhere... even if it is with the ferals. I'm sure the Saints board and all of our supporters would love Robbie to become our coach one day and if this move brings that day closer to fruition so be it. Banger for coach in 2017!
