"There's been a lot of conjecture surrounding our TPP position. We're in a delicate position, but at the same time it's still very manageable.

For a club that has played in Finals for the last 4yrs the cap is always going too be tight so let Pelchen do his job and we will judge him on that in 12mths, 24 mths .
Given that every club has to spend 92.5% of the cap and I would doubt many clubs are spending less than 95%, which only leaves 5% of spare room in any season for any club. If you have a couple of players on performance based contracts who end up playing more senior games than you might have expected (in our case maybe Steven and Armitage), or a couple of long term injuries (Hayes and Gwilt) the spare room can disappear very quickly.
From memory I think the salary cap is around the $8.5 million mark, which means the average wage is around $200k. Allowing for first and second year players getting around $75k, anyone who is getting regular senior footy would be on more than average. That being the case, if we say our top 6 are safe, we could lose any one or two of the next dozen players and probably still make significant savings (at least I think that's where they would be looking).
How the hell are we that far over the cap that we need to cull multiple players? Why aren't we already in trouble?? Maybe we really do have some crap administrators.

AFL salary cap investigator Ken Wood has been a regular visitor to the Saints' Seaford base in recent weeks. He is understood to have found the Saints to be in breach of their salary cap but has given them room to move before the deadline of October 31.
You really gotta wonder.... if true, utterly diabolical.
i'd be more worried about who is leaking sensitive information...the club or the afl.....

I've been thinking about it listening to all the 'news' on St Kilda this morning.
The bonus with recycled players is they come cheaper.
However what happens when their performances improve to perhaps command more money than originally anticipated?
Given age, they must creep up the $$ ladder quicker than kids?
We have less kids given we have brought in mature players, could the contibute to the tightness of the cap?
Instead of having an abundance of 20-22 year olds, we have hardly any, and a chunk of older guys who after turning their careers around at St Kilda...that probably expect more?
In saying all that, be very surprised if there isn't another 5 or so clubs in exactly the same position.
Pies are already been talking Beams, MaCaffer, McCarthy in trade week....Krakouer is asking for $500 and it's getting tough for them.

You make a couple of good points. Which is wy I said above that if we lost one or two players in our 7-18 group and replaced tham with first year players we'd save a fair bit without having to trade a gun.
I don't necessarily agree, though, that recycled players always come cheaper. If they've been delisted (eg Dawson) yes, you could get them for nothing, but when they are regular players at their previous clubs (Dempster, Schneider) I would think you would generally have to offer more money to get them to change clubs.

Yep but not many on the way down have to trade to get out of it. Brisbane is one but they at least have 3 premierships in the last 10 years.Surely you can see at least poor list management for this to happen.
