McCarthy from Collingwood?
22 Year old midfielder who is very very unlucky not to be playing 22 games a year.. just cant break into their midfield and will look for another club next year. Good solid midfielder who kicks goals.
Could be a handy addition to our midfield, add some depth.
Should we go after him next week?

I actually like McCarthy - had thought this would be his year at the Pies.SaintSimmo wrote:22 Year old midfielder who is very very unlucky not to be playing 22 games a year.. just cant break into their midfield and will look for another club next year. Good solid midfielder who kicks goals.

McCaffer is the other one - played in their premiership last year but didnt play many games this year. Honestly, if they are put on the market, I couldnt see us playing for them. They are both probably not within our needs IMO.
Trick is going to be what we would have to give up for them...
If we could get them for cheap, then yeah, why not. But personally I wouldnt want us giving away too much for players that may not be in our best 22 either.
May be worth a second round pick, but not much else really. Similar value to a Dawson/Jones/Peake...

McCarthy involved in a very ugly scene at an Albert Park house post-Grand Final last year... would not help the club's reputation.
Toovey might get wedgied in the locker rooms a couple of times after his little dog act at the opening bounce of this year's round 11 game.
Neither are viable candidates.

No to Toovey and McCarthy.
McCaffer is a bigger bodied better version of McQualter. Great forward line pressure as a defensive forward. Kicks a few goals too. Has been injured all year but had a good 2010. Only if cheap. Also from Gippsland like several other of the team. I can see a spot for him in our best side.

Back to the old ways.....not trust our youth, pick up a mid twenty something GOP to do a defensive ROLE in the team...
Why the hell pick up a DEFENSIVE fwd......why not a fwd with abilty who makes defenders defend..
we saw the best ways to control Davis, O'Brien, Shaw in the GF this year....make them defend good players....they cannot do it...

You need to qualify that by saying that they cannot do it when the opposition is bringing it into the forward line clearly and when the midfield is at least breaking even.BigMart wrote:Back to the old ways.....not trust our youth, pick up a mid twenty something GOP to do a defensive ROLE in the team...

IMO:
McCarthy- a good average player. Upgrade on Polo. If he was delisted and available at our 3rd/4th round ild take him.
Toovey- Decent stopper, but would NOT be an upgrade on either Gram or Dempster. Do not want.
Macaffer- Ild be interested. He's a very good defensive forward, and kicks goals, even thought he's sort of pidgeonholed there. Releasing Armo? Good Mark, gets goals. Worth our second round if available.
