Strength of this years National Draft...

Post: # 1156388Post WinnersOnly »

I know a number of experts have said that this years draft is shallow, but from what I have seen there just isn't the same top echelon players to be had in the first round.

IMO the strength of this years National Draft will be the eveness particularly Round 2 selections which could quite possibly unfold some real diamonds.

Hopefully the SAINTS recruiting team looks at this and attempts to collect as many picks as possible between selections 25-50. I think there will be some really strong players slip through and if we are prepared we could pick the players we want to fill our list requirements within that band.

Full Forward
Ruckman
Full Back
Midfied pace and clearance specialists
Half Forwards - goal kickers.

SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!

Last year wasn't meant to be that great either but we got some nice players with late picks. It's a shame we don't have a coach with a wish list ready to go. I still wish we could get johnny Patton though he will be a gun, Riewoldt style and future captain material. He is a saints man so hopefully he will get sick of Liverpool and head back to us.

We may have a coach by the time the draft comes around on November 24. Well i bloody hope so.
Pelchen and other coaching/recruiting staff should be all over the draftees for the next month and a half.

My recollection is that last year's draft was very highly rated. As opposed to this year which is though very shallow...

It is a real raffle after about 10 - 12 picks IMO. Whether or not the next batch make it or not seems a bit hit and miss.

chad wingard is slowly dropping down the pecking order. he'll probably slip below pick 6, maybe even further.

Last two players to drop were Darling and Butcher, who were both rated as certain top 3 picks earlier on in their draft year. Both of which seem likely to become genuine AFL superstars.

Having said that, there's no way in hell we'll get Wingard.

Port will more than likely be a top 4 side again before us. They have an outstanding core of talented young players.

The move to Adelaide Oval will help them drastically. Once they start winning again, which they will, the members will come out of the woodwork and they'll be able to support themselves. They have almost 37,000 members this year, and they have been absolute poo, we've only got a couple of thousand more than that and we were considered a top 4 team at the beginning of the year.

Are all young enough and have shown enough to be there for their next serious challenge. I genuinely believe they could be a top 4 team within 2-3 years. Some of those players listed above are absolute rippers. You could build a team around Butcher. And the amount of quality midfielders they have is outstanding.

Throw in a couple of handy draft selections this year and next and you could see them rise from no where.

Every year is a shallow year according to the recruiting managers. It's a built in excuse for when you need to explain your poor performance if things go wrong!

The west Australian had a story on a kid from halls creek in remote WA who on his first WA testing was only 4cm off Nic Nat vertical leap record... He kicked 4 goals in his colts debut and then doubled that the next week kickin 8goals ... Raw talent could slip to a second/third rounder

Toby Greene is a midfielder to keep an eye on. I had a bit to do with him at junior level and he has come on in leaps and bounds. Has pace. Good skills and is aslo a goal kicker. Maybe on a par with Joal Smith before his injury.

I've read that there are a number of recruiting managers who are already excited about the 2013 Draft. A very good indicator will come in Dec-Jan when clubs with compensation picks need to inform the ALF if they will be using these picks !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

you're still not selling it to me. a see the players that i mentioned, some low draft picks who haven't proven themselves yet and a bunch of underachieving hacks.

not to mention the financial state of the place.

I dont believe Winguard is going to drop very far. He did very well in the speed tests today apparently. one of the few to go under 3 seconds for the 20 metres.

Patton, Coniglio and Tyson are locks for the top 3 - Wingard could be picked up at 4...Buntine, Longer highly rated. Longer the standout ruck.

I actually go to school with Toby and also Tom Curran (who i believe we should pick up. Tom has been playing in defense in the tac cup, when he is a true CHF, due to jon patton's outstanding performance, however he is a great player who would be a handy addition to our forward line in the future). In the case of Toby, he is a great player, but has a bit of an attitude problem, and i reckon he will go much before our first pick (i have heard that sydney, gws, essendon are all very interested). Another player to look out for - Ben Darrou, he is a ready made player who would be more than handy player.

* side note, good article about curran in the age today - http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/t ... 1l7f7.html

Where'd you get your info from? The phantom drafts I've read suggest he's a 4th rounder.

For our first pick I'm leaning towards Mitch Grigg - good skills and wins the hard ball...

i coached Billy Longer in State Champ Basketball for a few years and he was rated as potentially being better than Kruizer by the folk who coached both @ Northern. He is suposed to grow to 6'10" and is a very strong athlete. He will be going to an interstate club no doubt about it.
