Port is a cashed up club with players fighting for their footy future. I'd be more impressed with what he could achieve with say Frankston.
You could say the same for Williamstown.
They have an AFL allignment (and the money is brings), Port dont
They had 15 AFL listed players trying to impress a new Western Bulldogs coach, Port didnt
What I saw was a well drilled, skillful and (best of all) passionate side willing to do whatever it takes for the jumper on their back.
We need that. I want that. IMHO Ayres can bring us that

The willy guys already have AFL contracts, the Port guys are either aspiring or on their last opportunity.
22 players playing and training as one unit all season against two groups of players with different playing and training experiences.
If Ayres is so good, how come he is not in the current AFL system?

I will support Gary Ayres to coach St Kilda if he gets the job.
He lead Port Melbourne to an undefeated season and defeated a side stacked with AFL grade talent by a big margain.
He had Port playing with pride, passion, determaination and skill all season long.
You can argue whatever you like but winning 21 games on the trott for any side is a great achivment. Its not all the players that drive that.

Can you actually give a reason apart from what you have said above why Ayresy would not be a good coach for the Saints.
He did nothing at the Crows, except lose the confidence of the playing group. In the end, it seemed he was ousted by the players as much as their whining supporters and admin. I'd give 'hairbrow' my support if the board thought he was the man, but I'd be very surprised...VFL and AFL are not the same, and he has a proven poor record in the AFL.

If you want to know EOAE, he was a complete failure at two of the best resourced clubs in the competition, in Geelong and Adelaide. I fail to see a single innovation he could bring into the club. I've heard him speak at three sportsman's nights and he is one of the most boring, self-absorbed, individuals I've ever ha the misfortune to listen to.
All he has going for him is the Port Melbourne premiership. Even that qualification is way below the standard we require. Why not get Gary Brice (triple premierships) Phil Cleary, or Norm Brown?
The fact is today's football is so dynamic, that anyone who hasn't been in it for the past coupe of years is doomed to failure. What is your obsession with him EOAE? Are you two related? Appointing the Mullett King would put our club back ten years. Where's your proof he could cut it at AL level, given his abject failure in the past, when he was armed with rich clubs stocked with talent?
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
if people want ayres simply because he took port to a flag in a lower comp, why not entice laird from central districts - best non-afl team in the land by a mile. and since he took over in 2003 they have played in every grand final.
won all but two of those and will win again tnis year.
