Last night's game proves why its good Lyon is gone
It was Lyon's ego and unwillingness to give Luke Ball a decent go that forced him to go to the Woods. Ball should have been given much more game time in the '09 GF--he was playing terrific football until he was taken off. It was then that same ego that got us nothing for Ball in the trade period.
Just remember Ball whenever you feel we should have locked Lyon in. Lyon has done us a favour by taking his inflated head to Freo!

Didn't the Hawks push forward quickly and directly though?
No stopping and chipping sideways or backward much either.
It's just their entries in 50 could've been better in the last qtr.
Collingwood would've stitched us up. We don't have the Hawks skill under extreme close pressure.

It's funny you should say that.kosifantutti23 wrote:And under Lyon we could never compete against that free flowing high scoring football we saw last night.
I reckon watching the game last night, Lyon would have been thinking to himself 'see, I told you. It's all about defence and keeping your opponent from scoring'.
He would have been thinking that right up until 3/4 time. But, as has been the case forever, and particularly with us, you need to be able to score to win.
And Collingwood were able to score. In a low scoring, tight struggle, they somehow found 5 goals! 5 goals!
They'd kicked 5 for 3 quarters, but then were able to turn it on and find another 5 in a Prelim final.
That was the difference.
It was the difference with us in 09 (granted, there were other things too), and it was the difference in 2010 aswell. Both games, when it was tight, we just couldn't manufacture that extra goal - and both times our opponents did.
You must be able to hurt your opponent offensively. And not a grinding hurt over 4 quarters - a short, sharp knockout blow whenever you need it. Not a 'death by 1000 cuts hurt - but a quick goal, or a quick burst that is found when you need it.
I have a suspicion that Lyon would still believe that it's all about keep your opponent to low scores - it's just that Hawthorn didn't defend well enough in the last quarter. He seems that stubborn in regards to his own ideals.
And I still believe, and last night further proves it for me, that he's wrong.

Sums Lyon and his philosophy up perfectly. Our willingness to tale risks went out the door when GT was sacked and replaced by this stubborn, inflexible, robot of a man. It cost us premierships IMO.Johnny Member wrote:It's funny you should say that.

Yep we should have taken risks with our kicking. The Hawks are a great kicking side but when they got tired in the last quarter their kicking started to struggle and the pies pounced. If we tried to play anything like the Hawks last night the game would have been over at quarter time. I love how we think it is that simple how the game should be played. Well it isnt otherwise morons on here could coach.bigcarl wrote:Sums Lyon and his philosophy up perfectly. Morons on here have the right to express opinions as does Lyon to take money rather than established working relationships that he cares about.plugger66 wrote:Yep we should have taken risks with our kicking. The point being expressed is are we better off without Lyon - all debatable but in a hypothetical world calling someone a moron is just that - moronic.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
I whinged about Ball from the very day he was traded......and will continue to.....and he has proved me right every step of the way, which was inevitable.....
Gun footballer, gun person
Ex saint captain and champion......and again last night hit hard
Infact he has kicked the critical goal in both their finals...

Maybe it would have been with the side that Lyon moulded for 5 years.
Our list under a different coach maybe of been able to do that, but thats all supposition.
But so is saying that the game would be over at quarter time.
Both opinions yet you're convinced one is very wrong.
The tired bit regarding the Hawks wouldn't have mattered if they had of kicked those easy goals early on.

I think we know our defence has improved and is one of the best, but I agree we need to hurt opponents on the score board.
The next coach needs to build on what we have and set up a forward structure where Nick is not the go to goal kicker all the time. He needs to be able to run up the ground and deliver the ball into the forward line.
I don't think we have had a long, straight kicking, dangerous foward since Heatley. We must get some goal kicking power or we will continue to be mid-pack.

Actually thought ball was ordinary last night until Hawthorn dropped off him at a crucial stopage at 15 metres from goal.
Ball was sloppy in his disposal, run down, and generally the worst mid in the Collingwood team last night.
The Pies should thank their lucky stars they have the calibre of Pendelbury and Swan to carry Ball.
Not saying Ball was bad, just the same as always. Hasn't really improved since leaving the Saints AFAIAC.
I am sure there will be some (one for sure) who will disagree, but who cares, I wish Ball well, have no animosity towards him. Obviously his contribution is important to Collingwood, but there is no doubt he is leveraged by the rest of the Pie mids.

Why couldn't he play like that for us?

It cost us premierships IMO.Johnny Member wrote:It's funny you should say that.
The point being expressed is are we better off without Lyon - all debatable but in a hypothetical world calling someone a moron is just that - moronic.
ok......... i'll go first...

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
