As others have said, he has the runs on the board. He developed the prototype of the style of football that Roos used to great success at the Swans and that Lyon further refined at the Saints.
Then he went to the Bulldogs and developed a far more direct, hard running and attacking style that clearly influenced the way a number of clubs have subsequently played (eg, Geelong).
If he came to us, I reckon he would very well placed to evolve "Saints Footy" into a more attacking style. I can't really think of anyone who could do this better.
I know some on here are obsessed with what they call the "press" and claim that Eade can't manage it. Well, I would suggest to them that they go back and look at the tapes of the 2009 PF (a game in which I continue to believe - despite the endless jeers I got on here for suggesting it - that Eade comprehensively outcoached Lyon). What Eade did there was a sort of "uber-press".
I have found the anti-Eade stuff on here over the past week extremely hard to fathom. Is it that he looks grumpy in the coaches box on TV and sometimes yells at players? Have any of you any idea what Lyon was like to players or assistant coaches who he felt stuffed up.?
I am told by fellow Tasmanian residents who know Eade well that, despite his public image as a mega-grump, he is really a rather caring sort of a bloke.
Anyway, I hope it is true that we are talking to him: even if I am the only person on here who thinks that.
Yep. Lyon was massivley out coached by an uber press and the dogs had an uber loss.
Seriously, what a superficial comment. The Dogs lost a game they really should have won. Lake was either extremely stupid or the victim of a ridiculous umpiring call after half-time and then, with a couple of minutes to go, Gia missed a gettable shot on the run which would have put them more than a goal ahead.
And we were clearly the better team going into the match, having steamrolled all opposition throughout the season.
Hardly an uber-loss in my opinion. More a superb performance by the Dogs (players or coach or both) to all but snatch it.

What is Eade's win/loss ratio ? .. I think you will find its not that bad compared to other coaches going around. Maybe with all the Football dept expereince that has walked out the door this year , an old head is exactly what we need.
As far as experienced coaches go - he is up to the mark with the current game. Give him a better resourced football department than what he is used to and who knows we could be back in contention next year.
I heard Leigh Matthews in an interview recently say he personally felt he was a better coach the longer he went at it. Having said that, I would not entertain any coach who has been out of the coaches box for more than 1 year.
I wouldnt be upset if Eade got the job, but I also wouldnt be upset if Hinkley, Watters or Tudor got the gig.

Eade has runs on the board and has a history of turning clubs around quickly. Took Sydney to a Grand Final in his first year and took the Bulldogs up the ladder to a couple of prelims.
The fact that Brad Johnson is on the panel will certainly be in his favour.
Not the worst choice in the world. Assisted by Gary Ayres could be a pretty good coaching group with young blokes around them. They would have fire in the belly as senior coaches having been close before.
Shoot, I'm talking myself into this!!!
If we want experience and Eade/Ayres combination would NOT be bad.
Be advised, whomever we select, it will get a caning by the press and one or two hindsight kings on here.
Lance or James??

Remember the 2009 Prelim against the Bulldogs ? That was our blockbuster year, and yet we barely made it past the Bullies.
They were the first team to work out St Kilda's press, and came up with a plan that just about defeated it. That was to press back even harder.
A kick and a doubtful free was all that was in it at the final siren, and for the entire last quarter I was giving full credit to
the Bullies coaching staff for taking it up to the Saints.
Which brings me this - I don't mind Eade at all.
(Sorry meher baba...I just read your first post !)

For the Dogs, another case of close enough but not enough in the end- we don't want that...we want all the way.

Yes. And who is going to give us that?

PRECISELY!!!!!!
A very dodgy free kick to Riewoldt and we make a grand final instead of the Dogs.
I'm not saying I want Eade, but the dogs missed out on a tiny bit of luck in that prelim.
Another No to Eade. Not convinced he's a coach that develops younger players, maybe the modern game has passed him by, and he has anger management problems....
Not one St Kilda wants or is interested in Rodney Eade as a coach.
So please think about this if you are considering Mr Eade and exclude him asap
read the three notes in this thread immediately before your note and get a different opinion. Despite that I would have to agree with your opinion on Eade.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.
You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency
I'm indifferent towards Eade as a person. Don't really like or dislike his personality.
But are we really in a position to question his coaching philosophy? If he passes all requirements and excels at what's expected of him moreso than all other candidates, why shouldn't we bring him in?
NO WAY to Eade. I love this club, but that would ALMOST make me no renew my membership. (I emphasise almost as I couldn't do it, but it would come close).
We want the club to move forward, not backwards. His 80's-90's style coaching techniques and the way he belittles his players is not conducive to winning premierships, hence he has never won one.

It was a joke and was related to your uber press comment. Even more sillier is your idea that we should look at the tapes to watch an uber press. I really laughed at that.
Gia's kick would have put them in front and not given them a bigger lead. Roos goal off the ground gave us the bigger lead so maybe you should go and watch the tape. Here ya go. Go spot the uber press.
Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.
Thanks for the tape. My bad: I misremembered the score when Gia missed. But, if he had kicked it - and he should have - the Dogs might well have held on.
Yes, certainly no sign of the uber press in the last few minutes of the game, but it was apparent to me watching the game on TV: at least over the first half. Short of a time machine, there's absolutely no other way of seeing it now other than on a tape.
Anyway, I still think it was a highly impressive feat of coaching by Eade. We had been amazingly dominant throughout 2009 and the Dogs lineup was clearly weaker thsn ours. We went into the game as almost unbackable favourites and we just scraped home in the end.

Eade did a lot without a very impressive list at a club with poor facilities.
Lyin didn't do enough with a very impressive list and poor facilities.
So what could Eade do with a still pretty good list and now good training facilities?
Always thought was tactically very smart.
Proved that at Sydney and then again at Footscray.
At worst he is a great fallback.
The other alternative is to go with an untried but promising young-gun like Watters and get Eade in as mentor/chairman of selectors.
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!
No doubt in my mind who I would prefer to see at the helm next year - Mark Williams. He knows how to get a team to the top - and keep them there until the luck you need to win a Flag falls your way (and luck is a major factor, let's face it). He also has the passion I like to see in a St Kilda coach a la Stan the Man in the late 90s.
Failing that, and seeing as though he isn't going to get looked at, I believe we need a coach with SENIOR coaching experience. Eade got the Swans into a Grand Final and kept the Bulldogs in the top three or four for several years. He may not have had luck on his side then, but that can change, just ask Malcolm Blight.
Both Williams and Eade have someting to prove and aren't too old to cut it.
