How can it be holding the ball when...
the player disposes of it properly
^%&^& that s***s me
twice in that last 1/4 a Hawthorn player had the ball, had prior opportunity... was tackled and handballed the ball away
both times they were pinged
WHAT THE F£C&?
the holding the ball rule is w/o a shadow of a doubt the most poorly understood rule in the game

Easily understood if Collingwood make the tackle.skeptic wrote:the player disposes of it properly

Rule is if they tackle when the heat the game is on the line, then it's holding the ball...regardless if the opposition has the ball...it's just holding the ball....and 50

That absolutely made me furious! We were watching the game in front of my wife's grandmother and her partner and I try to watch my language around her coz she's old fashioned like that but she didn't even bat an eyelid when I called that "bulls***".Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:yep and not even 10 seconds later they then give Collingwood a 50 meter pen......degruch wrote:

He got rid of the ball properly
It's supposed to be holding the ball if he is unable to get rid of it or disposes of it incorrectly
if you tackle a player by the waist and bring to ground and he dishes off a handball... it's not a free
a free kick for holding the ball is only meant to be payed when play stops... like a ball up... if the tackle doesn't stop play... how is it a free

Once tackled correctly if you've had prior opportunity you need to get rid of it immediately.skeptic wrote:WHY!!!degruch wrote:Schoenmakers? 360 degrees...gaaawn. Sorry.

If no prior you have an unspecified amount of time - which is a grey area.
However, most rules were originally made with equality in mind.
So that the smallest weakest player can tackle the biggest and strongest player yet still get a free if the big guy doesn't get rid of it in the correct amount of time.
The rules were originally designed for fairness and safety, and courage was rewarded.
We've got terribly lost along the way imo.
15.2.3 H olding the Football — Prior Opportunity/No
Prior Opportunity
Where the field Umpire is satisfied that a Player in possession
of the football:
(a) has had a prior opportunity to dispose of the football, the
field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against that Player
if the Player does not Kick or Handball the football
immediately when they are Correctly Tackled; or
(b) has not had a prior opportunity to dispose of the football, the
field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against that Player if,
upon being Correctly Tackled, the Player does not Correctly
Dispose or attempt to Correctly Dispose of the football after
being given a reasonable opportunity to do so.(c) Except in the instance of a poor bounce or throw, a Player
who takes possession of the football while contesting a
bounce or throw by a field Umpire or a boundary throw in,
shall be regarded as having had prior opportunity.

Not quite, because the tackle also has to stick.skeptic wrote:point taken Leo J
for mine that rule is pure complete stupidity and not in the spirit of the game
so if a player catches Milne when he's running into goal and Milne shrugs off the tackle and kicksa goal... he should be pinged.
what crap
It wouldn't go down on the stat sheet as a tackle and if it's not a tackle it can't be holding the ball.
Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friends.
ron barassi held a footy clinic that my dad went to back in the day, and my dad tackled him and appealed for holding the ball. my dad is 5 foot 5 and less than 60 kg as an adult (i reckon), and he was a boy then. barassi responded saying that it couldn't be holding the ball "because you have to retard me, son" (quote as close as i can remember).bozza1980 wrote:Not quite, because the tackle also has to stick.skeptic wrote:point taken Leo J

Its called momentum and crowd influence. I was at the game and never saw a replay but Cyril looked like he handballed it straight away - actually, I think I overheard the umpire go up with 'baallllll' as he was getting tackled.
Plus you can pretty much do anything to shephard these days, in addition to those two on the line, a Hawks player was shepharded from about 40 metres away in his forward line (probably wasn't picked up on the tv it was that far away) - has that rule changed or do you still need to be within 5 metres of the ball???
Hawks had one shockin arm chop go their way, filth went feral, then heaps which were much worse were missed.
Also, is Maxwell the worst captain/defender in the game?! What a spud!
