Would we lose much if we traded Goddard to GWS for one of the 4 17 yr olds plus a high draft pick?
BJ to me has never achieved at St.Kilda what he is capable of. He has never featured in the Brownlow, won a club championship. He was great in GF1 against the Pies, equal with Lenny, but he does not play like that on a weekly basis. I may be wrong but I cant remember him featuring in the Club Championship even.
If we are serious about rebuilding, we need to do something like this anyway.

Goddard is probably the best field kick in footy. Unless Pelchen has completely reversed since leaving Hawthorn, the only way BJ leaves is if he asks. You'd have to think that the untouchables would include BJ, Dal, Gwilt and Schneider on kicking alone.

Even if we swapped goddard for the young kid.. goddard would play for another team somewhere else while that kid can't play next year.

Yep. He is a must keep.

The Board will be concious that we cannot "afford" to "bottom out" - falling Membership, retaining/getting new Sponsors.

We also owe it to our top 6, not to bottom out. If they they see these signs, then we shouldn't be surprised to see them do a Ross and look after themselves.

Goddard has 3 to 7 years of footy in him. He's one of the great players of the AFL.

the probability of any of the 17 year olds being in the same league of goddard is low.

Secondly Goddard is about 3 years away from the veterans list, injury barring, I can't see him getting any worse, his body seems right, his endurance is excellent, he is talented in every facet of the game.

Goddard has already said no to massive offers from opposition teams and has shown loyalty to st kilda so far.

I expect him to be the saints millon dollar player when he goes on the vets list (counting as 500k for our salary cap).

the logic of trading goddard for a 17 year old is about as clever as trading Rio tinto for a start up company on the off chance it's a winner.

stupid decision at this stage IMO.

And cold.

Ironic that we bitch about lyon's loyalty when folks here want to screw over a club champion for a random with no form.

There is alot of speculation that BJ will be gone at the end of 2012 anyway. That is what I have based this thread on.

I don't want to trade him. But we could basically get the kid who would have gone Pick 1 in 2012 as well as probably pick 3 or 5 for him.

If the club wants to rebuild it's definitely gonna be tempting.

Of course this is only if BJ wants to go...

Which I really hope he doesn't.

But saying an 'untried' 17 year old is a little bit from the truth. Those 17 year olds will be very, very good players.

And if he's gonna go at the end of 2012, I really hope he contemplates leaving now. Cos we will get much, much more for him.

No he isn't. Off the top of my head he has been carved up by Watson, floppy haired Freo guy, Gibbs, Deledio this year. Great players don't get beaten as often as he has this year.

Having said that, I have no idea why the coach makes him responsible for an opponent rather than playing him to his strengths and making the opposition coach react.

I suppose I'll get flamed for criticising RL... oh, hang on...

This thread is in jest? Surely? Get rid of BJ? No freakin' way!!! If Pelchin even tries to trade him I will go down there and knock some sense into him myself!!

BJ is an integral part of our club. He bleeds RWB. Watch him fist punch his heart when he kicks a goal, watch his performances in last years grand final and you will see my point. We have already lost Luke Ball, let us not lose another important key part of the sum of our team.

Agree.

He's one of the few players in our team that can kick.

Goddard is one of the elite. There is no way he should be traded and especially for an unknown/ unproven kid. Whilst 2011 wasn't a great year I'm not for throwing the baby out with the bath water.
Trading the likes of Goddard out could fast track us to the bottom rungs of the ladder with no guarantee of getting back up. I say keep the good ones as well. The top teams have their share of top players. Goddard is a must keep. Quality also attracts quality. If a quality player becomes disenchanted with their club they will in all likelihood not want to come to the Saints if we bottom out.

FS, why would you trade "core" players like Goddard for high draft picks?

High draft picks doesn't guareentee you anything.

Look at Richmond, Aaron Fiora?

Please, what a joke of a suggest, how bout just getting rid of the old/not good enough players, and filling it with high quality youth?

Makes more sense, look at Geelong, they didn't remove their superstars ffs, they just added good youth to their core.

You don't trade a top player in hope of getting a top player.

He is a player we cannot afford to lose. Sure, he has come off an average season, but he'll be back in a big way next year after some proper down-time.

We are trading Gilbert, not Goddard.

Goddard is the type of player that if any other club asked about him during trade week we laugh in their face.

He is a must hang onto player

Putting Goddard up for trade is a horrid idea that will upset the supporter base and displease the playing list. Screams of desperation too.

If this were to happen, I'll find it very hard to support a team which lacks so much direction.
