What to do with Rhys Stanley?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What to do with Rhys Stanley? How do we make best use of him? Could he possible be developed as a very tall defender for instance?

Rhys has the physical attributes to become a very good footballer and has shown enough at afl level to suggest he will be a very good player in the future. At present he is too skinny/fragile to play in the ruck, and doesn't yet lead to the right spots when playing as a forward. He is only 21 in december however and at 200cm was always going to take a little longer to develop. The New Zealand indiscretion coupled with persistent hamstring injuries derailed this season but with a strong pre season I see Rhys rucking more frequently at Sandy and eventually breaking into the 22 initially as a key forward and eventually taking over from kosi (hopefully in 3-4 years) as the key forward/second ruckman. Rhys will never be a monster ruckman in the staven king mould but with the emergence of patrick Ryder and Nick nat etc. as very mobile ruckman Rhys could perform a similar role using his pace and leap to his advantage.

yup keep him
its been said he might be a tad lazy
whether this is true or not i have no idea
of the two games ive seen of sandy he wasnt playing (hammie i think)
i think he has the physical attributes, just a little more bulk up top, not much and agree, he could be a real gun
i still think he will be a good player for us one day

Ross certainly gave the impression that Rhys would be kept on the list in his One Week at a Time interview a few weeks ago.suss wrote:Spinner wrote:Sainterman wrote:Highly doubt he will be on the list in 2012.
Wow
Even given our lack of ruckmen... and forwards?
Ross is still a fan - said as much in a recent interview.

Highly doubt he won`t be. But he would not want another preseason like last year, if puts in a solid summer he could really step up. As anothe rposter metioned, if he improves like Bic Mac did this year he could be very valuable.Sainterman wrote:Highly doubt he will be on the list in 2012.

We have to persevere with guys like Rhys and give him confidence with a string of consecutive matches. If he's no good he's no good, but we know that big blokes take time and we have to see if he wants to work hard and get his body ready this pre-season for the opportunity that lays ahead.Sainterman wrote:Highly doubt he will be on the list in 2012.
Do you think that the current list is on the way up in terms of optimum output and do you think that guys like Polo and Ray, Raf and Jonesey, and Zac Dawson will improve? I don't think they will...I'd say that the team is pretty much predictable and opposition coaches have been working on nullifying our stars for the last five years. Dal has obviously had a brilliant yr in 2011 and Dempster has improved, but beyond those two I'm not sure where you'd say there is upside with the list as it is.
If we get them all out on the park injury free and we get Gwilt and Lenny back in the team, I'm sure we can challenge, but it's amazing how new blood can add spark and enthusiasm and - most importantly - competition for places in the side.

Agree with this.savatage wrote:Some of you are very impatient....Beanpoles take a long time to develop...he won't be at his peak for 4-5 years.
I still regard one of my more stupid footy pronouncements as being that a young Spida Everitt (who I was regularly watching make almighty stuff ups in the magoos) would "never play a senior game of AFL football".
Mind you, he did end up proving himself to be a massive tool...

Don't take my statement as gospel on this one. Just think there might be some attittude issues, a percieved lack of any defensive side to his game (and RL makes this a mandatory for all players) as well as a lack of development when it comes to Rhys. I think he is more loved on Saintsational than anywhere else in the footy world. That being said, there may well be some interest in him on the trade table.
I am expecting there will be 12+ changes once you take into account retirements, delistings and trades. I have a feeling we will be very active over the summer.

Fair enough Beno, just heard the complete opposite...but as I said, don't take it as gospel in this case.Beno88 wrote:Rhys will be a St.Kilda in 2012. Guaranteed. Plus, when it comes to silly season, strange things happen.

I would love to see how many injuries he gets once he piles on all that weight.Beno88 wrote:Rhys will be a St.Kilda in 2012. Guaranteed. Lyon is grooming him to become a ruckman and wants him to gain 10-15kgs over the off/pre season.Sainterman wrote:Highly doubt he will be on the list in 2012.

If he gained 10-15kg in one off season.... I would suggest most of that wouldnt be muscle.
Just a lot of Krispy Kreme donuts - Not unlike the three or so I just scoffed down at work!
I'd like to see him get some serious game time next year. We need to inject more young players into the side. Steven has grabbed his opportunity, Armitage I think is among our best 22 as well and Siposs and Cripps looked the goods when they played (before getting injured?). Walsh, Winmar and one of whoever we draft probably deserve a crack in round 1 as well.
I don't think 2012 should be a total rebuild year, as someone else mentioned - a transition would be better. If we can make the finals with 5 or 6 of the young players mentioned above playing most games - fantastic. We shouldn't be afraid to persist with them though even if they have a few poor games on the trot or how else are we going to unearth the next gun?

Is that a total of 4 or 5 years or another 4 or 5 years from now?savatage wrote:Some of you are very impatient....Beanpoles take a long time to develop...he won't be at his peak for 4-5 years.
Either way you are asking us to be extremely patient. Hope he comes good, but think if he is on the list next year he will need to improve significantly to still be there in 2013.
