Maybe because they realise that substance wins premierships.
Does it? Since when?
Plenty of pricks have won flags. Plenty of liars too.
Football substance. Defence.
Yeah, clearly. But name a coach who doesn't have defence as their number 1 priority?
They all do now. Malthouse started it at the Eagles, Roos took it to another level, then Geelong realised you needed incredible defence and awesome offence, then Lyon came along and upped the anti in regards to defence.
But now, all coaches focus on defence first. They all do, and pretty much have since day dot.
The difference is though, that to win the flag you need to be able to kick decent scores.
We should have won it twice with scores of 74 and 73
But we didn't. We didn't have that extra goal in us, when our opponents did!
Having said that, in 2009 we were fine. We had a freakishly good season from Roo so he was able to generate decent scores for us.
We'd caught the comp off guard and no one knew how to play us. We seemed to have the perfect balance.
I absolutely agree, in 2009 we should have won it. Great game plan, great team, terrible luck on the day!
But then last year we were a fair way off the mark. We were close obviously in GF1, but only because Collingwood didn't kick straight. But we still couldn't find that one last goal. Whereas Collingwood did the moment we got our noses in front.
And then obviously this year, the inability to score was disastrous. It was masked in 09, apparent last year, glaringly obvious this year!
And now that teams are able to defende as well as us, but still score in the top 4 of the comp, means we're nowhere near it really anymore.
