I really don't like being one of those "I know a guy who said this" people but for the sake of discussion, I have a Sandringham connection who a few weeks ago said Archer, Heyne and Smith (has a poor attitude) are all done - Heyne perhaps to the rookie list due to his contract; he also said Gardiner, Baker, Blake and Eddy were going to be finished at the end of the year also, but those are the more "obvious" moves that have been/would be made by the club staff.
As I said, this is for the sake of discussion - I'm not taking it as gospel myself.
With disposal an obvious sticking point, players like Heyne and Smith would be in the gun. They've had different years at Sandy - Heyne dropped to the reserves during the season and Smith was named an emergency only a week ago for the Saints, although with a number of the more likely players injured or not match-fit enough to be considered at the time (i.e. Hayes, Gwilt, Mini, Ledger, Cripps, Siposs, Winmar...). Smith would be the more likely to stay from what I've seen of them first-hand at AFL and VFL level (admittedly both not too much), his pace is handy and I thought he showed quite a bit in his debut in Round 3.

If we are talking about a new generation coming through, I think surely players such as Ray, Clarke, Polo, Gram, Peake and Jones must be looked at in terms of trading an/or delisting.

Before we go looking at names we should look at ideal numbers. It is said to be a very shallow draft this year, meaning that there won't be too many gems later on. I believe we've done enough trading for "role players" in recent years so I don't think we need to too active in trading for players. Trading for picks mightn't be all that fruitful this year either.
The ideal could be 5-6 picks in the first 4 rounds. Rookie picks are interesting. I see them as speculative picks. They don't cost much and you could get lucky, so go for the maximum.
If we are to believe what is being forecast, 2012 & 2013 will both be very strong and very deep drafts, so that would be the ideal time to cut deeply !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!
^^ Isn't there a limit or something on how many list changes you can make in one year?
In order to get ready for those so called 'juicer' drafts, we should start culling now.
Not many if any of the players we draft this year will be playing next year anyways. It's all about the players from the last 3-4 drafts coming through - and especially the last draft, I think.

If you cull now you have to replace now so I dont quite get what you mean.Quixote wrote:^^ Isn't there a limit or something on how many list changes you can make in one year?

The list above reads okay except the every player is tradeable part.plugger66 wrote:Season is over and I couldnt find another thread on this so lets get peoples ideas.

Surely no serious thought could be given to trading out: Dal Santo, Goddard, Fisher and Montagna. Roo despite having a poor year by his standards and kicking problems couldn't or wouldn't be traded. Then there players such as Hayes and Milne who are universally loved by all Saints fans and would never be traded out given their loyalty and age. Sipposs, Cripps, Steven and McEvoy as part of the next wave shouldn't be traded out either.
We'll see what happens. I know you have to trade quality to get quality but I don't want to see us completely bottom out either.
Gram, Gilbert, Kosi, Schneider, Ray and co who are regulars but not "first class" could have their names thrown about and I wouldn't care too much.
Re: Who should we delist
As you say to get good players you need to trade good players. Of the list you said only Gilbert is tradable. The others wouldnt be wanted by any other club or if they were they would be round 4 picks at best. If GWS said they would give is picks one and two for one of our superstars you would look at it and that is why i reckon everyone is tradable, well anyone who another club wants.Schillaci wrote:The list above reads okay except the every player is tradeable part.plugger66 wrote:Season is over and I couldnt find another thread on this so lets get peoples ideas.

I know this list got us to grand finals and all that, but at the moment it is an absolute train wreck! We can only delist a certain number of players so it will take a good 2 years to clean out our list the following players are not up to afl standard or past it and have to be cut/retire this year or next. I have 17 players! Bloody hell:
Baker - ret
Cahill
Clarke
Dempster
Gamble
Gardiner - ret
Heyne
Johnson
Jones
Lynch
McQualter - ret
Peake
Polo
Ray
Eddy - ret
Gilbert - GWS?
Gram - GWS?
We are totalling screwed for a long time, our list is very, very ordinary, it is amazing we have gotten as far as we have with it really.
The facts are I couldn't see many, if any of those guys getting a game in any of the top 4 teams. We have another long hard road ahead of us...

When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss

I think the list needs fresh eyes.
It's a conundrum our list I reckon.
All of my mates are adamant that the Saints are very, very good team with some very, very good players - but the coach holds them back and has cost us at least 1 flag.
Clearly, plenty of other people believe the exact opposite. They believe that we've got an average list that only due to great coaching, has been able to challenge for the flag twice.
I sit somewhere in the middle. and often swing between the two on a weekly basis!
In terms of the list, can we really guage our 'attacking' players fairly at the moment? In relation to skills and offensive footy, there's too much left to too few.
I mean, we did see a major improvement in Dal, Joey and BJ once Steven and Peake were given license to attack and take the game on. Once these guys picked up some slack in the 'offence' space, the other guys instantly came into to it too.
So rather than sacking Gram, Raph, Gilbert, and everyone else - what if we added a really highly skilled midfielder/running back into the mix instead?
Would that improve them, and therefore the team?
I mean, could those guys go to another club, with a really skillful list and suddenly be really good footballers again?
Or, perhaps we cut plenty now so we then genuinely bottom out once GWS and the Gold Coast have already ravaged the previous Drafts?

I think that is definitely the case in regards to the forward line. Ross has said on several occasions that they need to add talent up there in order to free-up Roo more. Look at Collingwood's forward line - multiple threats.
In regards to Raph, Polo, Jones et al I think there is a valid case to say you need to get rid of some of them in that I don't think skill-wise they are up to AFL standard - no matter who is around them.

Delist Definites
Dawson
Clarke
Polo
Schnieder
I don't care if there is short term pain for long term gain.
Dawson and Clarke CANNOT win us a grand final. Get rid of them and try some young guys.
PLEASE ROSS (who whoever is there next year) enough of playing these types of players that will never get us anywhere.
