2011 - Player by Player Ratings

Post: # 1135480Post bergholt »

Ordered by ratings out of 10 relative to (my) expectations. 5 is performing at expectations, 9 or 10 is a great year, 1 or 2 is a horrible year.

Nick Dal Santo: 23 games
8 - a really good season where he surpassed expectations, which in Lenny's absence was impressive

Stephen Milne - 23 games
8 - close to the best year of his career, single-handedly kept the forward line going, massive year at his age

Ben McEvoy: 22 games, 1 emergency
8 - took a big step in Gardy's absence and thinks like a top ruckman, but still needs to get a bit stronger

Sean Dempster: 23 games
8 - became a surprisingly good small defender in the absence of Bakes; just don't play him up forward please

Sam Fisher: 23 games
7 - halfway through the year he was the only bloke standing up, faded a bit but still a good season

Clinton Jones: 23 games
7 - didn't particularly improve (especially disposal) but was really consistent in standing up in Lenny's absence

Brett Peake: 19 games, 1 emergency, 3 at Sandy
7 - I thought he'd be out of the side this year and certainly was well ahead of that, faded late though

Dean Polo: 15 games, 1 emergency, 5 at Sandy, 3 injured
7 - gave us a lot more than I expected, not a star but could be a good trier for a while

Jack Steven: 21 games, 2 at Sandy
7 - played more games than I expected and took a step, is now a good player and could become very good with consistency

Arryn Siposs: 5 games, 2 emergency, 7 at Sandy, 2 at Sandy reserves, 6 injured
7 - well ahead of what I thought we'd get from a #75 draft pick, shows good signs though a long way to go

Jamie Cripps - 4 games, 1 emergency, 4 at Sandy, 13 injured
7 - showed real signs of being a good player but still a year or two away most likely

Leigh Montagna: 21 games, 1 injured, 1 suspended
6 - no doubt he's had better years, couldn't be as damaging when playing inside more in Lenny's absence

James Gwilt: 15 games, 8 injured
6 - very solid when in the side but unlucky with injury

David Armitage: 22 games, 1 suspended
6 - certainly his best season though still not great and still seems to go missing too often

Tommy Walsh - 4 emergency, 17 at Sandy, 1 at Sandy reserves, 1 injured
6 - all signs are that he will be good enough for AFL, expect to see a bit of him next year

Tom Ledger - 2 games, 1 emergency, 5 at Sandy, 16 injured
6 - also shows signs of being a good player but lots of injuries this year

Jarryn Geary: 8 games, 4 emergency, 4 at Sandy, 1 at Sandy reserves, 11 injured
6 - not bad given his long early injury, had an impact as a sub but needs to improve disposal to be a good player

Adam Schneider: 21 games, 1 at Sandy, 1 suspended
6 - solid year but he has all the tools to be a real star and I wish he'd just get there

Raph Clarke: 17 games, 2 emergency, 6 at Sandy
6 - a couple of really good games but still couldn't find the consistency required of a defender

Daniel Archer - 1 game, 2 emergency, 17 at Sandy, 1 at Sandy reserves, 1 injured
6 - I didn't expect to see him at all so I guess he exceeded expectations, but doesn't seem likely to be part of the future

Jackson Ferguson - 6 at Sandy, 5 at Sandy reserves, 12 injured
6 - sounds like he did better than I would have expected, long way to go though

Jason Blake: 12 games, 3 emergency, 4 at Sandy, 5 injured
5 - didn't do more than I expected but was honest and keeps giving his all, should hang around one more year

Zac Dawson: 20 games, 1 injured, 2 suspended
5 - beaten more often than we'd like but still was honest and kept trying back there

Ryan Gamble: 11 games, 9 emergency, 7 at Sandy
5 - I didn't expect much and that's essentially what I got, had one very good game and that was about it

Nick Winmar: 2 games, 7 emergency, 13 at Sandy, 2 injured
5 - still a long way from AFL standard given the small amount we've seen of him

Brendon Goddard: 23 games
5 - another who really missed Lenny Hayes, didn't approach his GF1 heroics

Justin Koschitzke: 13 games, 1 emergency, 3 at Sandy, 5 injured, 2 suspended
5 - don't expect him to be a superstar and you'll get honest key forward play (though inconsistent)

Jason Gram: 20 games, 2 at Sandy
5 - definitely not his best year but decent at times in a variety of roles including small defender

Tom Lynch: 5 games, 1 emergency, 13 at Sandy, 3 injured
5 - gave about what was expected in his first real year in the senior side, not going to be a superstar but could keep improving to be solid

Tom Simpkin: 2 games, 2 emergency, 17 at Sandy
5 - didn't see heaps of him but still looks to me like he could be a useful player for good while

Robert Eddy - 14 at Sandy, 8 injured
5 - exactly what I expected, zero games at AFL level

Warrick Andreoli - 6 at Sandy, 10 at Sandy reserves, 4 injured
5 - pretty much as expected for a rookie pick

Tom Curren - 10 at Sandy, 7 at Sandy reserves, 2 injured
5 - pretty much as expected for a rookie pick

Farren Ray: 21 games, 2 injured
4 - just didn't do that much, played some roles but didn't turn into a good player as I hoped

Andrew McQualter: 5 games, 8 emergency, 8 at Sandy, 7 injured
4 - last call for Mini and probably fair enough, just isn't quite good enough for AFL

Sam Gilbert: 23 games
4 - not as good as his last two years, looked rattled and made mistakes

Sam Crocker: 5 at Sandy, 5 at Sandy reserves, 13 injured
4 - didn't expect much but it would have been good to see him play most games rather than have long-running injuries

Steven Baker: 10 games, 8 emergency, 5 at Sandy, 2 injured, 2 suspended
4 - I thought he had another year in him, but got a touch slower and was fairly easily replaced by Dempster in the end

Will Johnson - 1 game, 15 at Sandy, 7 injured
4 - didn't expect much but doesn't look like he'll be a player

Alistair Smith - 3 games, 1 emergency, 14 at Sandy, 3 injured
3 - I expected a bit from this kid but he didn't really show much when in the side, still earned another year surely

Paul Cahill - 9 at Sandy, 4 at Sandy reserves, 8 injured
3 - reasonable to expect that he would have got close to a senior game this year, but nowhere near, not sure where he is now

Nick Riewoldt: 22 games, 1 suspended
2 - probably his worst year, injured I guess, not sure what happens next but I still think he can be a good player

Rhys Stanley: 2 games, 8 at Sandy, 11 injured
2 - I hoped we'd see a lot of him this year but was injured and had no impact when in the side, or even at Sandy by all reports

Nick Heyne: 16 at Sandy, 2 at Sandy reserves, 1 injured
2 - I didn't expect much and got a lot less, surely he's done

Lenny Hayes: 2 games, 23 injured
1 - injured very early so had effectively no output

Michael Gardiner: 1 game, 1 emergency, 7 at Sandy, 15 injured
1 - played a half and had essentially no impact on the year

Unusual rating of Gwilt

I had him at third in the b and f until he went down..... his season was an easy 8 for mine

Polo higher than Armitage???

Were they rated on expectation of them, or actual output....

as i said at the top - on my expectations of them. i expected armo to take the next step this year, while i expected about five ineffective games out of polo.

as for gwilt, i reckon he had a good season but in the end couldn't contribute enough because of injury, which dropped his rating a couple. similar to lenny - i didn't really want to give him a 1 but given he only played 1.5 games it was hard to suggest that his output was anywhere near my expectations.

yeah, relative to my expectations. i reckon the guy has been in the top five players for the last six years before this, so i had pretty high expectations of him. by any measure his season was not great, relative to my expectations it was really poor.

Sorry berholdt ridiculous thread

Based on expectation what is that

So you expected dal to be terrible but he was actually ok. So he gets 8!!!
Whilst Walsh played no senior games but based on an expectTion of what gets 5
Whereas in reality from what we saw in the international rules and preseason expectations were probably higher. Therefore his score based on expectation should be 2 or 3 as he actually failed to deliver

It's not ridiculous, but it is self-indulgent. Hardly alone on a forum though. Bergholt is allowed a say.

so your score for walsh is 2 or 3? fair enough. though i reckon your expectations were a bit too high.

i think my point is that everyone's ratings would be based on expectation to some extent. goddard had a season which for nick heyne would have been considered incredible. however, goddard has shown enough in the past that we (or I) expect a lot more from him. so he can't get an 8 despite being in our top 6 players for the year.

feel free to give your own ratings, i just wanted to vent. as we all do today.

Are you for real???? You rate Goddard in our best 6 players this year yet a player who has yet to play a game for us ahead of him. You say he, Walsh
will get games next year, have I missed something? Has Ross Lyon retired. He has been carried by our good players and has never trusted in youth, OFTEN plugging gaps with fringe players from other clubs instead of looking for young players with speed and kicking skills.
He inherited a good list from Thomas and our top players back then are still our top players now. If people think I am going senile at my age I would like to see a list of our top 5 players each year in our B&F since he took over.

If 5 is your exact expectation, then how did Ferguson exceed your's by not playing a game.

i kinda expected him to be blake mcgrath the second - hang around for a while and never be mentioned in dispatches from sandy. however, i've heard ferguson mentioned multiple times as a real player and one to watch, so that's a fair bit better than i expected in his first year.

Players performed above expectation - J Steven, Milne, Dempster, Peake

To expected level - Dal Santo, Mc Evoy, C Jones, Fisher, Montagna, Schneider, Blake

Below expected level - Riewoldt, Goddard, Gram, Koschitzke, Ray

Players expected to improve but didn't - Gilbert, Polo, Gamble, Clarke, Dawson, Armitage, Geary

The others not given enough opportunity or played enough games to be judged.

That leaves a lot of room for a lot of players on our list to be in the "above expectation or expected level" status for 2012.
