What the hell is going on. Obviously Ross was pissed off and maybe he meant to say their services are no longer required and will be delisted or traded?StevenBaker10 Steven Baker
Thanks for all of the messages of support. I would also like to make it clear that I did not retire.

Bakes was told a few weeks ago, just hadn't accpeted it. He hugged Ross in the rooms. Clubs always try and push them and if they don't go they have to delist them. Ross had faith in him last year and have him massive chance in both GF's. His time had gone though. Decision had to be made. REtirement sounds nicer than delisting, but if the player doesn't accept it this is what happens.plugger66 wrote:Yep but it would be nice if loyal players were told what was happening. The Eddy one is weird as I think most would think he would put himself in the draft.
At leaset all 4 got a big goodbye in front of the whole group. Ross apparently had some nice words about Bakes and Lenny spoke for him also. Hopefully a lap for him and Gards at our first home game next year.

Thats fine I have no problem with that but why say he retired when he didnt. Just tell the world the truth. I know people cant handle the truth but he was delisted.stkildathunda wrote:From all reports Bakes was told weeks ago he wouldnt be getting a new contract and he didnt take that well. It's been going on for years. Just in the past players didn't take to twitter or facebook in protest. We all know bakes was delisted. He was told weeks ago but hasn't accpted it. Ross trying to the right thing. Gave him the big speech in the rooms. It's the right decision for sure, as much as I love him.plugger66 wrote:Thats fine I have no problem with that but why say he retired when he didnt. Just tell the world the truth. Pissed off with the display last night so he takes it out on players who didn't play (and one of whom didn't play AFL this year)? Or were they responsible for the decision to play Dempster up forward and CJ down back?saintspremiers wrote:Ross is pissed off with the gutless effort last night. That is clear.
I hope the players all got a bake.
As for Bakes, pretty poor form of his not to accept the situation a few weeks ago. I thought he was better than that.

Yep they didnt have facebook and twitter back then but they do now so tell us the truth because it will get out anyway and doesnt make us look to professional at all. By the way i have no problem with Bakes being delisted and I also have no problem with him thinking he should go on.saintnick12 wrote:It's been going on for years. When you go, wouldn't you want to go gracefully?
Baker thinks he has another year in him, and either doesn't like Ross, or doesn't like the way the news was delivered.
Look, McQualter "retiring" at 25 is clearly a euphemism when he hasn't got a career-ending injury. But Baker surely knows that he's lost a yard, so to speak, and is in an ageing team in need of regeneration.
Surprising.

Bakes has said that his body is no longer up to it,
so it is somewhat surprising to read his "I didn't retire" message.
Perhaps he is upset that he didn't get a farewell game?

I reckon you're right about this, but panic? We'll see. Due, if not overdue, more like.BigMart wrote:Some fall out

Exactly. Surprised Ross is coping so much flack for this. He has been up front with them. Not a surpise - Bakes was told weeks ago.older saint wrote:Perhaps he wanted to give him the option to say he retired as opposed to not being offered a new contract. More dignity saying retired than psuhed.
Obviously some did not want to take that path
I think the carry on reflects worse on Bakes than on the club

I think the club thought they had done the right thing. Been upfront and honest with Bakes. The retirement line is supposed to be to protect the club favourite from the indignity of having it said that he was delisted after a great career. Always happens. They just usually don't ark up as much as Bakes has. It like when they say Roo is not injured and we all know he is. They say players retire but we all know they are delisted.plugger66 wrote:I still dont understand why he didnt tell the truth because as you point out we have facebook and twitter now.saintnick12 wrote:Exactly. Delisted, retired, who cares?
if the players aren't man enough to know when their time is up, that's their problem.
One thing is for certain, the only constant is the STKFC, players come and go, coaches come and go.
As for kneejerk, WTF? What is kneejerk about getting rid of thse four? Only Gardiner would be worth another run.
They all played in GF's for the Saints, they all deserved to be presented to the playing group as warriors who almost helped us to our second elusive flag.
So as I said, retired, delisted, pfft
