Gilbert's been patchy this year but he's capable of better, and has more than one string to his bow. Don't forget he did a superb job on Judd in round 8.
What gives this rumour weight in my opinion is his involvement in the off-season trouble. All may not be forgiven as has been made out publicly by the players. A successful team needs its players to play for each other and I thought the absence of that was a marked difference between us and the opposition last night.

"... You want to pose a threat to the opposition in as many ways as you can, both defensively and offensively. We've got a responsibility to explore all those possibilities - and we will."

For those interested - the Giants can POACH a maximum of ONE uncontracted player from each club. If they want another player - contracted or uncontracted - they must trade for them. Case in point is Brennan last year - the Suns had already poached Rischitelli, so they had to make a trade for Brennan, despite him being out of contract. Essentially, Brennan could have gone to any club, but clearly chose the Suns for the $$$ offered. The Suns ended up paying a first round pick for him.
As for the U17 draft - or the 'mini draft' - clubs can offer GWS anything they want - players, picks, or a combination of both - GWS then rank the quality of the deals, which subsequently determines the draft order in the mini draft. So hypothetically, if we were to offer them Goddard in the hope of getting the first pick (and subsequently Jaeger O'Meara), but then Hawthorn went and offered something GWS determined as better (e.g. Sam Mitchell & Shoenmakers), we would only get the 2nd pick for BJ. So to an extent, you could be playing a slight risk if you are intending to trade specifically for Jaeger. Many seem to think that you can nominate which player you are 'trading' for - but unfortunately, this is not the case - you are actually trading for draft position, and even that is not guaranteed.
As for Gilbert - if he were to go, we would be compensated depending on his age, b&f rankings and wage (at GWS). Whilst he may not have had his best year in 2011, I'd be surprised if he was not still rated internally, hence the list management team wouldn't be against giving him some reasonable money. Therefore, GWS (if they successfully lured him), would have him on some decent money. This, coupled with him still being relatively young, could potentially see us getting an end of first round draft pick for him - the same as what Adelaide received for Bock, Brisbane for Rischitelli and Hawthorn for Brown. So, were we to lose him, all would not be bad. The interesting thing would be to see what we do with the pick - wait till the super draft next year, use it in the shallow one this year (doubtful), or on-trade it for players...
Hope this clears some of the questions up!
