Good interview from a great Saint! A shame that injury forced him out so early.

Interesting that he rated his era as having better players than the current list.

Very disappointing and somewhat surprising that he sees himself as a Carlton man!
How many games did he play for Carlton compared to Saints?

Thanks. Not much difference.

I think it has alot to do with how he left the club, While I love Ross as our coach we seem to have a lot of disgruntled ex players!

A shame? It was a bloody tragedy! Cost us flags. He plays '04 PF or '05 PF or in 2006, and we win flag No.2 at least. Alas, not to be.

Without doubt, our 2004 team was our best, closely followed by 2005. It just goes to show the quality of our current coach that 2009 and 2010 (even more so) made GFs.

Look he was courageous and good player for us when he would get himself fit BUT he was always very $$ and status driven. Loved the limelight down Brighton way with his mate Warney.

St.Kilda paid him handsomely and his last 3 years were minimal return for the big dollars he was on. He SHOULD be more grateful. Hamill is just as $$ driven now with his pool business he has together with his brother.

Didn't he retire before RL came to the club? I didn't think he was on our list in 2007...

Pretty sure it was Ross's first year But his body was already shot- so in fact he should 'blame' if that's the feeling the previous management and training services-- But so much has been learnt since then.

Aaron "Sammy" Hamill (born 20 August 1977) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who is best known for his time at the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League when he briefly captained the club.

Disagree with that. Surely someone who loves the limelight would be seen or heard in the media regularly. This is the first time I have seen him quoted in years. Might be money driven (who isn't mostly?) but don't think he's a limelight seeker.

Fair enough that he considers himself a bit of both but mostly a blue scum boy as he won a flag with them after all. Still I'd prefer it if he thought of himself as a Saint...that's how I will remember him anyway.

Which flag did he win with Carlton? He started in 1996 I think and definitely didn't play in the 1995 flag. He played in the 1999 Grand Final I think, but he would've had more success at St Kilda.

I dont think there is much to tell. Just didnt really contact any of them pretty much as soon as he finished which was strange considering he lived in an area where most of his Saints mates lived.

His best ' Saints ' Friend would appear to be Warney- Hence my reluctance to accept Warney's rant earlier in the year- as his source was possibly Aaron and he would seem to have uncertain feeelings for Ross.... then of course it was found that Warney wasn't even a member.

Wasn't it his gammy leg that finished his career?

Anyways, in regards to the OP I don't really care. I loved the guy whilst he was here but at the end of the day he came and went rather quickly.

Plenty of great Saints who want to be known as Saints who we can cherish.

My understanding is that Sammy was "encouraged" to retire. Which he didn't want to do, held the hope that he would come good. Which everyone knew was a pipe dream. So didn't leave entirely happy with St Kilda.

He has said this a couple times before on radio.

Perhaps it was just outright honesty, but the way it sounded at time was that he is hoping to be accepted back by them as a carlton man.

Hope they hate his guts after the way he treated those poor blues fans. How dare he s*** on that historically significant number they gave him.

That is exactly right. He had another year of his very lucrative backended contract left in 2008 but as he hardly played any games in 2007 with his degenerative knee condition, a limited 2006 season and issues in 2005 too, he was pushed by Lyon and co to retire in 2008 with a payout of his contract. This freed a spot on the senior list which was the right thing to do so Hamill should have no complaints as he had more than enough time given to him to come good again.
Thanks to his second club he is quite wealthy and if anything, he owes St.Kilda in terms of output on the field relative to money received. He has an exceptional Bayside property portfolio that most people would dream of owning at 33 years old thanks mainly to his 'second' club.

Pretty overrated in my opinion, we all loved how 'hard' he was but these days everyone has a cry when someone is 'picked off' the way he used toâ€¦ that was his main draw cardâ€¦

Had really good presence obviously, mainly cause he was such a scary bastardâ€¦

If he wants to crawl back to Carlton that's fine, I'll remember him as our highest paid player for around 1 goal a game in returnâ€¦

If his knee was any good when Ross stamped his papers he would have returned through another clubâ€¦

Spot on. He took a fair slice of the salary cap for the last 4 of his 5 year backended contract, with very little return. Thomas made some poor and short-sighted decisions that the club paid for dearly by giving some players long contracts when there were worrying signs with their bodies. He gave Hamill a 5 year contract and Luke Penny a 3 year contract. Penny didn't get through his first year.
