Bob Murray(Unbelievable)

Post: # 1131304Post murray 66 »

My wife took myself and the kids to the local pub for a fathers day lunch in Wangaratta when on the big screen in the restaurant I started watching the 71 replay against the Hawks.
I proceeded to start telling my seven year old son about the game and wouldn't you know it ,Bob Murray and his family walked in and were seated right next to us on the next table.
Bob lives in Tarrawingee 10 mins from Wang and taught me in primary school.
I later said to Bob "You can't get away from it Bob" and he went on to tell me that it was that game that wrecked his Knee.
As I was watching the game I would cast my eyes on Bob to see him watching the game and talking with his family.
I got up to leave when I said to Bob I couldn't watch it anymore and he replied by saying great memories mate....
Fantastic man and a wonderful teacher.
I can't help but wonder what was going through his mind when he was watching the replay.

Duffle Coat Days.

In the days of duffle coats I had his name on the back.

Always remember him for his great mark in the 66 GF to save the game.

He taught me in Primary School as well and coached our football team

"Thank goodness that I was part of the premiership team in 1966!"

I remember seeing him almost do something unbelievable whilst playing in a reserves game at Moorabbin.
(Not sure why a champ like him was playing in the two's - I can't remember - perhaps he was coming back from injury?).

Anyway there was a howling northerly.
He did the kick-in after a point.
No-one on the mark so he played on and ran out of the goalsquare.
Then unleashed a massive kick to the Highway end, and with the wind behind it, it landed almost at CHF. The players completely misread it and it bounced to within about 30m of goal before a defender grabbed it.
I suspect that is about as close as any fullback has come to kicking a goal from a kick-in!
