1971 Grand Final

Post: # 1129651Post Little Dozer »

Anyone watching the Footy Show tonight would have seen a grab from a program channel 9 are showing at 12:00pm this Sunday about the brutal clash, Hawthorn v St Kilda.

I wasn't born but my Dad who was 19 at the time was there and still laments the fact we lost what was almost won. I've seen the replay on video and have heard stories so I'll definitely be watching.

I've got to see that. Enough time has passed that it's no longer painful. Looks great.

Last time I saw it I was nine and left in tears at the 27 minute mark of the last.

 yes, once was enough.

But this is a special with interviews from Jeansy, Kennedy, Ditterich, Matthews etc. It looks sensational from the promo they ran ... Hudson copping a clip behind the ears from Cowboy and kicking into Barry Lawrence on the mark. Stewart Trott being fixed up by someone ...

it appears to NOT be the whole game just 1 hour.

Ditto. My standing room ticket landed me amongst Hawthorn supporters and I can still see the glum looks on their faces at 3/4. I was sure it was going to be ours. Then the last qtr unfolded. I can still see the jubilant looks on their faces. It's a recurring nightmare.

Not only did we lose, but it's the only time I can remember Big Carl 'staggering'.

Just before 3 quarter time he was chasing play through the middle when Porter unexpectedly punched him to the head.
Big Carl staggered.

Up until that time I recall he had been a huge influence on why we were leading.
He didn't seem to recover from that blow and the Hawks (via Keddie) overan us.

I was a member of the cheer squad that day and I can still recall the abject disappointment we all felt.

Don't remember much bc only young but remember of course the disappointment.
Also great memories of the courage of Barry Lawrence playing with only one good leg!

Absolute nightmare.

I was in Year 12 and had to face a barrage of Hawthorn supporters on the Monday morning. They were actually pretty good about it.

The very worst aspect was the fact that we thought it was pretty much ours at 3/4 time.

I went to the game with high hopes. Barassi had tipped us, reasoning that Hawthorn couldn't beat us 4 times in one season.

I was there as a young fella- we were doing Ok, but yet again the opposition coach makes a big move that kills us- Keddie goes in the middle for the Hawks and that was the end of us.

My Dad talks about that game a lot as well... he always looks off in the distance with a jaded 400m stare when he brings it up.... He still can't work out how we lost.

Yes, was also there in the standing room area. From memory, a cold wet day not unlike the G.F. against Geelong in 2009.

Think you'll find that Keddie went to Full Forward in the last quarter and kicked 3, maybe 4 goals after we lead by about 20 points at 3/4 time. Keddie had barely touched the ball uptil that last quarter.

Can remember it being a long trip home on the train.

Correct. He was moved to full forward and kicked 4 goals in the last quarter after having had an absolute shocker of a game.

But for those who haven't seen it, if you can bear to watch it do so, if only to see what a fantastic St Kilda team this was. It was one of the greatest we've ever had, with stars on every line.

From memory Gary Colling was on him, and I think went with him in the last quarter to Full Forwrd when he kicked those goals.

Unbelievable that team only made one G.F.

I'm glad this game's being revisited. My oldies always raved about it as one of the best ever but, at least for me, it's always been usurped by other far less interesting games. Having seen video of it and read a lot about it, it's always escaped me why it was left of the 'greatest' lists. Perhaps it's always suffered for it's proximity to Carlton's comeback the year before. AFL history is weird like that. The 1990 GF was really ordinary but because it was the Pies first in a while it's feted as some kind of super game. 89 gets kudos but, really, despite Ablett's heroics, they were never REALLY going to mow down the Hawks after being blown apart. etc etc.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
