I would take both!gringo wrote:Gaff will probably be better than Butcher IMO. Life will get harder for Butcher when he is given more respect. Gaff has heaps of weapons, 50 meter goal kicking mids with incredible ball use sounds like our dream.
However, quality mids seem to come around more often. Decent big forwards, rarely. Thats the difference between Gaff & Butcher and why I would take the latter first.

That's true. but apparently he's used to it, having been at times double teamed, etc, in the U18's and was apparently able to overcome it and still kick bags of goals.gringo wrote:Gaff will probably be better than Butcher IMO. Life will get harder for Butcher when he is given more respect.
He looks to be very much the "real deal", except for his dodgy-looking (albeit presently effective) kicking and his reportedly brilliant forward pressure and tackling is perfect for today's footy.
I'd have no probs paying him a shitload of money, but we would probably have to give up more than we were prepared to, to make the deal happen. I would give it extremely serious consideration, though, especially considering he would instantly add to our side, especially with another pre-season under his belt and in the area we need it most. In fact, if we got him, it would almost be like an immediate mini "rebuild", as we would be able to build our forward line, if not team, around him, for the next 10 years, hopefully. He could immediately solve the problem of what we do to replace Roo and/or Kosi, when they retire. You usually have to have a horrible season to be able to get your hands on someone like him, so I'd be prepared to give up our first pick, plus someone that I otherwise wouldn't want to trade, in order to get him. It could be expensive, but it could very well be worth it.
It goes without saying that Gaff would also be a fantastic pick-up for someone, though.

Butcher may have only played 3 games in the AFL, but it's not like he's just come out of nowhere and could therefore easily be a "flash in the pan". He was someone that was dominating in the U18's for up to 3 years and was genuinely considered good enough to go no. 1, in what turned out to be a terrific draft (Scully, Trengove, Martin, Morabito, Rohan make a hell of a top 6 and Butcher was the first "tall" drafted that day).
Now that he's shown that he's also capable of getting it done in the AFL, especially in such a short time, the risk would be minimal, as far as all that goes. It would be about as risky as backing say Collingwood, against a bottom 10 team, or Black Caviar. ie. They're going to win, unless something goes horribly wrong. So then, as Harry said, it comes down to "are you feeling lucky"?

With your general "can't do", negative attitude, you wouldn't get anyone good, ever, unless they fell in your lap.plugger66 wrote:We will get both for sure. I actually said we would get Schneider and we did. Havent heard about anyone since until I was told we are after Dawes. Apart from Bernard Shakey last year getting Polo and Gamble right I dont think any of these player threads have ever been correct once, not once. It called realistic not negative. I will be happy for you to find just one thread when we have mentioned a player and then got him. And you are right I wouldnt get anyone from another club next year unless we could fluke a star which will not happen unless we trade a star. I would use all our draft picks. Again I cant see anything negative about that.AnythingsPossibleSaints wrote:With your "can't do", negative attitude, you wouldn't get anyone good, ever.plugger66 wrote:We will get both for sure. At least this thread doesn't pretend to be realistic. Gawd, you regularly uphold the view the umpiring is perfect, the AFL is not corrupt and the MRP make sensible decisions, now you come out and pot someone for being unrealistic???plugger66 wrote:I actually said we would get Schneider and we did. isn't dawes studying law? i think i heard this on the footy show. he probably thought he was on to a good thing at collingwood with plenty of mates in need of legal advice but maybe we can swing him our way if we have another fantastic off-seasonplugger66 wrote:I actually said we would get Schneider and we did. Both will come. However, the only sticking point is the Eagles insistence on taking Tony Delaney in return, whilst we are only willing to offer Mark Gale. Could be an interesting compromise.
The Saints are coming!
