There are reasons players like Ray and Polo are released. If they used it like Deledio or Cooney they would still be required players at their original clubs.

I can tell you are impressed :wink:

Hasn't he got a crook hand and the glove protects it?

Apparently helmets give no protection either. Nathan Burke wasted his time for years.

Jb what are you on? The helmet didnt effect Burkey's kicking though. I have it on good authority that he couldnt hear though.

Something affected his kicking, you sure it wasn't his helment?

Maybe Jamie Shanahans glove put him off.

The guy's doing pretty well.

More importantly, he's doing 500% better than anyone on here would have predicted at the start of the year.

Well done Deano; you're having a dip :)

You really have never kicked a ball in anger have you??

Probably not at all....Your right hand is fairly important in the process....and if you have ever worn (be honest now, you havent) you would know the glove makes it difficult to control

You are to footy, what john howard was to cricket....a tragic, with zero ability or knowledge...

Polo broke his thumb
A glove gives absolutely NO structural support.....similar to bike pants giving zero benefit to hamstrings....
Gloves are generally worn after an operation on the thumb, if stitches are still in....to guatd against splitting and infection...

No, i am not a doctor...exercise physiology is my field as you know....but i can ask one if you like, she's sitting across from me...

Question plugger...

Why do key fwds who wear gloves...remove them when having a set shot???

Quinten Lynch, adam Goodes, Travis Cloke????

Just maybe it effects their kicking???

They wear them for window dressing, nothing more...

Were you at the game last night?
Or did you watch it on tv or listen to it on radio?

I have no idea why they wear them. Why are you asking me as you again seem to know the answer. Hasnt Polo only worn it since he hurt his hand?

Are you in a doctors surgery? You have no idea about my footy ability as I have no idea about yours but guess anyway. What that has to do with you guessing about whether the glove helps or not is anyones guess. As for knowledge I will back myself over you any day. That just may put me 1% above zero knowledge. I only wear gloves when I operate. It sounds like you have worn a glove playing footy. Can I ask why if they are a waste of time. Look forward to another ridiculous response.

Im in my lounge room...figure it out genius
I know about the same as most on here...no more, no less......imo

But i believe I have you covered by a fair bit....as most on here do...i consider you to be in bottom percentile when it comes to football intell

Most of your comments are just reactions to others comments/suggestions you have no actual input, a half time hero....

MM....why do you ask if i was at the game.....does that have anything to do with anything???
Either he kicked it poorly or not, and he was wearing a glove or not....

No answers as normal and you think you have me covered on footy knowledge. I will add comedian to your list as well as a person who makes things up to try and prove something. God knows what you are trying to prove though. Anyway the doctors surgery will be shut soon so you can go home.

Just that you seemed to make numerous posts on here last night, whilst the game was on.
I was wondering if you were accessing this site from the game or making your comments without watching it live?

You seem to have an opinion on where players were lining up at centre bounces, how many were in the forward line/back line/defence etc. etc.

Given that the tv coverage doesn't always give you the ability to see the whole ground, I reckon it would be difficult to give an accurate depiction of what was going on, if you weren't actually there to see it.

Does that satisfy you with my reason for asking the simple question of whether you watched tha game live (in person)?

Maybe the boundary umpire blooper video. Obviously not out on the full.

Watching it on TV - on the replay Polo's was definitely a bump ball - not out on the full.

Edit: Polo is more than holding his place in the side at present.....

I think the issue is that our drafters up until last year were doing quite poorly at drafting good kids. It is a bit hard to develop good AFL players from kids when you are not getting good kids.
Polo played well at AFL level in his early career. But ended up playing at Coburg because he turns it over. Which hasn't changed much.

The difference I reckon is that at St Kilda he plays a dumbed down role from what what expected at Richmond. And is probably due to our coaching staff's lowered expectaions compared to his previous employers.

I don't think he has actually developed.
Well from my observation:

* wins more hard ball
* is harder at it
* is more consistent
* is more disciplined

Not claiming he is a star...but from what I can see has been developed into a more valuable player than when he left Richmond.

Having once got 3 votes is a game means squat. Fact was that he was not a consistent player at the Tigers. IMO he is at the Saints.

I would also believe that his handball is underated and unrecognised by many.

As to coaches having lower expectations. I would see it 180 degrees different. Our coaches expectations are higher are higher, and team football is the cornerstone of this. IMO Polo has embraced this and is now the team player he never was.

I had badly sprained my thumb numeous times and it got to the point that whenever I took an overhead mark from a kick with a bit of force it would be quite uncomfortable. Now most gloves are mainly used either for guys who think it helps their marking in the wet or for protecting stitches but I definitely found it much more comfortable to have that bit of support and protection when training which helped prevent more minor sprains. I never did actually wear it during games though as I played in the ruck and never liked directing hitouts with a glove on.

Polo also probably has his hand taped which would make marking and handling the footy more difficult by itself if he wasn't wearing a glove.

fair enough. certainly at the ground there were very few complaining about the decision - looked pretty straightforward, so i have trouble blaming the boundary ump.

He has found "a spot" in the team. That's all he needs to do - play his role.

Always....key word MM.....different thread, we are discussing POLO here...

Last nigjts coverage made a point of illustrating St Kilda fwd structure, to show why we were more efficient with our entries...and the centre square and wings set up is generally easy to see as the cameras is on them at every bounce....

Back to Polo

Why would you not wear a glove in the ruck, did it detract from your feel of the footy when palming???
Most benefits from gloves, shoulder straps, bike shorts, strapping...is mental, to give confidence....rather tha actually doing anything...

After wayne carey donned the shoulder strapping, i should have bought shares in elastoplast....

Riewoldt looked like a mummy in 2008 for half a season...then miraculously got rid of all of it and moved better.....

That's pretty much it. Not an issue when it was wet or dewey but in dry conditions it felt like I had less control over the footy. Was great for training though and I never felt like it had any significant impact on kicking.

He's also kicking a few goals at St Kilda. Not a whole lot, but in 13 games for us he's kicked 6 goals compared to 56 and 11 at Richmond. It's something that helps give him a bit of hurt factor if he can sneak forward and use those long arms to pluck a mark and slot one through every couple of weeks.

I'm still not completely sold on Polo but he's giving a lot more than McQualter or Eddy possibly could. His spot certainly isn't a lock next year though with Lenny back; his inside work won't be needed as much so we might opt for Ledger or Cripps who can give a bit more outside run.
