Positives and Negatives.

Post: # 1119635Post Dan Warna »

this is a game we could have won.

They are complimenting the saints courage.

We lost this for 2 reasons.

1. We turned over the ball a lot and our disposal (except for about 5 players) was rubbish.
2. Part 1 leads to our shooting on goal, 10.10 to 14.5, most importantly 4.7 to 6.1 at half time.

They kicked 4 goals from bad turn overs by us, they scored 3 goals from extreme situations (50m and right on the boundary) and they scored 2 goals from poor discipline from us (bad free's which were unnecessary).

we lost because we failed to kick goals when we had the opportunity and turned the ball over, many of our misses were dead set easy.

Gilberts run and kicking is gone, he was absolutely courageous but his skills were shizen, peake tried hard and created opportunities, but he's out of his league against collingwood, Polo tried hard but again he is out of his league against collingwood.

I would say further that some of our players need to lift significantly.

Positives:
Courage, determination and heart.

Jack steven and ben McEvoy were AWESOME, absolutely good enough to be premiership class players.
Dal santo, Montagna.
Our defensive pressure was first rate, we held their attack brilliantly.
goddard, was first class, dal santo was first class, montagna was first class, gram was brilliant in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
our pressure on collingwood was brutal.

I would say our top 10 > Collingwoods top 10, Collingwoods bottom 12 >> our bottom 12.

Despite what others think the umpires made mistakes but were generally 55/45 in our favour.

I don't know if the coach can teach these guys to kick the footy under pressure.

Pros:

1. Only losing by 19 points against filth
2. Clearances
3. Mac, Steven, Dal and Monty in the middle
4. Roos goal kicking

Cons:

1. Skills / missing easy shots at goal (amateur hour)
2. Roos second half fadeouts
3. Lack of support for Roo up forward
4. Lack of accountability for Leon (he killed us)

Watch him shirk tackles time and time again, watch him bomb it into noone time and time again, watch him bomb handballs to players in danger time and time again. Dont give 2 rats toss bags about his second half, he costs us over all again and again, in the 1st half when the game was up for grabs he was his typical marshmellow self

No bro you are. I said he's been 'good' not 'great.' He was in our best 10 or so tonight IMO.

Contested possessions 131-139... clearances 39-35... respectable numbers...

As Ross said at 3/4 time - we needed to finish better. Had the opportunities to take this one. Trust me when I say Malthouse will be mightily pissed. He'll know it too.

Winning the free kick count doesn't mean the umpires favored us, just as losing it doesn't mean they were against us.

Lots of bad decisions tonight. I would have particularly liked to see Peake shooting for goal from 40m out rather than a free kick to Thomas.

I think the Pies will be thinking: "we got away with this one. Played poorly however still won."

They'll improve significantly next time/if we play them again this year. Definitely need to find something extra. I don't think we can say that hitting our targets and kicking the goals we should will get us the win. Similar game to the Cats game earlier this year (second one). We really should have won it. Need to find something extra next time around.

Peake was fantastic, he was brave, ran himself into the ground and used the ball better that most. The mark in th las qtr was brilliant, ruined by the worst umpiring decision that I have seen in a long while.

12 centre bounce clearances a piece.

We certainly didn't lose tonight because the midfields pants got pulled down.

Clearances overall 39 to 34.

Inside 50's 54 - 48

Ross was right, been burnt by bombing it v Pies before, tonight tried to be too exact = too hesitant.

Agree with most of Dan Warna's sentiments.

For mine the game was lost primarily due to Collingwood's superior class. They were able to kick goals on the fast break due to the inordinate amount of time afforded to Davis.

Furthermore, we butchered our own chances, and our classiest forward in Milne was towelled up. The Polo, Geary, Armitage, Dempster, Clarke and Dawson were shown to be wanting against the best side.

Whereas recently Geary and Clarke have been able to set up plays from defence, tonight they were unable to do so.

Gilbert is battling badly, and will need to re-discover his confidence over the summer. 2011 will end up being a bit of a write-off.

The major positives were the wonderful finishing of Montagna, the ability of McEvoy and Steven to hold their own against a top side, Gram's run and carry (although some of his body efforts were not AFL standard), Dal Santo's consistency, and the games of Ray and Schneider- right up there with both of those two's better games for the season.

Ray is an interesting one. He should do more. Much more. He is a beautiful mark and kick, can win his own footy, and I think when I see his best games, I ask myself why he doesn't play this well more often.

Kosi battled hard around the ground but like the skipper, he wasn't given a chance by poor delivery, and Collingwood's wonderful team defence.

Peakey is a little bit off it against this sort of side, but he worked hard.

BJ had a poor night for mine, didn't get much of it, and had to slot the goal when he got the chance.

Awful decision putting Blake as the sub. You need a runner, and Blake is not one. In addition to this, Ross should've subbed Dawson off, he was being smashed by Cloke.

Fisher played a middling game. Plenty of run, but ruined it with skill errors.

Overall it was gutsy, and I admired that we played it to the death, but we aren't in premiership contention, and it will be a superb effort to move beyond a semi-final.

We weren't too far off, we can and did match them in general play…

A couple of easy misses from Polo and 3 posters didn't help us…

Jones was very cool-handed with the ball,

Great pressure from both sides, their class using the ball forward was probably the difference, can't fault our effort tonight that is for sure.

Very interesting to see that Riewoldt has kicked 23 of his goals this year in the first halves, and only 5 in the second halves,
Is his gut running limiting his capacity to impact games after half time? Not sure how we could change this though? It seems blowing up your opponent doesn't work when they swap backmen on him…

P.S. Maxwell is just so overrated. GOP at very best.

Disappointed that we lost obviouly but really happy with the way our guys went about it tonight. With a bit of luck and better delivery into the forward line, we could have won tonight.

Win, lose or draw I was hoping to come away from tonight's game thinking that if we do come up against them in September (big IF, I know), that we could possibly beat them, and from what I saw tonight, there is no doubt that we could beat them; they definitely are not invincible and we match up pretty well against them.

I suggest you go back and watch the replay, then return with your ridiculous formulaic criticism of Clarke and Dawson. Not good enough?! Some of Clarke's second, third, fourth + efforts in the second and third quarters were positively exceptional. Watch the freakin' replay. Dawson's job on Cloke was fine. None of this shyte was why we burnt the 4 points.
It was the way we used the ball going forward - THAT SIMPLE.

Watch the bloody replay.
