Why Jeans Left St Kilda??

Clearly St Kilda had been in a bit of a rut, but does anyone know the exact circumstances of Yabby's departure in 1976? I wonder how both the Saints and Yabby would have fared had he stayed?

remembering he had been there for more than `16 years
as he coached them for that long and oklayed before that

I think he's more Saint, than Hawk.

The papers ahev been painting him as a Hawks man, but I've always had the impression that he was a Saints man at heart.

Anyone else feel that?

Maybe Yabby had just had enough when he left the Saints. He got the flag in 66, had more finals appearances but we lost the GF in 71 and the 60s era was over for quite a few good players. Probably the club just wasn't run very well and financially couldn't afford to keep or recruit top players.

We ended up paying him something like 22 cents in the dollar of what we owed him.

Has mentored most recent coaches ( maybe not Blighty) but certainly Gt and Ross
I believe I read somewhere that Ross Just saw him recently,
but know that Ross saw him and Jack Barker regulalry.

Some young people on this site won't know that the saints almost 'went under' in the '80s.

There were guys who'd retired and were still owed a few years' salary. Even Jeans was owed money..

There was eventually an agreement where all parties were paid something like 6 cents in the dollar.

Jeansy gave up money owed to him to help save the Saints.

As to why he left...he was over 40 and had been doing the job basically on his own for 16 years. Jeans was a policeman...coaches had day jobs back then!

There was a rumour that when Winmar won a prize (car from memory) for mark of the year the club sold it and gave him an IOU. Don't know if it was true but we have come a long way

I think the car prize recipient was Trevor Barker, not Winmar.

Does anyone remember exactly what year Jeansy went to Hawthorn?
I dont know exactly what job Allan Jeans did in the Police force at the time, but something in special events or similar. he worked pretty close to Mick Millar who was either Chief Comissioner or Assistant Commissioner at the time. Mick was a pretty strong Hawks man I think, and may have influenced Jeansy.

not that I've seen yet But hasn't done his weekly pre game press conf yet.

Trevor would have been the car winner. The really desperate financial times at the club were before Nicky arrived I think.

He left (mainly) because his time was up. I think only four other coaches have had more than 16 years as coach at the one club. Time was eventually called on those as well. I think a contributing reason was that an old problem resurfaced at the club - internal conflict. When at the Junction Oval, it was conflict between the Cricket Club, who owned the ground, and the Football Club, who were merely tenants. The move to Moorabbin solved that, but in the mid 70s, the conflict was between the Football Club and the Social Club. Supreme Court action was threatened. Allan Jeans had seen it all before. I guess after 16 years he decided to move on. Of course, there were the usual stupid idiot supporters (backed by some in the media) calling for a new coach as well.

The club then descended into debt, for two reasons. First, the club had to pay for the building of the stands. Second, our new zones turned out to be mainly duds, although we missed out on a few rather good players by a few streets. I think Leigh Matthews was one. So, we decided to buy from interstate. George Young and Garry Sidebottom were two who could actually play, but there were many others who could not.

In Allan Jeans' time at the club, there was one bounce that went the right way. We seem to have been repaying that bit of luck ever since.

Lindsay Fox put in place a scheme of arrangement whereby those owed money got bugger all in the dollar.The other thing he did was paint the walls in the gym.I remember Tony Jewell saying Fox didn't have a clue, he couldn't understand why Jewell couldn't get them into the finals....

Winmar did win a car for MOTY in 1992.....but didnt have to give it up...

Barks, i believe donated it....or so it was told...
