Fair dinkum sad day. What a football great this bloke was. Legend in every sense. Met him twice and spoke to him on the phone twice. Just in awe of him. Our greatest coach - and he was just as revered at the Hawks. He has mentored our coaches for years - including Rossy. RIP to a another magnificent Saint. Loved our club. we owe him our gratitude.
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

From the Weekly Times of 11/7/11:bergsone wrote:...How did he get that name Yabby?
Asked about his nickname of "Yabbie", Jeans said it was all to do with the locals at Tocumwal.
"My (older) brother Len was "Lobby", short for lobster. One of his mates reckoned I was just a little yabbie, so Yabbie I became."
"25 minutes to make a name for yourself, like you've never made before."
RIP Allan. The man who ended the waiting.

My fondest memory of Allan has nothing to do with football.
He was delivering the eulogy at a funeral for a young man who had committed suicide. He used that moment to reach out to all the young people in the room about the need to speak to someone and to get help if they are feeling down and that it all might be too much.
Afterwards he spoke to plenty of young and old people about all aspects of life. He took a genuine interest in all of them and I'm sure they all benefitted from it.
The kid whose funeral it was happened to be Allan's own grandson. How anyone could possibly speak so eloquently and have so much compassion for strangers after their own grandchild had taken their own life is beyond me.
R.I.P Allan.
Just heard Allan Jean's pre 1989 Grand Final address to the Hawks team, played by Steve Price & Sam Newman on MTR - sensational!
Would be inpirational to play to the Saints before the West Coast game.
I was thinking the same thing. We need to win on Saturday and to have the players hear one of Yabby's speeches can only drive them on to victory.
Would like to see the Saints do something for Alan Jeans besides wear black armbands. RIP Alan Jeans.

If ever there was a moment to rise above the sordid nonsense that kickstarted this year and put aside the sloppy, tired play that's too iften become our 2011 trademark and make a proud statement, now is it. Never been one for 'do it for 'x'' type motivation, but this is different. This bloke is at the top of our tree. Historically vital and, as someone who had the pleasure of meeting him twice, a generous, decent and genuinely thoughtful bloke. RIP.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
