RIP - Ye olde long sleeve guernsey

Post: # 1099647Post Sainternist »

It seems they have well and truly been phased out of the contemporary game. They're obviously impractical for players in that sleeves are an excess part of the garment which can be grabbed hold of in the situation where a player is tackled.

From a fan's perspective, I think it's a bit of shame that you can't purcahase one, as the sleeves add some warmth for a spectator on the cold winter days at the footy.

Anyway, someone put up a Trevor Barker thread which had a youtube link of where it had Barks wearing an old Saints long sleeve with the red cuffs. I, for one, would like it if the club brought them back for the fans.

Also, who were some of the players who liked to done the long sleeves regularly?

Milney was one early on in his career. I seem to recall Criag Devonport wearing them often. Didn't Jeff Dunne always wear one back in the day as well?

Some players still wear them when it's wet.

I worked with Bruce McLennan, a back pocket player who came over from Collingwood to us many years ago, he told me that the only other player at St.Kilda training sessions who ever wore sleeveless jumpers was the Captain, Keith Drinan.

I thought they stopped manufactoring them. I went to buy one at the club last year and they seemed to indicate this was the case.

Is it due to global warming?

Much disappoint.

I think I remember one or two players with short sleeves guernseys when I was a bairn.

Can anyone offer more info?

haha Did Frank Carbone actually wear the long sleeve regularly? I can't remember.

Pretty sure Robbie Elphinstone wore it a few times.

Also seem to recall the schneiderman donning the long-sleeves from time to time.

I remember Schneids and Jack Stevens(I think - or was it Milney) wearing the long sleeves against Geelong last year. I have a 2009 one - love it- more comfortable than having to buy a standard jersey a size or 2 bigger so it can be worn over a hoodie

I can't believe Eddie McGuire and I have the Celtic Football Club in common...he should be a Hun

Yes the extra sheep required to make the sleeves release carbon dioxide in their burbs and farts.

Said Juliar Gillard - "I would be playing for the Bulldogs at full forward but out of respect to the Muslim community I would need to play in a long sleeve jumper, so I declined the opportunity to be drafted by them".

Raph Clarke, on debut, wore a long sleeve candy stripe jumper.

I've got one, but can't remember anyone else ever wearing one???

I even remember Plugger wearing one once in a game at Moorabbin. From memory it was against North Melbourne and he'd had the flu during the week.

Didnt Milney create his own "short sleeved" version a few years ago and get ticked off by the AFL for it?

Trevor Barker...and me (at training)! Long sleeves are great in the wet...like gloves for a chest mark.

I have seen Dawes wear one for the Pies this year, so they're not dead.
