Robert Harvey
"Certainly the best player of the '90s.. all we (North Melbourne) worried about with St Kilda was Robert Harvey. He was just brilliant" - Wayne Carey
This was in todays Herald Sun. Just wanted to posted it here because I hate it when Harves is forgotten in the Buckley/Hird/Voss chat. For those who haven't read it, Carey rated Harves the 3rd best player of the AFL era behing Plugger and Dunstall.

Saw so much of Harves, that it was almost expected that he would be brilliant every week.
Getting towards the end of his brilliant career, his game against Adelaide in Adelaide a few years ago in a Qualifying final (I think), was just outstanding. He dragged the Saints through by sheer willpower. Simply amazing.

Interestingly, the ex-players don't seem to rate Hird and Voss particularly highly. As a spectator, I'd tend to agree about Voss, but who I'd rate behind Harvey and probably no more highly than Hayes and plenty of others. But I was always greatly impressed by Hird.
I have never particularly rated Buckley.
Lockett, Carey and Gablett snr were all awesome IMO: forwards tend to be underrated relative to mids. But Dunstall, though good, was flattered by the tremendous quality of the team he played in front of.
All IMO, of course.

i don't know the exact stats but i would guess average disposals per game are well up over the last few years - yet we rave about 30 possession games.
harvs would regularly get high 30s and 40s at his peak.
wish he'd gone around one last time playing 50% game time - who knows what may have happened?
the best of his type i've seen.

Certainly agree that Lockett was better than Dunstall. Imagine if Dunstall had played for St Kilda and Lockett for Hawthorn, instead of the other way around. I imagine Dunstall would have kicked a lot less goals than Plugger did and that Plugger would have kicked a lot more for Hawthorn than Dunstall did.bigcarl wrote:He rated Dunstall above Lockett.
I reckon Lockett was better than both Dunstall and Carey and I'm sure a few on here will agree.
Dunstall got A-grade, frequent delivery down his throat for most of his career, while Lockett was kicking bags of goals in a relatively ordinary team, playing in a bog at Moorabbin.
I played at FF and I can very safely tell you I'd much rather have played FF for Hawthorn in that time than St Kilda in that time!

Not even comparable. Dunstall was a great player no question. But Lockett was from a different planet. Maybe Carey didnt see many games when he was actually playing. Seriously Plugger was just incredible. We had shocking disposal in the early 90s. Plugger would take on 3 blokes and either mark it or just turn around and kick it himself. He was just that good.
