Positives to take out of R13 match?
Feel free to add to it as well go along, as I think there are positives to be taken out of last night....
- Peake played out of his skin, his speed is incredible and the running he did to get his first goal was brilliant.
- Mac will just get better and better, he is just 22, 6 months older than Z Smith and has just as much upside IMO as the suns player.
- We lost by 4 goals to the undefeated Cats, which shows that if we can be good enough to make it, we can match it with the best if we have our stars fit and firing.
- Yeah, we lost by 4 goals in a relatively low scoring match, but the Cats got 4 very soft frees directly in front of goal which resulted in, you guessed it, 4 goals.
- I didn't feel as though we got beaten by a better side last night. At times it was very ugly, with shocking skill errors by players and runners alike. BUT, we matched it with a team who has not lost this year for most of the night and I never really felt we were out of it. If we can put together a match like we did last night, but fixed up our skill errors we can match it with most.
- Roo, BJ, Joey, Schneids, Gilbert, Milne, Siposs, Lynch, all either didn't play or didn't play to their potential. If they are up and running in September and we finish 8th, I'd hate to be the team who finished 5th!
I know last night was not ideal, but I can see some postives!

Thought we were better then the cats in most facets of the game.
We lost Contested possessions by 2, won clearances, thrashed them in tackles, even had less clangers then them, more marks i50.
Aside from the first 10minutes in the 2nd quarter where they kicked 4 or 5 unanswered goals, and our disposal efficiency.

Can we build a forwardline around him fo the rest of the year?Mr Magic wrote:I thought a positive was that Kosi showed signs that he could well be on his way back to being an imposing threat in our forward line.
Also the positive is that the coaching staff are getting a good idea on who needs to be cleaned out. Was always going to be the case, the bye is a perfect time to develop a plan for the rest of the year.
Peake is a positive, our inside midfield is improvin by the day.

One positive emerging is that our midfield for 2012 is looking quite strong.
Hayes, Dal Santo, Montagna, Steven, Armitage, Goddard, Ledger, Peake and Ray are all players who look like they could be part of an elite midfield group. And with McEvoy's rapid improvement they could soon have one of the best rucks in the competition feeding it to them.
Another positive is that we have two genuine defensive generals in Fisher and Gwilt who just need some players with half decent kicking skills in support to form a good defensive unit.
20 of the 22 players gave it their all last night. I guess that's a positive

I don't think Geelong had a mark in their forward 50 until half way through the second quarter. 4 goals from free kicks for the cats. Jones, Peake, Armo Big Mac all playing good games when we had 2 all aussie mids missing in Lenny and Montagna and Dal down back. Gamble and Kosi the only forwards that looked like they were at the ground and we still were in the match. We convert a couple of goals from the set ups we made and we could have easily run away with it.

DID ANYONE SEE SCHENIDS GETTING SACKTAPPED? I saw him on the ground and then limping, trying to get into the 50 and compete, good effort!Junction Oval wrote:Positives :
1) the 110% effort put in by all (except perhaps Schneids).
2) confirmation that we need to improve our Kicking Skills FFS.
I thought Kosi showed some better signs, guttered if he gets suspended over his tackle.
Sorry if anyone's mentioned it but I thought our team played well despite the lack of star power from BJ, Joey and Roo. Dal and Fisher played well again and I really think Fisher must be considered as elite.

- One of the few games this year where Saints won the clearances - by 2 I think
- Contested poss, was only 2 the difference
- Koschitzke taking some marks and looking ok
- Won the tackle count

PROS & CONS
PRO's
Most of team effort was good with equivalent skills would have WON !
Jack STEVENS & ARMITAGE continue to improve
McEVOY beat OTTENS & VARDY basically on his own
JONES returned to form (what a shame he cant kick)
KOSI showed a little - although didn't earn his spot
GAMBLE tried hard and did Ok
Quick handball is getting players moving forward
Won centre clearances
Won tackle count
Time for RL to rejig forward line and movement in !
CON's
Extremely poor kicking skills - RAY, GRAM & GILBERT killed us !
Dumb defensive efforts cost at least = 4 goals
Terrible delivery to forward lline
When we did run it into the forward line we couldnt hit a target
No forward crumbers at front and centre
Too many defensive players flyinng for marks & punch forward to opponents
MONTAGNA should not have played - playing injured players again poor!
GRAM, MILNE & SCHNEIDER very soft effort. Time for a shake up!
Too many poorly skilled players....

SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!
and our next six are against:perfectionist wrote:It's round 13 and not round 24. We are still just one game out of the eight, and those other teams fighting for the last twp possies are doing their best to keep us in the hunt.
north (11th) at home
port (16th) away
west coast (5th) at home
adelaide (14th) at home
gold coast (17th) away
fremantle (7th) at home
if we're any good we should win five of those and then be sitting about seventh.

No we were in the match and lost it through our poor skills, otherwise we had endeavour just not execution. The cats hadn't kicked a goal from a mark until half way through the match, we defended but couldn't kick goals when it went forward, geelong had to manufacture them too. So technically we were entitled to think we were successful in parts of the game but fell down in the forward line coupled with silly turn overs allowing them to get on top.
