Buckley
When asked tonight on Footy Classified to rate in order Hird,Riccuito and Voss,he said none of them. He had Harvey one.
Said he learnt more about about the game watching Harves than any other player. He said when he was 17 and met Harves he said he wanted to be him,and in 2008 retired in the commentary box 20 years later he still wanted to be Harves as he was still out there.
Great little talk he gave on our forgotten number 35

Nathan Buckley has always been a huge fan of Harves: I've heard him go on before about his man crush on our former #35.
I thought Bucks was a little bit overrated as a player - not in the same bracket as Hird, Voss or Harves in my book. But the bloke has always had a first rate football brain: he showed it as a player, he showed it as a commentator, and is now demonstrating it in his low key, quite self-effacing way as Malthouse's sidekick (but how much of the Pies' improvement is actually NB's doing? Quite a bit, I reckon).
We might want to call him figjam in jest, but he's always seemed like quite a good bloke to me.
But, if I keep this up any longer, the thread will get moved to the Opposition Forum.

i vaguelly remember there being rumours of buckley coming to st.kilda. anyway, i think we already had our cap pretty close to the brim at that stage with the likes of lockett, loewe, harvey, winmar etc...Dr Spaceman wrote:If he loved Harves so much, why didn't he tell Brisbane that they had to trade him to the Saints?

He was never going anywhere but Collingwood. Spent the minimum time possible elsewhere.Sainternist wrote:i vaguelly remember there being rumours of buckley coming to st.kilda. anyway, i think we already had our cap pretty close to the brim at that stage with the likes of lockett, loewe, harvey, winmar etc...Dr Spaceman wrote:If he loved Harves so much, why didn't he tell Brisbane that they had to trade him to the Saints?

Only difference seems to be that Nathan is taking over a better side then Shaw had and has done a lot of tactical training. While he may send them into the wilderness one day, seems he has a dream time to enter into the football arena as a coach.Sainternist wrote:I can't wait for Nathan Buckley to take over the coaching reigns from Malthouse.
It will take The Filth into the football wilderness ala Tony Shaw.
It always amazed me how Robert Harvey was always forgotten in the Vss/Hird/Buckley arguments. I get that all 3 of them were the modern day stars, and such but Harvey was still a star at his age. So it was refreshing that someone actually took the time to acknowledge Harvey.

I watched the programme this week and thought it was one of the better ones. I must admit that I thought Buckley handled himself extremely well, although it was hardly an "inquisition" I believe he will ultimately make a better coach than either Voss or Hird (given the fact that he is inheriting a fantastic list and one of the most cashed-up football departments in AFL history) Buckley was one of the best players of his era and I'm always happy to be able to say I saw him playing at his best. The tribute to Harves seemed heartfelt and genuine and although I hope he fails when they play us, I've a feeling that He'll make it as a first class coach.
St Kilda forever ( God help me)

wasn't there much debate at the time about how he was virtually promised to the pies- or would only go to the Bears as long it would be 1 year and he then went to the pies.Bernard Shakey wrote:He was never going anywhere but Collingwood. My point is, if he met Harves when he was a 17 year old in Darwin and he became his favorite player, why didn't he insist on being traded to the Saints rather than the Pies?
