Just caught up on this Goddard idea.

If GWS offered us that, I'd take it.

It would arm us with four gun kids. Three of whom should make it, one of whom might be a star.

It's not a bad risk, especially when BJ is no longer 18 himself.

I'd hate to see him go, but he then offers us a legacy that keeps giving.

Having said that, Goddard just said he wants to be a Saint "forever", which is equally wonderful, and the kind of loyalty money can't buy.

Either, BJ will always have my vote as a great servant of this club.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Goddard should be retained for as long as he will stay.He sets a standard for guys to aspire to, he has the players around him walking taller and is first in to remonstrate. If we are rebuilding, guys like Goddard are who you want running along side the newbies.

Melbourne has all the young talent they could want but no real leadership, guys like Roo and Goddard set an incredible example for team mates and will fast track young talent.

There is definitely a good case for rolling the dice but when you know you have 2 aces you don't through them away hoping you get something better.

No player agent worth his salt should/would allow his 'stars' to sign past the end of 2012.

Free Agency comes in in 2013 and whilst the PA are negotiaiting a new overall pay scale with the AFL how could anybody expect an agent to allow his client to sign away their rights without knowing what might be available in 18 months time?

How many do you need setting the example, though, if we do end up doing a major rebuild? I see what you're saying re Melbourne, but I think they just went too far, especially delisting McDonald.
We would still have the likes of Hayes and plenty more with lots of experience, if we let one of our major "guns" go. We would have to lose about 5 of them to be in the sort of position Melbourne are in and I don't think anyone's suggesting we trade that many.
If you could trade one and get three potential "young guns" in return, to build your next premiership tilt around, you'd be wise to give it serious consideration. The ones we draft would then have the likes of Hayes, Fisher, and all bar one of Goddard, Roo, Dal Santo, Montagna, etc, to "set the example". That would be plenty.

YOU GET WHAT YOU SETTLE FOR.

I think it's safe to say that 100% they're getting a new agent, along with Gilbert.

Seriously though, most better players are only signing short term contracts atm until the dust settles on the new CBA and Free Agency agreements are known.

you don't willingly trade one of the best players in the afl - loyalty aside, (and it'ss not something that should be put aside), what are the odds of getting another gun with two first round picks? who knows if we'd end up with a goddard, a kosi, a clarke, or a brooks?

Good words from Goddard in the media.

I do hope he means then, but he seems like such a straight down the line bloke, the way he talks, deals with the press and plays footy.

I'm glad we have people like him and Roo at the club.
