Watching this game yesterday gives me a greater appreciation for the level of frustration that Ross must be experiencing.

Players like Eddy and McQualter were very good. Their effort, even at Sandringham, is unquesitonable. They give every contest their all and apply pressure to the ball carrier forcing errors. But they are playing at the maximum of their talent. They don't have the silky skills of a Dal Santo or Goddard. So they are not going to improve.

Then you have blokes like Gram. His effort was non-existent yesterday. It genuinely looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but playing footy on a chilly afternoon in downtown Werribee. Someone of his talent should be the player that everyone looks for especially transitioning from defence to attack. Gram played on the ball all day and I reckon that he would have been lucky to have 20 possessions. What he did with the ball (when he got it) was patchy at best. Some nice work would be followed by a sloppy disposal resulting in a turn-over. It was saddening watching this man waste his talent by a lack of work rate.

Legder looks like a genuine goer...Sometimes he gets ahead of himself but it's hard to go crook at someone that goes in and gets the ball and then tries to create something with a bit of a run. Could come in this week as a sub.

Raph Clarke played very well...but, as usual, had a slowish start and worked his way into the game to be one of the best on ground. I hope that Ross has learned his lesson and never plays him as a sub ever again. He is not an impact player.

Tommy Walsh also played pretty well...He is a big boy and holds his ground very well.

The Zebras addressed the situation and decided to regroup, closing down the gaps through the midfield. The leadership of James Magner, Adam McQualter, Rob Eddy, Chris Irving, Raph Clarke and Tom Simpkin (who played exceptionally well.) put the brakes on Werribee’s free flowing football and we answered with 5 of our own goals. The pressure that we applied from the 15 minute mark of that second term became the trademark for the rest of the game. The need for this style of football was reinforced at the long break as the Coach Brett Lovett let all the players know the importance of adhering to the team rules and the game plan.

A number of positional moves were made and our third term was the most productive for the year. Raph Clarke, Ryan Gamble, Tom Walsh, Jason Gram and Tom Simpkin all found themselves heavily involved in this term as we began to share the goals amongst the midfield and forwards. Mick Lourey kicking five in another very good performance. James Magner, Ricky Ferraro, Chris Irving, and Tom Ledger not only kicked goals, but their work rate without the ball created opportunities for their team mates.
However, what was most impressive was the willingness of players to use the right options as we moved the quickly into our forward 50. Our efficiency improved markedly as we created targets and were able to move the ball swiftly forward. The performance of Darcy Brown in his first senior game was a real positive for the club. Elevated from our TAC alligned side Sandringham Dragons, he appeared very comfortable with the added pressure of Senior VFL football and contributed a great deal in his cameo appearances on the ground.

It sounds to me as if both Raph and McQualter had good games. Which is not surprising at all: despite the endless rubbishing they both get on this forum, they are both fringe AFL players and therefore a cut above most VFL footballers.

Raph has played some outstanding games in major matches: eg, the 2009 PF.

People seem to keep putting Mini in the same category as Eddy and Geary, but his kicking and handball skills are a cut above theirs. I don't know why he wasn't able to carry on with his 2009 sort of form, but he wasn't and he really hasn't been done a favour by being kept in the team throughout 2010 rather than being sent back to the Zebras to get his act together.

I know I am in a minority, but I wouldn't entirely write these two off yet as AFL footballers: or Gram for that matter. It's wonderful to see the likes of Siposs and Winmar getting a game (and perhaps Walsh and Ledger soon), but these young guys often have trouble maintaining a consistent standard of performance at the AFL level. So it's good to have the likes of McQualter and Raph as backup.

And, really, Raph should be a much better and more consistent performer than he has been. Crying shame IMO.

This is pretty funny, the younger guys can't maintain consistency, but McQualter and Raph can?

While I agree that McQualter might not be done, the fact is that he has been selected for over 20 games straight where he hasn't added much to the side… Consistent he has been - consistently awful…

Raph - Ross likened him to "the girl with curl" for a reason - he is not consistently able to perform at AFL level.

well done Tom C
Some of the better performances of the day came from Saints Rookie Tom Curren who continues to impress with his damaging use of the ball and super impressive work rate, he found the footy 24 times, had 12 Ball gets, 8 Handball Receives and kicked 3 of the teams 8 goals to be clearly best on the ground

These are apparently the stats from yesterday's game, plus some comments on Ledger ("Square") from Squizzy (who gives detailed reports on Sandy games most weeks) on BigFooty:

Reply (Squizzy1970):
There were so many good players it would have been hard to pick 6 (Magner had 30p and 3 goals, Irving 21, Lourey 5 goals, Ferraro 3 goals).

For the Saints:
Eddy - 33p, 5 tackles
McQualter - 30p
Simpkin - 28p (21 kicks), 12 marks (4 contested)
Ledger - 28p and 1 goal 2
Gamble - 23p, 3 tackles
Clarke - 21p
Gram - 20p, 3 tackles
Andreoli - 20p
Heyne - 18p, 4 tackles
Walsh - 17p, 5 hitouts, 2 behinds (one just missed from 50m).
Johnson - 8 marks and 2 goals

Square (Ledger) played in the guts as an extractor (Irving, who is normally in the middle, seemed to lurk with intent at half forward quite a bit - to good effect).

Had 10 possessions in the third quarter to help set the game up. Given he was getting alot of first possessions, he possibly could have snuck into the best (wasn't relying on the good play of others to get a kick).

If he is fully fit, he must be some sort of chance.

Not bad from Rob first game back- wearing the arm guard.

Certainly was. If he improves his disposal and decision making under pressure he could perhaps replace Baker once he goes.

+1. He'll be playing very good footy for Sandy seniors, clearly is good enough.
