let me try that againstinger wrote:he won a best and fairest at hawthorn....and is still playing good footy today at 33 years of age....skeptic wrote:Also have to remember that the Saints finished in the GF with a team full of midfield stars in Harvey, Burke, Winmar, Jones, Brown, Lappin etc etc
would have been hard pressed to get back into that midfield... Hawthorn were struggling at the time
as a young kid coming off a serious career threatening injury, he would have felt hard pressed to break back into the saints midfield at the time.
hence he went to a weaker team (at the time)

St Lenny wrote:Joel Smith told me that the St Kilda medicos were not confident he would play again. Saints offered him a one year contract, he didnt want to leave according to him. As I said earlier his father was his manager and got him a better contract at Hawthorn.
i would accept what you have said as the truth.....i remember his father being involved....

Reminds me of the complaint that an injured Nicky Winmar made when he was left alone at VFL Park and had to find a taxi and make his own way to hospital.SaintWodonga wrote:It was also reported at the time that no one from St kilda visited him in hospital and he felt not wanted, not one official or team mate!
The club just poo hooed his complaint.

I don't hate either of them.Sainternist wrote:okay, so we've established joel was a mercenary.

Both made decisions that they obviously felt were the best option for themselves.
But IIRC Smith (or his people) never bagged the Saints and/or the coach on his way out.
