Broke Davey early, but Davey is about as determined as wet tissue.
A scalp's a scalp, but let's place it in its correct context.
Jones busted his butt with effort today. He and Peake set a standard for hard run. Commendable.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

I think fans have really unrealistic expectations of what is achievable. There are a few players in the 700 odd afl players that hardly ever make a mistake, but some are unfairly maligned. A mythology springs up, usually because of elite performances, and people look past their failings. Other guys who are consistent performers get labelled and their deficiencies are watched for. Jones has a bad game and is gone - Hodge has a shocker and he must be injured.

How many bad games does Hodge have compared to CJ?gringo wrote:I think fans have really unrealistic expectations of what is achievable. Sorry that is a dumb question, why would you even mention Hodge and CJ in the same sentence?

His great attribute is his running.
But boy he does some strange things as mentioned. Has possession, could go the penetrating long kick into the forward line but doubts himself, and goes for the squibbly backwards handball to a man who's about to be cleaned up.
Culd slot through a goal, but chips 8.5 meters to someone on an angle with an opponent hot on their tail.
But can run and plays with great vigor.
Missing the brain of a footballer though. The athlete syndrome that plagues the competition these days.

His games this year have been a shadow of who he was - no confidence whatsoever. However, a great turnaround over the past two weeks - much harder running and kicking long for a change.
In past weeks, he has only wanted to handaball and/or short kicks backwards. We know that he can't kick well, but it has been good to see him breaking the lines and kicking long.

Also the fact that his kicking style looks pretty bad makes you percieve it as a bad kick even though it hits his team mate on the chestMunga wrote:pfft Clint probably hit more targets than most, it's just when he miss kicks they miss by a lot

People have to understand that not every player can be a good kick. The team currently probably has too many bad kicks, however all teams can afford a few bad kicks in the side. I definitely have Jones in the starting 21.
Have a look at Collingwood. Cloke, Wellingham, Ball and a few others are pretty poor kicks. You can't expect 21 good/great kicks in the team.

There are two totally different ways of looking at CJ's game today. Firstly, he totally destroyed Davey, ran off him into space, busted a gut, etc, etc.
Great, terrific, etc, etc.
Secondly - leaving aside what the stats keepers define as an "effective" disposal - CJ was absolutely hopeless when he had the ball in his hand: almost every handball he made was a looping sort of thing to a player under more pressure than him, and virtuallyevery kick was either directly to an opponent or off into nowhere in particular.
Opposing teams worked CJ out 18 months ago. They make no attempt to stop him getting the ball and will even kick to contests in which he's involved. CJ with ball in hand is no sort of threat whatsoever.
I love the guy's bravery, hard running and all round effort. But I'm not sure we really want him in our team going forward.
Hard call, I know, but if we are going to make the hard calls on McQualter, Gram, Kosi, Raph, Baker, etc at the end of the season, CJ has to be in the mix.
