I say promote him ASAP. I think he's at least ready for a taste. I just hope he hasn't been turned into a defensive, chip it around the back, Blake-like robot. From what I've seen he has vice like hands, kicks with great efficiency and is strong in the contest. Has some speed for a big guy too. Throw him in and see what he can do!
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

how long does Tommy grind away at Sandringham before he becomes disheartened and turns his back on the AFL ? If we cant win a game, promote the kid and at least give him a run in the seniors before seasons end to give him a taste of whats required. Cant do any harm.

How much money would we have invested in him to get him to the stage he is now?
We either promote him, or cut our losses and ship him back to Ireland. Must be soul-destroying for him to be still running around in a second level competition.
Australia...... Live it like we stole it....... Because we did.

Someone can be promoted immediately for Lenny Hayes unless this has been done already. (I may hve missed it while overseas).borderbarry wrote:Is it still the situation where a club can promote a rookie mid season? Maybe this is what is going on.
Then their is the option at mid year as well.

Didn't he come 7th in the B&F at Sandringham last year? Would every "good paddock footballer" do that, in their first year playing a brand new sport? I think not.spert wrote:Good paddock footballer -nowhere near senior level.
Nor would they look as comfortable and at-home as he did in the NAB Cup this year, I don't believe.
YOU GET WHAT YOU SETTLE FOR.
i agree...i saw enough to suggest that he will be a whole lot better than zac..AlpineStars wrote:I thought he was very good in the Nab cup, did we add a rookie after the long term injury to Lenny? I would play him.
.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will

He is where near Zac at the moment. Maybe you should get to a few Sandy games.stinger wrote:i agree...i saw enough to suggest that he will be a whole lot better than zac..AlpineStars wrote:I thought he was very good in the Nab cup, did we add a rookie after the long term injury to Lenny? The level he's playing in at the moment is about the same as he was in Ireland and he's getting paid. Why would he want to leave?GrumpyOne wrote:Agreed.Zed wrote:how long does Tommy grind away at Sandringham before he becomes disheartened and turns his back on the AFL ? What would he be on? 50k.... He's rookied this year. So maybe, lets be generous, 120k over the last couple of years, including medical etc.... And if we promote him, he gets paid a lot more......GrumpyOne wrote:Agreed.Zed wrote:how long does Tommy grind away at Sandringham before he becomes disheartened and turns his back on the AFL ? If he doesnt break through by the end of this year, then there would be a pretty good chance they would let him go.
Still has a couple of months though.
Oh, and what would be more soul destroying? Playing reserves while you learn the game and get some more confidence? Or being promoted and getting your arse handed to you by some fringe player with 20 senior games under his belt?

I would love him to do well and kill in the seniors, but he looks like the typical "good VFL footballer" to me. If there was a way that he could get elevated, then he must at least be given a chance in the seniors, though I would much rather see him in the midfield or forward line for extra strength he may add.villasaint wrote:i simply cannot understand any negativity towards Walsh. He will get games this year no doubt and will be a decent player for us barring injuries.

"If he was to look back in 15/20 years at his time in Australia, what would he like to have achieved?

That’s why I came out here, I didn’t want to be sitting at home in 10 years time saying I could’ve gone, I could’ve been an AFL player… I know now, whether it happens or not, I can say that I gave it my best shot and that it either worked out or it didn’t…there’s a long way to go yet though.â€
