IF you had to make a big trade...
Terry Wallace article last week was interesting, should we look at a big name trade to get an early pick or a 17 year old gun GWS already have?.
If so who and realistically what would you get for them.
Please no Eddy and McQualter for pick 1!
Kosi and Gram and our first pick ( may be around 12) for a top 5 pick or an equivalent player already selected.
GWS will need size and Kosi can provide this. Gram is havinga good season and will never have more trade value than now.
Player they select needs to have good speed and excellent foot skills.

As I said at the time, I left the second Grand Final last year absolutely convinced that we had to do a pretty significant re-build, there and then. That that group would be mentally scarred from all the lost opportunities and that they would find it incredibly hard to get themselves up for another crack at it this year.
I was extremely disappointed when we did basically no trading whatsoever, as it was a golden opportunity to try to get some of Gold Coast's top 10 draft picks, while our guys still had some real "currency". Even if it cost us a Dal Santo, or someone like that. I felt we just had to make changes.
Unfortunately it seems that this group is completely shot and extremely fragile and we of course missed the opportunity to gets some "A-grade young guns" last year.
We'll be in less of a good bargaining position this year, especially if we just completely fall apart and become a rabble. One, because they'll probably be seen as "damaged goods" and secondly because they'll be a year older.
Last year the only older ones I wouldn't have put on the table would have been Hayes and Goddard and it would probably be about the same this year.

The only guys you could hope to trade for a high draft pick are
Riewoldt
BJ
Dal
Joey
The first 2 would get you a top 5 pick, the other two probably only a top 12 or so.
If McEvoy starts to win some ruck contests, you perhaps could trade him for a first round pick.
Perhaps Gwilt and Fisher as a package might get you a top ten pick.
As for the rest, even in package deals, the answer would be "tell them they're dreaming".

We should look at getting some ones second ruck like collingwood did. High price on their head and letting them slip to us in the preseason. as a replacement for Lenny, Bate from melbourne is sitting on the sidelines because they are playing youth, and other clubs have those guys that are sitting in the reserves due to an abundance of youth. Keep our high picks, delete the trash, build our weaknesses and we go again. Culling lists in a fire sale does nothing. You don't want to do a Brissie where you have a fleet of injury prone has beens but if you shop carefully there are some gems wasted at other clubs. The new teams don't want them because they want big scalp recruits as brand builders.

The writing was on the wall after the second GF and what's happened so far this year is the sort of thing that was always likely to happen. We hoped it wouldn't, once it was clear they weren't going to make any significant changes, but it was always likely.
Ross may have been seriously on the money when he said he may be in denial, a few weeks ago. He may have had his head deep down in the sand.
After missing two GOLDEN opportunities to win premierships with this group, the likelihood of having another one was massively remote, with all the added mental baggage/scarring they'd have.

I don't recall watching Bate play. Is he a "master"?gringo wrote:We should look at getting some ones second ruck like collingwood did. Roo would be my trade.
Now this wont happen I dont think so realistically it would be Armo. We get Lenny back next season, and with the trade pick (or picks) we get the best in and under mid we can draft.

I agree. He's a terrible kick for goal, not good below the knees and doesn't hold his feet. It won't happen because it would fragment the team.joffaboy wrote:Roo would be my trade.

Isn't that the same sort of reason given for why Grant Thomas shouldn't have been sacked from the club, because he was so close to them and it would affect the morale of the group?
They got over that and have made 3 prelims and 3 GF's since and they'd also get over losing Roo. It may take a while, but it would be a rebuilding period anyway, so they wouldn't be expected to do well for a fair while.

Do you honestly think we're going to be a serious Premiership threat again while Roo is still playing? He'll be 29 next year.
Unless I'm mistaken, a club isn't supposed to be about individuals. Although ours always seems to be, which may be exactly why we don't win Premierships.

So you guys are basically saying that we should trade one of the best players in the comp because our coaching staff can't work out a sensible way of using him and/or we don't have enough other dangerous forward targets to support him.
Thank goodness none of you (AFAIK) run the club...

The question was totally hypothetical.
Everyone thought it would be the end when Plugger left and it wasn't - in fact the dp's we got helped us into the 1997 GF.
Everyone thought it was the end when Harv's retired. Well we thn made GF's in 2009 and 2010.
How is Geelong going without GA?
It wont happen but the advantages can be seen in a trade like that.
Lance or James??

yeah so lets offer the capt and best and fairest multiple time winner, our best marker, hardest worker and prob going to be a player that finishes in our best top 5 players ever...up for trade
...to then prob balls up the trade or draft pick up anyway
lets emotionally completely f*** with everyone elses head after also missing a season with our most inspirational player.
seriously i cannot believe people would say lets offer roo up for trade.
each to their own
but to me thats unreal craziness
and yes joff, the benefits are there to see, but it wont happen i dont think

I am looking at value for trade in context with the OP question.meher baba wrote:So you guys are basically saying that we should trade one of the best players in the comp because our coaching staff can't work out a sensible way of using him and/or we don't have enough other dangerous forward targets to support him.

Roo is the only one with real currency, followed by bj, then possibly Dal and maybe Sam Fisher.
Lance or James??

Thats not the point of this thread. I am certainly not advocating we actually trade Roo. This was just an objective look at out trading capital.
Unfortunately it shows the sparsety of trade options we have.
And I DO thin Roo will still be in the team when we have a shot at a flag in 2012 or 2013, he is only 28 ATM, why cant he play for another FIVE year (batrring injury).
Lance or James??

No, because this group look to be done and if so (and it's not over yet) our "Premiership window" will have almost certainly closed and isn't likely to be "open" again for a fair while, by which time Roo will probably have retired.meher baba wrote:So you guys are basically saying that we should trade one of the best players in the comp because our coaching staff can't work out a sensible way of using him and/or we don't have enough other dangerous forward targets to support him.
And because this is looking like the time we'll badly need some very early draft picks and with GWS coming in, the only way to get them is going to be to trade a "big name" or two.
If you don't have the guts to do that, you're looking at years down the bottom of the ladder.
YOU GET WHAT YOU SETTLE FOR.
Trade away a Kozi and high draft pick for a Clark at Brissie, we need another ruckman. Suggestions that we trade away McEvoy for a kid are ridiculous, as annoying as he seems to be to everyone - he is a 21/22 year old shouldering the ruckload almost all game.
Last two weeks he's been smashed, but he's been smashed by ruck combo's. First Clark/Leun/Broc, then Jacobs/McKernan. Lets get rid of him and play who, Stanley in the ruck?! Of all players I think he'd be one we HAVE to keep for the future of our club.
Someone like Gilbert, or Kozi, almost are the only players we could trade.
Definitely NO to Armo, would be a disaster to lose him - considering what he's done since Lenny went down, imagine life with no Lenny or Armo.
I said it last year, but our constant topping up of our list with other clubs' rejects is hurting us and our list. Polo, Patterson, Lovett, Smith, Peake, Gamble and Eddy (keeping in mind we begged Gardi to stay when he knew himself I'd say that his body couldn't go around again) - in just two years these guys all took spots that kids could have and none of which are playing which you would want - if they are 'recycled', they can't be developing or plodding around in the twos. I don't usually make stupid out there statements but has Ross really got hold of it all still? Players are disjointed, Ross doesn't seem to care, all the assistants jumped ship last year, I want to play kids but they just aren't good enough. At the end of this year, we need to trade hard, and get rid of at least 10 list cloggers, if we HAVe to go recycled, lets get a big name with no skeletons in the closet.
Too many players are either one sided, or simply, as in Sammy G's case, no-sided.
Adelaide could not have tried harder to let us win last night and we simply weren't good enough.
