RUCK
tonight we obviously used Blake as the back up ruckman, personally I don't like him in the team I think he is suspect.
Could we use Riewoldt as the back up ruckman.
I know alot of you are old school and disagree with any ideas that move Riewoldt away from CHF but if we are all honest. He is giving us donuts at the moment. Maybe a swing into the ruck to roam the ground could bring new life to him. Not to mention the idea of a slow lumbering ruckman trying to catch Riewoldt amuses me

What and get our 800k a year captain who has never played in the ruck before jumped into and slaughtered?
Blake's not our problem - hate to say it Big Macca is. He simply can't win his share of tap outs. I reckon as things stand at the moment he would be the worst starting ruckman in the league. OUr mids were slaughtered in the first half, and we simply couldn't get near the ball from the stoppages. He was up against a young, raw ruckman like himself and to be honest, I expected a lot more from him.

you have watched stanley ruck havent you?? guy jumps about 3m away from where the ball is bounced.. then stares around til the next contest wondering why he didnt feel a contest... or a ball or anythingOne Eyed Saint wrote:When fit Stanley has to be a backup option.
Let's hope MG comes back very soon, otherwise this must be a priority in trade week..
No point drafting a kid (eg Macca) as they take too long to develop
nah fair point. lets leave out $800k captain at CHF when he is being triple teamed and getting slaughtered anywayMoods wrote:What and get our 800k a year captain who has never played in the ruck before jumped into and slaughtered?

I'd play him anywhere BUT the ruck. If you want to free him up put him on the wing. Considering our whole structure is based around Roo, it would need some rejigging though. Johnson showed tonight he's a fair way off holding down CHF. Roo has played there successfully for 10 years and I can't see the reason in panicjing and doing something as radical as throwing him into the ruck.saintjake wrote:nah fair point. lets leave out $800k captain at CHF when he is being triple teamed and getting slaughtered anywayMoods wrote:What and get our 800k a year captain who has never played in the ruck before jumped into and slaughtered?

Johnson in his little bit of time tonight showed that he offers more then Kosi does.Moods wrote:I'd play him anywhere BUT the ruck. If you want to free him up put him on the wing. And its not a radical move. Its thinking outside the box.
How can we free up our best forward thats triple teamed everyweek?
Hmmm put him in the Ruck, when it hits the ground we have three Midfielders.
He will push back and take marks floating across.
get touches through the middle because the other ruckman wont be able to keep up and will drift forward WITHOUT THREE F**KING PLAYERS hanging off him and kick a few.
sounds like a dream to me

If Kosi manages to get fit then he should share half the ruck duties with McEvoy. It won't be a combo that wins us 50 hitouts a game but if they can get 30 between them as well as 30 touches, 10 marks an a couple of goals then that's a fair (and realistic) result.
Ruck is the number one priority in trade week. Someone need to get in McIntosh's ear soon

Personally I think the decision to delist Pattison was premature. He showed a bit last year and would at least be of some back-up value. Could have taken him as a rookie. We lost three rucks last year (King, Pattison and McGrath) and drafted none. We knew we were gambling on Gardi and Kosi getting through the season injury-free with their frail bodies. McEvoy is a long way off it and he is having to cop 80% of the load! Imagine if the sub rule hadn't been brought in

Rixy was useless around the ground. Utterly useless.yallingup saints wrote:when was the last time you saw one of our rucks put a knee in someone's head?
At least rixy gets off the ground.

And he was just as good at actually winning a hitout. Picture McQualter's ruck skills with Trent Knobel's footy smarts. Tried his guys out but was just awfuldcstkfc wrote:Rixy was useless around the ground. My god we miss MG. He was part of a great midfield in 09 that included Lenny and the traitor. We won hit outs, clearances and contested possessions largely because of those three. We were a powerhouse because of them.
The forward line actually hasn't changed that much since 09, but it's now inept because the ball is coming in too slow. The backline is also largely the same, but it's now inept because the ball is coming in too fast.
We've got to stop changing the forward and back lines expecting things to turn around when we're getting flogged in the middle.
We must get first use of the pill for starters. We move improve our work at the stoppages. I'd start by playing our best players on the ball as much as possible - that's bj, dal, Armo, Joey. Bugger putting bj back or forward when we need to win the ball so badly - it's just a bloody waste.
We need MG or Kosi back in the team ASAP - big Ben is a good second string ruck man at best. Unfortunately we'll also need to trade at seasons end to improve in this area. The recruitment of Jolly was the main reason Collingwood won he flag last year. Only exceptional teams win a flag without a very good ruck man (e.g Geelong).
If we get the midfield right, the rest will fall into place - blokes like Roo and Gilbo will get their mojo back and this train will be back on track to the finals.

I was actually thinking more of Blake in 09 and King in 07. Even with Blake in the ruck they still won possession because Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Ling etc were at his feet.
If you look at premiership winning teams for the past 10 years you'll see a string of A grade ruck men - Ottens being one of them.

Cox for WC
Lade and Brogan for port
and of course who could forget Mr September Clark Keeting
There's no disputing McEvoy's tap work is awful. I think he has great potential, but geez he needs to get his act together pretty quickly when it comes to his tap work. It seems like every centre bounce, the opposition midfielders are able to get an easy clearance.
But there's no obvious solution to this (in the short term). I agree with the above messages, it is really disheartening that he is being beaten by players who have played only a couple of games.
