About the emergencies?
Fair dinkum, some of the comment I've read are ridiculous. "The most exciting since 2001" - FFS gve me a break
Apart from a small group of people, nobody has seen them play. Just because they are young doesn't mean they are any good.
Geary
Eddy
Stanley
Archer
Lynch
have all proved not to be up to AFL standard, but some people go moist because young ones are getting a go.
It smacks of desperation.
I am not saying these players cant play (and at least three of the above could still make it in the AFl), I wouldn't know, but the expectation is too way way too high.
A bit of perspective please

so archer and lynch can't play afl football, after one game each??, yeah great work joffa...... most exciting emergancies some might say is because all three of them are dangerous, classy, runners who are playing well in the vfl and have a alot of potentialjoffaboy wrote:About the emergencies?

Have you seen them play? Dangerous classy runners hey? Who would know?
I hope they absolutely blitz the AFl and are absolute sensations, but my point is that this desperate grab for somebody, anybody, usually ends in dissappointment.
For season bj was canned on here, so was Sam Fisher. The expectation just becuae they are young is just plain dumb.
I want to see ALL of our players go well, but the young players brought in, apart from Steven have been less than ordinary.
Lance or James??

There not even playing....in fact i would rather them not named so the ply two to get more game time....
Ross could name josh dicketts as an emerg....who cares...what weight does that carry...
Armo was an emerg for the last two gf's.....cant remember him getting too many kicks.......even though condition suited, but thats another argument...
Emergancies ....... Who GAF

Is that expression referring to Kubrick's adaptation or the actual year?joffaboy wrote:"The most exciting since 2001"
The the lead up to the 2001 season was electric. Blighty becomes new coach, Hamill leaves Carlton to join us, G-Train arrives on platform 9, Roo and Kosi the new acquisitions. It was all set to be bigger than Ben Hur, but ended up with about as much critical acclaim as Kevin Costner's Waterworld
Curb your enthusiasm - you’re a St.Kilda supporter!!

Never said they were going to be of AFL standard right, let alone stars. All I said was there were th most exciting three I have seen as youngsters since roo, dal and kosi.
Winmar just understands the game, has AFL level speed and uses the ball very well. Cripps looks all class and has speed. Sipposs knows where to find the ball as a medium tall and kicks goals.
So yes, I am excited. We have young (18-20 year olds) who are quick, skilful. One is a forward that has a lovely kick at goal. They tick all the boxes I want to see us develop in the next 24 months.
Along with ledger and johnson I just believe they have come through quicker then I ever expected.
So please, think before you post.

To be honest I am not sure on Winmar yet. Seen him @ Sandy a couple of times and am not sold...But its early.
I reckon they are just using the emergency slot as a reward. Dangling the carrot in front of these blokes to show them the opportunity is there. How many times in the past two years have we even used an emergency?
These kids are not the immediate fix, but they most definitely are the future. Ledger still has to string two games together in the magoos before even being considered.
Whats the deal with the emergencies this week anyway? Will they all travel? They all should be playing for Sandy this week IMO. If they are that "close" to a game......
"Now the ball is loose, it gives St. Kilda a rough chance. Black. Good handpass. Voss. Schwarze now, the defender, can run and from a long way".....

I think people believe that in order to win the flag, as recent history suggests, you need a young guy to burst onto the scene and have a genuinely good season.
It can take a good team to the next level.
Selwood, Rioli, Beams/Sidebottom etc.
So I think that's why Saints fans are excited/clutching at the hope that one of our young guys might be that player.
And until they play, we'll never know!
I still think the best and only way to blood kids is to slot one or two of them into a settled and mature team that is playing decent footy.

Uses the ball well? Under what type of pressure? Never played an AFL game. Most players use the ball well in training drills or second tier competitions, but it usually falls to pieces under AFL pressure.
Again under what type of pressure?Solar wrote: Cripps looks all class and has speed. Sipposs knows where to find the ball as a medium tall and kicks goals.
Not knocking any of these kids - I hope they all absolutely kill the AFL, absolutely turn into out and out champions, but this expectation is really OTT.
All clubs have young guys at that age with the same attributes, and most went well before picks #24, #32 and whatever Aaron Sipposs went at.Solar wrote:So yes, I am excited. We have young (18-20 year olds) who are quick, skilful.
Still dp position means not that much. Many a top ten pick has been a dud while a 40's pick (like Joey) has become a very good player.
They tick all the boxes except they haven't played one second of AFL football.Solar wrote: One is a forward that has a lovely kick at goal. They tick all the boxes I want to see us develop in the next 24 months.
Possibly true. One of the advantages of our relative succes over the past few years is that our young dps haven't been rushed into the team, can learn their trade in the reserves and may not need the 50 -70 AFL games to become regulars - however I would look more at players like Lynch, Heyne, Simkin for this - and we can see the benefits in Steven, Armo, Mcevoy, and even Smith all looking like they can compete in an AFL atmosphere.Solar wrote:Along with ledger and johnson I just believe they have come through quicker then I ever expected.

Perception v reality - need 1st year performance to win the flag? Maybe the bigger picture is more important than the youthful flair...Johnny Member wrote:I think people believe that in order to win the flag, as recent history suggests, you need a young guy to burst onto the scene and have a genuinely good season.

Neither Beams, nor Sidebottom made their debut's in 2010. Collingwood actually only played one debutant through 2010 (Blair). They did have career best seasons from a number of players though. Swan, Pendlebury and Thomas all put up career highs, none of them kids. They added Luke Ball and Darren Jolly, and they did this from an already top 4 position.
Selwood had a great rookie year. Alongside that, Bartel won a Brownlow medal with career highs (at the time) in every indicator, Joel Corey also reached a new level. Steve Johnson lifted his average possession count by 5, and Gary Ablett Jr lifted his by 10. Selwood is and was a key piece of their midfield, but to suggest his emergence sets a pattern of a "need" for a winning side is a stretch.
Rioli's probably the closest example of the 4 to actually supporting the case. Hawthorn needed a quick small forward to apply chase and force opposition sides to run into the cluster, and Rioli fell into their lap, he'd go on to fill a unique role in the premiership side which nobody else on their list could have. However, as with Geelong in '07, the list of guys putting up career numbers is long: Franklin, Roughead, Sewell, Lewis, Bateman, Young, Birchall. Hawthorn also implemented an innovative defensive strategy which the rest of the AFL was unable to counter.
What I believe looking at the last 4 premiers suggests is nothing to do with exciting youth - a subjective accolade deserved by the players without the suggested pressure of kids being the premiership key. What needs to happen is a cross the board improvement, from your best as well as your youngest.
Frankly, as I think it's unlikely this crop proves to be of the level of 2001, unless our senior players step up, I can't get any excitement going for a youth movement.

JB, I'm with you 150%.
I strongly suspect Cripps, Winmar, Ledger, Siposs, etc. are a way off AFL and I would be disturbed if any of them were to play at a critical part of the season when we remain a reasonable chance of making the finals.
Johnson making his debut is enough excitement for me. On the basis of his NAB Cup form he looks like a player. Good luck young feller.
The Cult of the young player we have never actually seen" is just as silly as the Cult of trade week ("my favourite week of the season" as one misguided onetime regular on here used to put it).
At least we don't hear so much about trade week any more: The Lovett saga put paid to that!
