Par for Will Johnson
Good to see a third debutant for the year, not that the other two have exactly set the world on fire.
So what's par for Big Willie Style on Saturday night? I assume he's going to play forward in the Kosi/Archer/Stanley role as foil to Roo. So he's got a similar par score to that of Archer in his first game, though I don't expect him to ruck and he should make a few more tackles:
8 touches, 4 marks, 5 tackles, 2 scoring shots
Much more than that and I'll be ecstatic.
Of course, the bigger question (as others have asked) is how well the forward line functions with him in it. Attitude and workrate seem to be his strengths, let's hope that stands up to a tough night in Adelaide.

If he kicks goals it will be a bonus, but he would want to put some pressure on the backs with tackles and score assists at least. His strength should be making every contest and making the back line crows pressured into mistakes. 5 tackles 2 score assists 2 goals and making the tempo go up when he is in the area and he will have had a great game. I just hope he gets to tap it along to him self and run on to the ball like in the NAB, that was awesome. Aaron Hamill would be the guy to base his game on, couple of goals and a touch of manic attack on the ball and he is going to be my new hero. Go big Willy.

Id love him to jag a goal or twp but if he doesnt thats not the be all for mine - as long as he presents and takes a defender away from Roo with him.
What I desperately want to see is a fwd come in and immediately take the intensity and fwd pressure up a notch or 4 - IF Johnson adds just a touch of Hamill....Im ecstatic. Our fwd 50 tackle effort has been embarrassing and its that typeof stuff that becomes infectious when other players see a guy individually lift his effort in that area.
Tonights game been very interesting to see how much the Eagirls have improved here - heard em say before theyve gone from 16th in the comp in fwd 50 tackles to now sit 4th.....BIG difference...Saints of 09 wouldve snaffled that sort of effort...need to get it back. IF Johnson can really add that spark in that area he has the other fwd spot sewn up for me....Archer just not mobile enough Im afraid.

Ofcourse he needs to get a kick but if its a wet Adelaide night and Johnson doesnt kick a bag of goals but his fwd pressure helps set up 2-3 has he done his job?? Has he offered more than Archers 1 kick game/ or Stanleys for that matter? or Kosi's kickless game last week????????BigMart wrote:Wtf would just applying fwd pressure going to get him a pass mark
He needs to get a kick also.....
If a forward is ever picked because they can pressure.....we are f***ed all players on the field must be able to do that...as one half of thier job.
FFS we dont have Ryan Okeefe awaiting a game in the two's - we're looking for an improvement on what weve seen from Kosi, Stanley and Archer thus far and if Johnson comes in and at the least ramps up the tackles/fwd pressure and brings others into the game IN HIS FIRST GAME ....right now I'll take it.
I saw plenty of games from Hamill where he hardly troubled the stats man....but geez he impacted the game....
IF Johnson does this in game 1 - I'll back him to get his goals in time as he learns toplay AFL alongside Riewoldts and co...attitude is friggin hard to teach....a player with a hunger for the ball/contest to the point they hunt/seek that is the pre-requisite for mine.

I think stats are a terrible way to judge a forward. With 40-50 i50s (we hope - GFs), there's never going to be that much general possession in the forward line. Forwards can't pad their stats the way others can (back 6 in particular). And while tackles are nice, a neutral ball isn't really the desired result. If a forward gets in a defenders face and forces a turnover, he won't necessarily get a stat, but he's done a good job.
Hammill was a wrecking ball for us up forward. He didn't get a lot of possession, but he got a lot of valuable possession. He got contested ball, kicked goals and set up scores for others. He got in everyone's face, tackled hard and forced turnovers. You occasionally see somebody mention his stats and how he wasn't that good. I think he was a rare type that most clubs would kill for. His injuries may have cost us a flag.
Par for Johnson? If he gets in people's faces and doesn't look too tall out there, he'll be fine. Stats be damned.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

2 goals in dry conditions .. along with 4 forward tackles
or
1 goal and 4 forward tackles if wet.
We need forward pressure... to create a few turnovers and prevent easy rebounds.
Each forward will need at least 4 tackles next to his/her name.

Very much in agreeance. What I like about Will Johnson for Sandy this year is the pressure he puts on the opposition; his second efforts after competing in the air for a mark a great. He really does strive to make an impact with or without the ball.vacuous space wrote:Once more in violent agreement.Teflon wrote:I saw plenty of games from Hamill where he hardly troubled the stats man....but geez he impacted the game....

I really do hope so - it's something that's been obviously severely lacking this season, from players both tall and small.Cairnsman wrote:sounds like he's our man then.thequarry wrote:Very much in agreeance. Need to drive it long and not let the chipping get in the way. Really need to 'PUTT' this team away. If we hit it hard we may see the cart come out.Dr Spaceman wrote:Well it is one of our bogey grounds.Bernard Shakey wrote:What's the course rating?
