Realisticly, Lynch should play next week, the rest would be better off with Sandy at the moment, although I would consider Johnson. We are desperate for forwards.
Agree, although I'm not sure Johnson is the answer for St Kilda up forward.
Lynch has to come in in place of Dempster, or maybe even Blake and I reckon Jack could be worth being the "sub", although he could also do with having another 4 quarters under his belt in the VFL, or 3 in the the AFL and then get subbed off. I really like the look of him. Skillful, tough, fast, kicks goals. Just what we need.
Really liked the look of Siposs, too, who could be good in a few years and was impressed with most of what Tommy did. Great goal from Siposs at the end, to keep us in it. Went through almost post-height from 50 (albeit with the wind).
Was pretty disappointed with the games of Smith especially and Cripps, who must have gotten about 15 possies each during the 5 minutes of the game I didn't see, going by what some have said about how they went, on here.
Winmar also did little.

So far:

Steven looks good and should play next week in the seniors.
Johnson looks good as HF
Lynch has been good down back, and like last year seems more suited to that end.
Walsh has been steady.
Smith has been good.
Heyne. What he does is good, Just needs to do it more.
Sippos. have been impressed. Looks classy and knows how to slot a goal.
Mini. Butchers the ball. Please please do not elevate him next week.
Winmar. Looks good, but is raw and not ready.

Stanley has been ok, but sloppy.
Agree with pretty much all that.

Lynch played both ends with Sandi last year. The games I saw he looked better down back.

Of the games I did not see..match reports by others had him going ok down back.

i just don't see how lynch is possibly going to be a more productive half-back throughout 2011 than either of those two. not that they're world-beaters, but he won't be either for another year or two, from what i hear. so if we're still going for a premiership this year then that would be a silly change.

on the other hand, if we're giving it away for 2011 now that lenny's out, by all means, bring him in.

Thought the following put their hands up: Lynch, Steven, Smith, Johnson, Stanley (just got to hold those marks but roving was sometimes outstanding), Siposs, Heyne.
Love the look of Siposs. Very nice.
Cripps - needs refinement.
Mini and Eddy looked like Mini and Eddy

I never said he should be in the side for the rest of 2011, did I, but I could definitely see him having the same sort of impact as Dempster, although Dempster would most likely be better at shutting someone down, obviously.
Dempster gets very few possies, though and I would be surprised if Lynch didn't get at least as many and probably more marks. I reckon he could play down back in the AFL with relative ease. And I don't agree that he's still a year or two away. That's what was said two years ago. He looks ready now, especially for playing down back, which is much easier than playing forward.
He seems to read the play really well, has genuine "footy smarts" and mostly kicks it well.
If there wasn't a good match up for Dempster this week, I'd rather see Lynch get another taste and possibly the same with Blake, who we seemed to have little use for last night.
If they see no suitable role for either of them, I'd much rather they give Lynch a run.
Everyone seems to want changes, but when it comes down to it some will have to make way, or we'll just stagnate and the likes of Collingwood will leave us in their wake.

His butchering of the ball included a lot of inside 50s, and a lot of those inside 50s ended up in shots at goal. Yes, there was the brutal turnover in the back end. Yes, there were a few scrubby looking field kicks in the middle. For the most part, though, I think he played a lot better than advertised here. That is probably reflected in the fact Lovett left him in the centre for almost the entire game.

He may never play for the big club again, but you don't win psychic points for predicting which players won't make it. Most players don't make it. At worst, I think he'll be a valuable centre square player for Sandy, helping out the younger ones. He was very talkative today and clearly didn't mope about being dropped. I suspect that if one of our younger players had played that game, you wouldn't be nearly as negative.

And for all the Eddy/Mini hate, our forward line doesn't look a hell of a lot better without them.

You misunderstand my comments then. I don't give two hoots about his success as a Sandi player. No doubt he can be a force in the VFL

I write with the AFL seniors in mind and can't understand why you would directly compare him with a younger player.

Mini has had his crack...indeed several cracks. 2009 he was excellent...but since 2009 has been below par.

Mini is slow...struggles to find position in the seniors...and so if he butchers the ball I see no place for him in the seniors. as it is in the seniors we have too many at present with poor disposal.

Steven used the ball much better...and IMO has more upside.

I would plat Steven in a heartbeat over Mini in the seniors for IMO he has a lot more upside.

I would also play Smith over Mini, for his pace will in the seniors give him the chance of him getting into better positions. he is untried of course...but I would give him a crack.

we have a fwd Line? we have a team of 12 half back flankers and a fwd line of roo and milne up against 8-10 opposition.

I remember the Cats game well..

Mini rarely got into space ....and then later in the game he at last did...

He was passed the ball...was on the run...options foward there...and he blasted the ball out on the full, all under little pressure.

The 2009 Mini would have nailed it. The 2011 Mini has lost his mojo...

Now he is no lone ranger. But it is time see if other can deliver before he gets another crack.

Its not a question of how our fwd line looks with/without Mqualter. Its about unearthing and introducing new talent to a side that looks in total need of rejuvination. We know by now what Mini is, what he can provide and what he can't. Its not enough. We HAVE to find somethings that adds to this side or admit 2011 is a write off - especially with no Hayes.

We know what he can provide playing out of the forward line. I'm willing to believe he might be a better player elsewhere. Just about everyone else we've tried up there has been. Gilbert, Gwilt, Voss, Guerra. I'm sure there are others. Our forward line has been a graveyard for years. I think it takes an exceptional talent to function alongside Roo, Kosi and Milne. I don't think Mini's an exceptional talent.

I agree with SRR that there are others in front of Mini. I think Steven is a gun and I hope that he comes into the team and plays a similar role to Schneider. I'd also agree on Smith and there may be others. I disagree with his assessment of Mini's performance today. I think that the butchering Mini did was greatly exaggerated. I think he did a really good job of spotting up forward targets. I thought it was a good first-up game in a role he hasn't properly played in years. If he can progress in that role, he might have a future.

Post game. I stick with the above.

For Essendon I would NOT pick Mini..he turned it over too often and is NOT part of our future.

Consider: Steven (should be a certainty), Lynch, smith, Heyne, Johnson.

Stanley not fantastic, but was ok and I would still prefer to Archer. But Johnno looks worth a crack. Suspect Kosi will be brought in along with Schneider.
Simpkin - effective without getting much of it, likely type
Walsh - competed well against an AFL bodied player, will play seniors this year for mine. Very Blake like.
Lynch - was very good, best game I have seen him play. Reads the play well, natural footballer, disposal/decision making can be a bit too cute on occasion but has sure hands, put him in next week.
Geary - injured early no effect
Eddy - terrible disposal, not good enough unfortunately, decent bloke
Cripps - battled hard, not ready, probably injury hampered
Winmar - also battled hard, great kick when given time, probably not ready for bash and crash AFL yet, struggled early, got better
Steven - also very good, can turn it over, but butters up well, also should play next week IMO, at the very least, knows where the goals are, agree with P66, he will make it.
Cahill - injured first min of the game
Johnson - played well, like him, probably needs to find half a yard to make sure he has the time at AFL level, could be a smokey
Heyne - want to like him, great skills, also a good goalkicker, as others have noted, just doesn't get it enough. Typical HFF, would need to take a selection risk of he ever made regular seniors, will never show enough at Sandy to demand a game.
Stanley - not good enough, yet, maybe never. Isn't strong enough in a contested situation, very kepler Bradley like, just hope for more....
Mini - OK at best, provided some drive, just doesn't do enough
Smith - battled, didn't see too much of it, does look like a footballer though

I understand the different roel theory but in reality Mqualter has played midfield on occasion for us without setting the worldon fire - he just doesnt get enough of the ball nor posess disposal that hurst opposition.

Armo and Steven at the least appear to have the nous to win the ball AND when they go fwd loof far more dangerous to me than Mqualter.

IMO skill, pace and goal scoring capability are all areas for mine Mqualter would have to markedly improve in if he was to stay in the side. I dont think he can.

Tom Lynch MUST come in.
Looked good.
What a great atmosphere down at the TB Oval.

And wasn't it a pleasant change to be following a team that actually won a close game !!!!
