Mildenhall was a decent footballer, playing 74 senior games with his beloved St Kilda from 1974 to 1982 in the era of Greg Burns and Geoff ''Joffa'' Cunningham. As a boy, he had burst through the gates at the Junction Oval each week to place the family blanket on their favourite seats. He is still secretary of St Kilda's past players' group, and watched the 2010 AFL grand finals with a passion. ''I fear it's passed them by,'' he said

Bill was my favourite player back in his playing days. I wore the number 39 on my jumper (which is in the cupboard somewhere) and he always was very nice when I took the numerous photos and got the many autographs from him. (He used to ask if there was any film in the camera.) I had the pleasure of bumping into him in 2008 on the way to the MCG for a final against Geelong. He remembered me and we had a lovely chat about his kids (as I had my daughter with me). I used to go to the basketball in the 90's and Bill was a great umpire. I occasionally have watched the basketball on the tv just to see if he is the umpire. Thanks for this thread as I wouldn't have known he had retired. I'll keep my eye out for him at Saint's games and hope to see him there.
He and Judson played similar roles.
Both very reliable.

I meant similar styles rather than just their position.
Obviously roles change over time but they were clean-up men of the 70s in the same way that Kenny Sheldon used to mop-up for us in the late 80s.
