Tommy had a good night. 8/10. Hit targets. Spoilt. Good body positions. Knew when to leave his man and create a target. Got some handballs away in heavy traffic.

In the last play mcqualter punched tommy in the head. Thats why he was down. Also added to Mcqualter running into armo's head when armo was over the ball. Probably both reportable if they were opposition players.

I thought his performance was good but not exceptional..

Went to ground a few times unnecessarily...

Still a while off, and I think for him to have a greater impact, he will be dveloped into a forward.

Learnig the game quite nicely in defence.. And as I discovered last year.. His kicking skills and confidence at this stage of the journey is magnificent!

The Walsh game last night was invaluable to both the player and the club.

Tommy is an elite footballer and the chance to line up for the Saints, at Etihad in front of a good crowd will do wonders for his confidence and motivation. To get through the game and do so well will spur him on even more. It must be difficult when your are a long way from home and playing a strange game, on windswept ovals in front of a relatively small group of spectators.

It wouldn't surprise at all if TW kept his spot next week. Although a few of the bigger names may return, they are likely to take spots away from the young forwards and mids. With Tommy destined to spend more time with the Zebs, at least until a chance to elevate him arises, a further chance to fast track his development will appeal to Lyon.

Friday night was further confirmation that the club has a real prospect in Walsh. And it was confirmation for him that he is on track and that he belongs.

It's all good :)

I would have liked to have seen him in the forward line. Still, it was good to finally see him out there getting a go.

Big call, what makes you think that?

Massive leap up from VFL to AFL, and he's not a superstar yet at VFL levels.

He may play a few games dependant on injuries IMO, but not until mid-season at earliest to give him some extra development/adjustment time.

Would like to see him stay in the seniors for the entire pre season. Dawson is suspended,so perfect opportunity to expose him to decent opposition for the next month. Will help his progress no end.

Some players are able to adapt to a sudden rise in standard in every sporting code, perfect opportunity to see if Walsh can too. Last night was a good start

Considering that Dawson is suspended for a while because of his juvenile antics Walsh has a great opportunity to step up and steal his Full Back spot.

I was watching Walsh for the first half as he was playing right in front of me and I must say he knew what he was doing and played well.

Did good 1v1, has a strong body for the contest, and a couple of Walsh possessions managed to set up good rebounds and forward thrusts.

I expect to see a fair bit of Walsh this year.

Walsh is not on the senior list.

While things may transpire to change that status later on, it does not really give TW a chance to steal anyone's spot at the moment.

Zac is fit, is training, will play a praccy match for the Zebs and will complete his suspension prior to Round 1. I think he'll be our Full Back from fairly early on.

Tommy was hit by friendly fire in that final marking contest.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Only in the event of a long term injury to a senior list player or in rare cases retirement

I think he has more short term upside than most of the other players not currently in our best 22.

The more games he can get at the highest level the quicker he will adapt.

We all acknowledge that we have to change a minimum of 2 - 3 players to the 22 that represented us in the GF's. Barring injury it looks like Gamble is putting his hand up to be one of those players and I'd like to see them take a punt on Tommy in the early part of the season as well.

Roo seemed to be a big wrap for him, when interviewed by Channel 7 during/before the telecast. Said he's spent plenty of time going one on one with Tommy during the pre-season and that he was really impressed with how strong and fast he was in those contests.
Tommy looks to have all the tools to succeed, as you would expect, given his pedigree. Love his attitude and approach to the contest.
As I said last year, he reminds me an awful lot of Barry Hall. Same sort of size and shape, and very strong and fast. And having played probably his whole life up forward in Gaelic Football, will hopefully perform that role well in our game, when he gets more used to it.

I think it would be interesting to compare Tommy to Karmichael Hunt. Who is better at this stage or who will be better? I didn't see Hunt play.

Hunt apparently did well and looked extremely good in the brief time I saw him (was surrounded, but ran through them like they weren't there, Harvey-esque), but did apparently cramp in the first game, which is hardly a good sign.
Given his extra height, I'd rather have Tommy, all things being equal. I see no reason why he couldn't hold down full forward.

Apart from playing 160 metres away from that position.
