I remember seeing a video years ago, I think it was our 2004 best and fairest night, Doc made a great speech...you'll tear up watching it.

If anyone can find it that would be great, I think it might have been a bigpond video on the saints site or something like that.

Without doubt the greatest individual we have attached to our F.C. Brilliant, game future defining player who was years ahead of his time. Skill, courage, extraordinarily tough, both sided, loved by most, respected by all - just a gem of a footballer.

But, he was so much more. I met him twice. The first was a Thursday night after training in the mid 80's. The '66 side was there for a reunion. A few hours upstairs watching the then side train was followed by a trip downstairs in the old S.C. Bistro. Doc was holding court, and they all came to bear witness to him holding court. Former team mates, opponents, the unaligned - they all worked schedules to fit with The Doc being in town.

This night, when we were downstairs, a few of my associates spent time winding me up to go and talk to The Doc (childhood idol, etc, etc). By mid evening I had beer induced bravado sufficient to meet their demands. I waltzed over, tapped him on the shoulder, told him how much joy he had bought to so many, and expected to just wander away having done so.

He would have none of it. Effusive, humble thanks, turned away from the circle of stars, offered me a beer, started asking all about MY life, and when SAM NEWMAN asked how many he had to buy for the shout, Doc added one - me. When Newman protested "he's not in our shout", Doc replied "he is now". Newman tossed it in and did as Doc told him. I GOT A BEER OFF SAM NEWMAN, the tightest assed ex-grammar boy in the caper. Why? 'Cos Doc told him to. Newman was only there because of Doc. The respect he was held in was inspiring. And all because, more than anything else, he was such a decent man.

For me that was iterated one night, in the same bar, in his first year as coach. I had the young brother in tow for a rare Moorabbin game. We were coming down the stairs and he spotted the desert headed ol' bloke near the bar. "Is that Baldock?", "Yep, would you like to meet him?", longish story shortish, I took him over. We spent around 3 hours with Doc and Margaret at the bar talking about everything football, and then everything else. He was just a gem of a man. Ridiculously humble, a great conversationalist and in a marriage that 99% of the population could only dream about. The ease they had with each other (momentarily) restored my faith in the institution.

I'd like to laud Margaret's contribution to their marriage and to Doc's success. I haven't met a more deserving woman since. She was an absolute treasure and my heart goes out her as she has lost her great love. As a couple they were just simply a delight to engage with. Great, great, decent people.

It is our privilege as a football club to have this man as our greatest ever.

I know the club is considering sending the whole playing list over to Tassie for the funeral. I'd do it in a heartbeat. It is rare to for people to have a chance to pay tribute to an absolute ikon. They should all be given the chance to experience the respect Doc deserves and will receive.

I won't suggest the modern breed should "do it for Doc", because it's redundant. To know of him, to appreciate just what he stood for, how good he was, should be sufficient.

He was the best of us. Having him as our most favoured says much more than any troubled 17 y.o. or Kiwi misanthrope could ever conjour.

You see, Doc saw the best in people. If he was to be defined by nothing else, that would be enough.

Rest up Doc and be well Margaret.

when you get to this again I would suggest forwarding to Georgie day - St Kilda Heritage museum
in the latest newsletter from the musuem she mentions creating a special book and area to be set aside at moorabbin.
