It is certainly a disaster of epic proportions.

But how much is also self inflicted?
Most of the homes and businesses that have been flooded have been built or bought since the 74 flood.

If you buy a place that is below previous flood peaks then you are simply asking for trouble.
Nature will always repeat itself and previous flood lines will always be repeated.

So there seems to be some very sloppy planning that has caused this.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

The St Kilda Football Club is asking all its members and supporters to assist the hundreds of thousands of people currently affected by the devastating floods in Queensland by donating to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal. >>>>>>>>>>>>>

I agree EM. Some blame must fall onto city planners, politians etc.

Still feel for the residents and businesses who might not have been aware where they were building.
Have friends and family in Ipswich who thankfully are all okay.

Great to see people from all parts of Australia and the world donating money, time and assistance.

Yes lets blame the politicians and city planners. If you want to have a go at the city planners, you might have some trouble as you would have to go back to those back in the 1800's.

If you were to know Brisbane, then you would know the areas flooding have been settled for over a century. 2.5 metres of water in the XXXX brewery at Milton, est 1877, Milton State School 1893, etc.

All of the older areas on the South side of the river have been settled for just as long. The only new premisis built since 74 were replacing existing structure.

Goes to show drivel written on this site not only confined to what happens on the football field.

I think you need to do your homework before you make remarks like that. Planning had gone into place to ensure 1974 floods would never happen again. Thats why they built the Wivenhoe Dam. No one can predict a disaster and if it wasn't for Wivenhoe these floods would have been a whole lot worse.

As a real estate agent- albeit not in an area adversely affected, I can let you know a little bit. Most homes that have gone under in bris are older - ie pre war- built before 1946. Unless the millionaires on the river. Strangley smart real estate is close to city or water ( when and if snow melts then anyones beach property will go under too) however buy near CBD or near river. The bris council has had rules for years that you have to build 30cm above the 74 floods or they don't give approval even though the dam should have stopped the flood but we've had too much rain! If an owner wants to raise tbeir home then they have to make sure they have a 30cm slab to be aboe flood level before they think about building. So yes, the owners that buy close to river is their own fault and not council. However some poorer areas ie country towns this is all they can afford.
Some footage shown was a fuybsaving a 30 dollar couch. Not a lot to some, but heaps to others!
